Dinner Key, circa 1961
Love this photo -- it's on page 191 of "Historic Photos of Greater Miami," a new book by Seth Bramson. I think they sell it in The Bookstore in the Grove. If you click on the image, it will open larger. It's a photo of Dinner Key in 1961. You can see City Hall and the land where Scotty's Landing is now and I find it so cool to see that the Coconut Grove Bank was there, too. See it to the upper left? And to the left below that is the Dinner Key Auditorium, current site of the movie studio.
There are older Dinner Key photos in the book, along with all the other old Miami photos.
Meet author Sue Kenney
Author Sue Kenney will be signing her new book, "My Camino," at The Bookstore inthe Grove (3399 Virginia Street), tomorrow, April 1 from 7 to
8:30 pm.
Sue left the familiar world of her family, rowing and career to walk 780 kilometers across the north of Spain on a Medieval pilgrimage route known as the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Suddenly downsized from her corporate career, she decided to embark on this journey to find her passion in life. Sue completed this incredible quest in 29 days. She walked alone in the winter. This is her story.
Helping Shake-A-Leg
Several local businesses have already stepped up to donate: Doubletree Hotel, Milam’s Market, Senor Frogs, Fresh Market, and Monty’s who have donated beer, wine, and food for the event.
But they still need more. Please help Shake-A-Leg by way of donations of food or refreshments so they continue their community enrichment programs on the water with kids. If you would like to donate, please contact the Coconut Grove Chamber at 305-444-7270 or email info@coconutgrove.com.

Alicia Manning celebrates during Earth Hour
It's not Saturday night in the Grove if you don't hear the Krishnas. Alicia Manning, with flowers, was out for her birthday, that's Church Barnard behind Alicia.
Also celebrating Alicia's birthday was Trina Collins, David Collins, behind Trina; and Patrick Manning with Alicia.Photos by AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt
Vintage art and clothing are going fast
The Coconut Grove Woman's Club's Vintage Arts and Clothing Sale is in full swing this weekend. The place was very crowded yesterday and the sale continues today.
Veronica had lots of nice vintage baubles at her table.
There was one small area for men's vintage clothing. Dolly MacIntyre told me there isn't much of a market for men's vintage items, but she would love to start spreading the news that lots of men's items like ties and jackets are available.Dolly also told me she was misquoted in the Herald, about the "carrying in of disabled people" if the handicap ramp was not ready.
I believe her, that didn't make sense.
There's one booth up front that seemed to be the most popular, you can see all the ladies gathering around for some good deals.

"Earth Hour" is tonight
Tonight at 8 pm, join the community by switching off the lights during Earth Hour and help make a statement for the good of the earth. Most Grove businesses will be participating.AnnaMaria, had a little dress rehearsal today at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue). Above, Community College art students, Samantha McNabb and Sofia Moreno view a Freda Tschumy bronze.
A few visitors thought it was part of the art. She also dimmed lights in the gallery so they reflected how the paintings would look at home. It came off well. Some people expressed that the dimmer lights drew them in closer to the art work for better viewing. So tonight again the lights will be out in the same places for "Earth Hour" and maybe now on a continuing basis since people like the atmosphere so much. This is one way in which "Earth Hour" made a lasting difference -- AnnaMaria is using less electricity now. Maybe the trend will continue -- more restaurants might use more candlelight in the future rather than burn every light in the place.
Oscar and Ashley Thompson came prepared with flashlights for Earth Hour later at night.
Ice Cucumber soda

We were going on a couple of weeks ago about Dave Collins' famous Cucumber Punch at the Art Stroll.
Well, turns out Pepsi has introduced "Ice Cucumber" soda in Japan this past week.
Hopefully it will arrive in the US soon, if it's anything like Dave's punch, it would be delicious on a warm summer's day.
PJs in the park at Kennedy Park today
As you drive by Kennedy Park, you can see the tents going up and here is Victor Leong, getting his sand castle ready for today's "PJs in the Park" which is from 4 to 8 pm.Wear your PJs and come on out -- some of the activities include the milk moustache competition, diaper the daddies (don't ask), three legged relay, magic show, free rickshaw rides, arts and craft and toddler friendly games. Oh yea, and Victor here, will teach you how to build sand castles, too.
All this afternoon at Kennedy Park.

Grove Chamber seeks interns
Young professionals who are interested in the position would aid in the operations of tourist information, continuing the services to Chamber members, helping in day-to-day operations of the office as well as being a part of the planning of events such as the Great Taste of the Grove, Members’ Luncheons, and Coconut Grove Networkers.
Interns must be Word and Excel proficient, have a flexible schedule accommodating hours between 10 am-6 pm, as well as a positive personality and determined work ethic. Anyone who wishes to apply should contact the Administrative Coordinator, Richard Issa, at 305-444-7270 or email at info@coconutgrove.com.

Bookstore's new MySpace page
Making the rounds
I made my rounds this morning and as someone had stated in an earlier comment, Kinko's is moving in next to Qdoba. I was told this long ago, but for some reason, people like to keep things quiet, so I didn't say anything until the sign went up. They asked me not to.
I stopped at Focaccia for breakfast. Loved this colorful scene out front.
By the way, this storefront next to the new Kinko's is being used to store wardrobe for the movies being shot over at the Expo Center. Each day you can see the staff entering and exiting with costumes and things for movie shoots around the area, like Marley and Me.I popped by the Woman's Club to see if they would have the handicap ramp ready for this weekend's Vintage Art and Clothing Sale, which starts tonight. They said they should have it ready at the side of the building. There have been work crews doing their thing all week, I have seen them.
One of the ladies at the club told me the same old story -- the city, zoning and permitting people are holding things up. I swear these people want bribes, she agreed, they hold up most business openings for no apparent reason. She said that you call the city, they tell you one thing, you call zoning, they tell you another, then an inspector tells you to do something else. It really describes Miami in a nutshell. Three steps forward, one step back.
Take a walk, no seriously
If you are so inclined, you may get more info and sign up here: http://walkers.meetup.com/366/
There is also a "Miami Filmmakers & Actors Who Make Documentary Films Meetup" group. They usually meet at the Sailing Club. Info on them here: http://docfilm.meetup.com/91/

She received the first Metrorail sculpture commission, for the University of Miami station, and her sculpture of Marjory Stoneman Douglas is on view at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. She taught bronze casting and ran the foundry at the University of Miami for 13 years and cast all of the pieces in this exhibition. 39 of her pieces are on exhibition.

Rezoning to accommodate large grocery stores
Also, rumor has it that Publix is interested in building on Grand Avenue, in the Village West area and zoning needs to be changed to accommodate a large store.
Another suggestion is Trader Joe's. Many people are hoping they will open a store in the Grove. I think the old Borders books location may be perfect for that. Most are in urban areas, the Grove is perfect. They actually have a form on their website, where you can suggest a location, maybe if a lot of us suggest it, we can get one.
Here is the store suggestion form.
Let's hope zoning is limited to these grocery stores and not large box retailers and huge condos. We need grocery stores, we don't need the other monstrosities.
They have been pretty busy at Berries
They have been busy at Berries (2884 SW 27 Avenue). Happy hour is still everyday from 4-7pm with 50% off the entire bar. They have a new Chef, Frank Ferreiro, who is tightening up the menu, changing a few things. The new menu should start in about a week.
Grove Designer Rebecca Kyrouac is still hard at work -- the men's and woman's restrooms just had a complete renovation. And they have a newly decorated wall with old black and white photos of the owners, the staff, their families and some locals.
The parking lot is being paved right now. And they are putting up a retractable awning for the patio in the next few months, hopefully before the rainy season. They are even working on a new website.
Wow, next time I'll be careful to ask them "what's new?" Apparently EVERYTHING is new at Berries. :)

Special delivery
Here is Francoise, whose parents own Focaccia Rustica, making a special delivery of curry chicken soup. She's on spring break this week. When she pops into a gallery, she likes to make some art before she heads back to the restaurant.

Weekend Charrette set for Playhouse
The Charrette for the Coconut Grove Playhouse is this coming weekend. The Playhouse theater's board of directors and the University of Miami's Center for Urban and Community Design will be meeting all weekend and the public is invited.Three days of workshops are designed to come up with a solution for the failing institution. I say first step is to remove the board and not even let them participate. They are the ones that caused this failure in the first place, aren't they?
The workshops will be Friday, March 28 through Sunday, March 30 at Ransom Everglades (3575 Main Highway) just down the block.
The schedule looks like this:
Friday
9: 30 am - Welcome and introduction
10:00 am - Presentation
11:00 am - Open Forum (Q&A)
1:00 pm - Design Team Work Session
10:00 pm - End of Day
Saturday
8:30 am - Design Team Work Session
12:30 - Public Meeting Pin Up
3:00 pm - Design Team Work Session
10:00 pm - End of Day
Sunday
8:30 am - Design Team Work Session
5:00 pm - Final Presentation
The general public is invited to visit the Design Team Work Sessions.
College Night at CocoWalk
Another good spot to see the tennis players is at Le Bouchon du Grove (3430 Main Highway), many hang out there after the games. They have for years, thanks to Jorge Farge, my neighbor, who started by drawing in the French players, now most of the top players show up at least once during tournament times.

Don Feldstein's response to Woman's Club fix
"I have been misquoted and the description of events leading up to the legal issues is not factual. I never said I don't want money, I said I get no money from this. ADA cases do not provide for financial remuneration to the plaintiff (unless perhaps I was injured as a result of negligence). They are strictly for the purpose of preventing discrimination on the basis of disability.
"The Woman's Club was made aware of this problem some 2 years prior to the legal action that I took when I saw that they were doing nothing to remedy the problem and I was being excluded from Culture in the City events as a result.
"Also, please inform Dolly MacIntyre that having assistants helping people into the building is not acceptable, not to mention potentially dangerous. It may be possible to rent some type of external lift as a possible temporary alternative. Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to compound their problems. In fact, I have personally contributed money to their cause. It's just too bad that they waited until the last minute to move on this and are now looking to make a quick fix."
Editor's Note: I have to agree, Dolly was quoted in the Herald as saying that if they don't have proper access by Friday's event, they would carry disabled persons into the building. The whole scene seems quite disturbing to me -- very undignified and a liability.
Vintage art and clothing sale at Woman's Club
The Woman's Club of Coconut Grove (2985 S. Bayshore Drive) is having it's popular Vintage Art and Clothing Sale this weekend. Starting Friday, the club will raise money to complete their renovations. The actual building has been closed for close to a year to be retrofitted to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. Seems a guy named Donald Feldstein threw a stink when he could not enter using his wheelcheer and all hell broke loose, he threatened to sue.
But it seems to be a good thing because the building was run down, it smelled musky inside and the bathrooms needed to be redone. And it really should allow access to everyone, for legal reasons or not. They should be ready by Friday, if not, they are going to use portable bathrooms set up outside.
The weekend schedule is:
Friday, 7 pm - opening night party
Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 6 pm
The party on Friday is $25.00 at the door, which includes food, drinks and a fashion show. The weekend art show and sale is free.
There's more than just art at Café Tu Tu Tango
Yvonne teaches flamenco dancing and works at Café Tu Tu Tango at CocoWalk on Wednesday nights. Café Tu Tu Tango supports the artists with space to paint and perform. They get "funny money" and that translates into food. Daily from noon to 4 pm you'll see artists working on easels and from 6 to 10 pm and Wednesdays you'll see extra performers like Yvonne here. You may remember the post I did on artist Jeffrey Passage. working at the restaurant.Monday, March 24, 2008
Another incredible Grove event
The concert at The Barnacle was a huge success last Friday. The weather was beautiful and there were over 1,020 people in the park (including visitors, children, orchestra members and volunteers).
Artists on the streets? Why not?

I was talking with an artist/gallery owner the other day about the Art Stroll and we both agreed that the Grove needs to go back to some of its roots.
We would like to see working artists on the streets. Now she thinks they should sell their wares. I think they should paint only. No selling and they should only be local artists.
So as not to turn the place into a flea market or carnival, maybe three artists a day will work -- all through permit basis and they will rotate daily or weekly -- there would be a different set of artists each day. The artists will paint on canvas, and I think, add a little charm to the streets. The artists would hand out business cards and direct interested buyers to galleries or their homes for sales, but they would not be selling right there on the street. They would be only working and that would be the objective -- an artist at work, just part of the scenery.
This would only be for artists painting on canvas, no jewelery makers, no t-shirt designers, ceramics, etc. This would serve to add an artistic air to the area and give a working artist some outdoor scenery to paint before the public. They could move around and not be confined to one area, they could paint whatever strikes them.
I think this would add a lot of charm to the area and let the Grove stand out a bit. They do this in New Orleans and it really is quite charming to see an artist at work, oblivious to the people around, just enjoying being in their element.

Bob Simms Collection at UM
Robert H. Simms is a longtime teacher and activist who helped foster dynamic change for blacks in some of South Florida’s most historic neighborhoods. The Richter Library at UM has an archival photo collection that chronicles his life and legacy this week. Simms recently donated hundreds of his pictures to the University of Miami Libraries, which has made them a part of its Special Collections division. The Bob Simms Collection includes scores of images taken by Simms of his activities in the black communities of Coconut Grove and Miami. It also features documents, letters, awards, and publications of his personal and civic accomplishments.
An emeritus member of the UM Board of Trustees, Simms was a teacher at the George Washington Carver schools in Coconut Grove and served for 15 years as executive director of the Metro Dade Community Relations Board. He developed the Miami Inner-City Minority Experience for the U.S. Department of Defense and led efforts to create and implement the Inner City Marine Project now known as the Mast Academy.
A special exhibit featuring samples from the Bob Simms Collection is currently on display at the Richter through the end of the month, and a website features samples from the collection. To see it, click here.
Meetings this week
Thursday, March 27, 9 am - City Commission hearing at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive). Televised Ch 77 - or stream at http://videos.miamigov.com
Thursday, March 27, 7 pm - Friends of Peacock Park's Spring Meeting. The Sasaki group will reveal its master plan for the Grove waterfront. The meeting is at Plymouth Church's Pilgrim House (3400 Devon Road, right off Main Highway). For info: 305-448-3775.
I get it now
The solution may be to take the word "Information" off the booths and come up with another word and then the guards can actually be guards and if people do have questions, they can try to help, but not be expected to help since they are guards and not info people.
That's why the poor guy was saying, "I don't live around here, how do you expect me to know where things are?" He was totally right. Imagine you are a security guard, you get an assignment and are put in an info booth. He was probably expecting to be guarding something and providing security, and he now has to inform people of where the closest bathroom is. Very frustrating for him. I see that now.
Maybe he should have punched me in the nose. I won't harass them anymore. I may start harassing City Hall and the people responsible for the whole stupid program.
Shake-A-Leg on "Oprah's Big Give" tonight

Words of Peace just in time for Easter
Yesterday's rain did not dampen the spirit of all involved in the Words of Peace project. Here are Donato 2-1/2, with his mother, Cassandra, owners of the Bird Bath laundromat.
Children and adults both participated in the artistic event.
Pia age 7, was brought by her Dad, spending time in the Grove while he competes for Olympic status sailing.
Robert age 5, enjoyed the project, his father worked close by in Kiosk. And Alex visiting, from London enjoyed it, too. That's volunteer artist Bettyann Pober with the boys.

He called me a "F-ing Idiot

"F-ing idiot." He actually yelled it on the street at the top of his voice as I was walking away. Nice.
He may have had a gun and he was in uniform so I backed down and we just had a yelling match and he called me the name.
What happened was I saw a couple of guys goofing with the two guards in the booth, you can see one here in the blue shirt, the other was on the other side. Because I am a buttinski, and I like to play "stump the info booth person," I walked over.
The guys outside the booth were cracking up. They could not get over that the info booth guys didn't have a clue. They said to me, "Every time I ask these dudes something, they don't know the answer." A Kent supervisor and an employee were manning the booth at the post office location. One more clueless than the other. He said, "I have lived in the Grove eight years, I know every square inch, these guys don't know anything."
So of course, I had to chime in. I asked some questions and of course they grabbed for their ubiquitous map, like a security blanket. They said they were only on the job two days, how were they to know everything. I said, "But you don't know anything!" He replied, "Well I don't live around here -- how do you expect me to know anything?"
Good question. Are we seriously paying people to sit in these booths (two of them now) with their thumbs up their noses? I would like a refund on my City taxes please. I won't pay for this.
Now here comes the funny part. I just got a call from Sylvia. She said, "Tom were you just arguing with one of the new info booth people?" I said, "Yes, how do you know?" She said, "I was just at the booth at CocoWalk and some guy says he got into a yelling match with someone who took his picture and was going on about waste of taxpayer dollars." I just had to laugh. She knows me so well. :)

Tall mocha with 2% milk, please
We are lucky to have so many great coffee places in the Grove. I had stopped drinking coffee for awhile, not sure why, but now I seem to have to have it daily. My favorite spots are Foccoccia, Pommes & Pané Café and The Bookstore. I'll pop into Starbucks every now and again, but I don't think Starbucks even grinds the coffee there anymore, so it doesn't seem as fresh and the place doesn't even have a coffee smell anymore.
If I had my druthers, I'd be sitting outside one of these little cafés all day blogging and drinking coffee.

The South Florida Calligraphy Guild will be on hand this Saturday afternoon at the Streets of Mayfair's "Family Days," to assist youngsters in creating visual statements about "peace".
These personal works of art will then join the exhibition in the window adjacent to the Bookstore.
Artwork is done on 20" x 5" strips of paper The choice of paper, ink and colors are up to the artists.
The schedule for Saturday is:
2 to 3 pm - kids 5 and under with parent
3 - 4 pm - kids 6 to 9 years of age
4 - 5 pm - 10 to teens
Adults may start at noon learn and then assist if they choose.

They truly enhance life in Coconut Grove
They both add culture and class to the area. They are both stately and just enhance the whole area. Felice, Sandy and AnnaMaria are three women who have added to the Grove in a great way. They had a vision, they didn't waste time and they got their businesses open.
While others never seem to open (inspections and zoning they claim), these two businesses opened in record time and these two large spaces were made into something that really says "Coconut Grove."
Already the gallery has had a couple of exhibits, had a charity event for the Woman's Club building restoration and has drawn tourists from all over. The Bookstore has had book signings, music events and has turned into the new Grove hangout. They truly add to the quality of life in Coconut Grove.
What do you think has been a great addition to the Grove in the last six months?

Red Hat Society ladies pay a visit
Around 1 pm, 70 Red Hat Society ladies descended on Coconut Grove. They hailed from Del Ray, Boca and Boynton Beach. The fun loving young seniors hired a bus to bring them down to eat and to visit Vizcaya. They lunched at Cheesecake Factory, who were flummoxed with such a large crowd. They didn't like the service. Oh well, hoped they liked Vizcaya.
Sharing our problems with the world
First the FPL massacre, now the meter problems.
I wish they would pick up some happy news for a change.

Turn out the lights -- make a difference
On March 29 at 8 pm, join the Grove Chamber and the City of Miami by switching off the lights during Earth Hour and help make a statement for the good of the earth!Switch off the lights for just one hour-- relax and see your world in a whole new light!
In Sydney, Australia in 2007, 2.2 million people at 2100 businesses turned off their lights for one hour and "Earth Hour" was born.
If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.
Everyone can get involved, residents and businesses alike - this is wonderful opportunity for the Grove to get creative with lighting for just one hour-- if you have a restaurant, go candlelight. If you have a store, sell candles, or run a special promotion for that hour!
If you are a resident, come out for a candlelight stroll and support the businesses that are participating. Join hundreds of thousands of businesses, and millions more individuals worldwide in this positive movement.
Visit www.earthhour.org and get involved. If you are a business, download a corporate communications kit.
There are guidelines for hotels, restaurants...all kinds of businesses and individuals can join in.

Carrollton students on a medical mission

One of the physicians involved, Dr. Donato Arguelles, had his daughter Carolina Arguelles and a friend Josie Aguila, both from the Carrollton Class of 2007, participate in the mission last year. They returned from the experience transformed and wanted to ensure that future Carrollton students had the opportunity to participate in the mission.
While on the mission, the juniors will serve as interpreters for the medical students, they will teach basic hygiene to the children treated in the clinic and in the village, and will play with the children while their parents receive more in-depth education on hygiene and medical care. The Carrollton students attending are, Lauren Correa, Michelle Loret-de- Mola, Gabriela Lorido, Caroline Naya, Gabriella Pohudka, Natalia Useche and Jennifer Villa.
For more information on the program, please visit www.medicalstudentsinaction.com.
Couple of Grove zoning issues coming up
The other is a second reading on allowing Mayfair to rent offices on street level, as well as the usual stores which are preferred but just not there. Sony Music is already moving to Mayfair. They are leaving their Lincoln Road building for the Grove. This will bring more foot traffic and life to the Grove. Anything is better than the empty storefronts. The current Grove stores and restaurants are sure to welcome all the new people in the area.
Also, the new tenants will be required to have the lights on until midnight, which would light up all the dark areas and add more life to the Grove. That old Borders Books area, on the corner of Mary and Grand, needs it bad.
Confused and mentally abused at the info booth

When I am walking by the info booths on a rare day that someone is inside, I like to eavesdrop when a tourist approaches.
I told the girls about the free wifi available at The Bookstore (3399 Virginia Street) right down the block, but they wanted a place with a computer they could rent, so I sent them to the Oasis Cafe (2977 McFarlane Road), down the block in the other direction.
Rumor has it that Kent Security Guards are going to man the booths a few days a week now.

The Loggerhead is serving up corned beef today
Terri was at the Loggerhead (Flanningan's - 2721 Bird Avenue) today serving up delicious corned beef and cabbage along with ice cold green beer. The lunch crowd was much bigger than usual.
Tonight the fun continues, there's still plenty to eat. Stop by after work for a pint or two and some delicous corned beef.

Art Stroll was well received as usual
So it seems that everyone was out at the Stroll today. The lovers, the haters, the politicians . . . everyone. Even the lady who leaves comments here under a man's name and threatens to boycott was there. She was charming as usual behind her two faces.I ran into friends I hadn't seen for awhile, one is a wealthy art patron who suggested that more artists accept credit cards. She was in the market to buy, but she doesn't carry around much cash.
Later in the afternoon, a guy asked me for money near the post office, he said he wanted to get something to eat. I gave him a few dollars and sent him to the stroll, telling him that for that donation, he could eat and drink to his heart's content. That was sort of a double donation -- one to him and then one to the Art Stroll chartities (the St. Stephen's AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban's Day Care Center) through him.
I think the favorite thing there was Dave Collins' Cucumber Punch. It was so hot out that the cool cucumbers just hit the spot.
I'll post a slide show of the event tomorrow. Anna-Maria Windisch Hunt was kind enough to take photos for me and I was able to relax and enjoy the day for a change, without having to run all over the place taking pictures and explaining to people what they were for. It was nice to eat, drink and visit with neighbors.
Heard around town . . .
Mr. Wolfe also checked out other areas in the Grove like The Bookstore. He asked if they carried any of his books, they didn't.
Can you say "awkward?" I bet they ordered some real fast after that.
* * * * * *
Someone broke a window in one of the new info booths already -- the one at the post office. Guess they needed info badly -- there are a few brochures inside, either that or they wanted the folding chair that was sitting inside.
Gifford Lane Stroll is today

It's along one quaint, tree-lined block of Gifford Lane between Oak and Day Avenues on the 3200 block. If you click the map above, it will
open larger.
People who knew the Grove year's ago swear this is the closest thing you're ever going to see that looks and feels just exactly like the old Grove. I enjoy it because all of the Grove "characters" are in one place at one time -- it's pretty unique. I found Bernard, shown here, setting up earlier today. When I say "characters" I mean like in a tv show or play, where every one of the cast is on stage or on screen all in one scene. That's what this is like. The people written about in this blog, the people who comment in this blog, the people who "run" the Grove will all be there on one Village block.
This is an amazing place to buy cool art and tuck it under your arm, but an even more remarkable place to chill, sip intoxicating cucumber punch, eat grilled shrimp on big skewers, have long leisurely political or philosophical conversations with perfect strangers, then dance in the street, and then dance some more.
More than sixty artists will display their art along the block. The Art Stroll has a reputation for great bargains from among some of the finest artists in the region. Neighbors on the block provide free and minimal cost libations and incredible barbecued food. It is Florida "old-style."
Once again, all of the participating artists at the Art Stroll will be giving a percentage of their sales to two Grove charities-this percentage will be added to contributions made by the public and neighbors living on the block. The two benefiting charities from the Grove are the St. Stephen's AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban's Day Care Center in the Village West, which has seen hard times lately.

"Where in the Grove" winner
The winner of yesterday's "Where in the Grove?" contest is Patrick from the Center Grove. The painting is at Pommes & Pané Café on Virginia Street, at CocoWalk. Patrick won a copy of "Barguments" by Doug Hanks. Thank you for all who participated. You can pop in and see the painting any time at Pommes & Pané.
Gifford Lane Art Stroll is tomorrow

For those who want to boycott the event -- good -- more food and art
for me.
This is probably one of the best signature events Coconut Grove has -- it truly is a link to the past and for anyone that wants to miss it -- you are only hurting yourself.
Suspicious magazine sales people
Magazine sales people have now moved to the Center Grove after residents of both the North and South Grove called police over the past two weeks because of the sales peoples' apparently aggressive behaviors to enter residents' yards and homes.Center Grove residents called police yesterday and the police responded quickly. Neighborhood Resource Officer Braga has recently been in touch with the owners of the magazine company to report these behaviors to resolve these persistent neighborhood problems.
If you see these magazine sales people, please call the non-emergency police number (305-579-6111) and let them know you are calling on behalf of the All-Grove Crime Watch and request a marked unit to come to the area to check out these people who appear to be "casing" homes.

Where is this painting? It is in a public area in the Grove, maybe inside a store, maybe out on the street. We will choose one entry from the correct entries and the winner will receive a copy of Barguments. The popular new book by local author Doug Hanks. The book sold out recently at Doug's book signing at The Bookstore in the Grove.
We have a winner.

Anokha is moving to Virginia Street
Anokha, my favorite Indian restaurant, is moving from Commodore Plaza to the newly renovated building at 3324 Virginia Street this spring. Good deal. Brings them out of that dark little area into the light.I was at a wedding recently and I overheard this one dude talking to another dude and he was saying that he has traveled the world and he thinks Anokha is the best Indian food he has ever had. Interesting. Of course I had to butt in and told him I had just eaten there.

Where am I?
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but this topic is just so funny. The other day a few of us were out for lunch and I spied three separate tourists with maps, trying to find their way around the Grove as the Information Booths stood empty.
I asked this one dude, Khaled, what he was looking for. He pointed to large words, "Coconut Grove" printed in the center of his map. He wanted to know where Coconut Grove was. I told him he was standing right in the center of it. Then he asked where the waterfront was. I showed him.
One of my friends who was with me joked that if the Information Booth was occupied, the attendant would probably have had to run to get her map to tell him where Coconut Grove was.
This morning Sylvia was stopped in front of the booth by a guy named Victor, he was upset that the booth was empty and he needed info. He wanted to know where the Mayfair Hotel was, she pointed him in the right direction and he was on his way, another frustrated tourist.

Meet your new neighbor
This is the new Safeguard Self Storage off of SW 27 Ave. and US 1. The builder should be shot for building this ugly structure, which is way out of proportion for the neighborhood. In person it looks much worse. That little quaint area, which I blogged about once, is now ugly. And I would not trust my valuables with Safeguard Self Storage ever -- they can't even keep their sign graffiti free.Photos by Harry Emilio Gottlieb

Altruistic horsecrap
That's what, um, maybe one guest a year?
The blurb neglected to mention that the Sonesta raises their garage parking rates every time someone turns their back. They are supposed to charge $1.25 per hour, but have been known to charge flat fees of $10.00 when no one is looking.
If the Sonesta wants to do good, how about they buy some art at Anna-Maria's gallery benefit to help the Woman's Club -- you know, that little historic building they cast a huge shadow over, next to the gravesite they wanted to dig up for their parking garage entrance.
Have a Heart Buy Art show benefit extended
Howard and son Domenic Taft enjoy a playful moment in the Windisch-Hunt Fine Arts Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue). Domenic brought his dad into the gallery to show him a piece he liked.AnnaMaria has extended the "Have a Heart Buy Art" benefit until 5 pm, Wednesday, March 12. The slide show can be seen here.
"Real Estate Broker Night" at Greenstreet Café

Perfect day for Dogs on the Catwalk
Yesterday's perfect weather seemed to bring out every dog and dog lover in the Grove, to the Dogs on the Catwalk event. Tents were set up in Kennedy Park back near the dog park area and a mini stage was set up for folks to show off their pet's best tricks.Vendors had booths set up too, and it was a nice day for dogs to meet and greet each other. Along with the pet items and services there was food -- hot dogs, arepas, the usual park fare.

Is FPL massacring trees on Main Highway?
I am trying to get some thoughts from other Coconut Grove residents regarding the FPL "Storm Secure" tree trimming which is taking place along Main Highway (and other areas of the Grove.) I have lived in Coconut Grove for 26 years and feel the trimming is completely out of control.
If you drive along Main Highway the incredible trees that once covered the road now how gaping holes. I must say, not only have the aesthetics of this historic street been changed for the worse, but more importantly the trees now look completely unstable! Should a hurricane come, the chance that they fall and do damage to power lines (or worse to people) is greater.
I wrote and called FPL about this but of course received no response. Have other Grove residents voiced concerns about this?
The parking meters are crazy
This has happened to me about three times already -- I go to pay the meter and I have to wait for it to reset itself or something. But this "wait a moment please" ends up being like "wait 15 minutes please".Too long.
So now I don't wait, I look for another meter. The other day about three sets of people were frustrated by this. They stood and waited, look around to make sure they weren't being Punked or on Candid Camera or something, scratched their heads and left. All this within about 15 minutes, the time it was taking one meter to reset itself.
Yesterday as I was about to put money in the meter a dollar came sliding out. So this was nice. I got free parking yesterday.
Eight times out of 10, the meter won't take your credit card. A lady, I think a tourist, was asking me for help yesterday because the meter would not accept her credit card -- for a dollar, she tried for a good five minutes, I watched her. I told her that it wasn't her card, it was the meter, they are temperamental. I gave her a dollar and she was happy. She used it to pay for parking and ran into one of the stores to shop. We almost lost another paying tourist in the Grove due to this
silly nonsense.
Now that I think about it, I didn't get free parking yesterday -- I gave the dollar to the lady, sort of a "pay it forward" for parking, not coffee.

Belly dancing on Main Highway
I hear a lot of the late night bar patrons like to pop in for a hookah smoke after a few drinks around the Grove. This quiet little place turns into another thing at night. Interesting.
Grovey-wood
Lots of filming going on in the Grove these days, reminds me of when I was a kid and I would see Miami Vice all over the place. I remember watching them film a baseball scene for Absence of Malice in Peacock Park years ago, and some nuns on skates one time, I forget what movie that was for. This big trailer you see on Grand Avenue today, is being used as a wardrobe changing room for the new Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson movie, "Marley and Me", filming around the Grove. It's right across from the Bookstore. If I see Jennifer or Owen around, I'll blog them here.
I went by the Grove's "movie studio" (the Expo Center). They just completed filming parts of Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick's new movie "Chilled in Miami and are getting ready for the return of Burn Notice. You can see sets being built here today. Below are all the trailers used for dressing rooms, lighting and such. When I have time, I'll go back to the Burn Notice set and take some more photos. Apparently they know the Grapevine and they let me in when I showed them my credentials.
Hurry, bring your cameras!

Dress your pooch in his/her favorite outfit and enjoy the catwalk fashion show, exercise games, look-a-like contests, doggie art and a talent show. It's free and starts at 11 am.

The secret of the Amazon -- in a bottle
Lisa Viguera, my mail carrier, is now in the health food biz. Actually she is selling this great stuff called Mona-Vie. It's a juice consisting of the best antioxidants. I try to drink açaí (pronounced a-say-ee) berry juice every day and also pomegranate. This stuff has that along with grapes, pear, blueberry, wolf berry, passion fruit and so much more -- 19 fruits in all, you can see the list here. You probably all know Lisa, she has been part of the Grove for years.
The stuff retails for $45.00 per bottle and you only drink a small shot daily. I have been buying bottles of açaí juice at The Fresh Market for $2.50 per bottle and if I drink one bottle a day (it's actually cheaper at The Fresh Market than Pubix), that is $75.00 right there, and that's just the açaí juice. It doesn't include every other juice in the Mona-Vie. So I think this is a great deal.I know I got my cholesterol and blood pressure down by having açaí and pomegranate daily, along with other things. So this may be the solution to all my bottle juggling -- one small shot a day. :)
Anyway, Lisa is offering Grapevine readers a great discount if you call her at 786-487-3958. Just mention the Coconut Grove Grapevine. Hey, why not, Grapevine, grapes, açaí -- it all sort of fits in. You can get more info here: www.lviguera.com or email Lisa at lviguera@aol.com , but call Lisa today for the discount.

Sarnoff Staff Concerns
Like many Miami citizens, I consider even the taint of misbehavior by public servants unacceptable. And like the overwhelming majority of District 2 voters who voted for Commissioner Marc Sarnoff I was upset by the insinuations your paper raised in recent articles. (Here is one).
So I went to see for myself. I got the same records your reporters used, and spoke with many of the same people they did. I took the time to read and ask, and develop additional sources.I conclude that your editors could not have been more wrong. The charges of unethical conduct insinuated in your several recent articles regarding Miami Commissioner Sarnoff's staff are at best sloppy and irresponsible journalism. At worst your actions could be construed as a deliberate attempt to smear those involved. The only question left for me is your motivation to so grossly misrepresent the situation.
You seem to-but never directly-accuse Ms. Yvonne McDonald of benefiting from a federal community development (employer support) grant that was applied for after she stopped working for the group that might later receive funds. Credit goes to the City of Miami's Community Development department and Ms. McDonald for bending over backwards to be squeaking clean and thorough in their interpretation of the requirements for such funding.
After Ms. McDonald, a long-time and highly reputable advocate for the residents of the West Grove, left the UEC, the UEC's new director applied for the federal grant in question, the only such grant application from that part of the City. The City Community Development department recommended the grant and asked for concurrence from the Commissioner's office, which was granted. Your representation otherwise appears egregiously wrong.
Perhaps the history of abuse within the City has bred in you a knee-jerk reaction in the case of Mr. Ryan Alexander. Mr. Alexander's possibly naive error seems to have been to use his own money and initiative to do what his neighbors and City departments wanted done. He did not take money from the City, he GAVE money to the City. At his personal financial risk he made long-sought improvements to a park too small to gain the attention of anyone but the criminals who used it as a means to escape and the police that chased them.
For inquiring as to whether a portion (not all) of his verified expenses could be reimbursed (answer "no"), you attempt to pillory him. For this initiative Mr. Alexander has been temporarily suspended from his job. Thanks Herald.
Miami 21 is a controversial and complex undertaking in which all Miami citizens, business and property owners have a stake. Its effects on individual properties is clearly uncertain, and you so state "there is no evidence of wrongdoing". Nevertheless your report continues unimpeded, using quotes from unengaged academics or those with possible axes to grind against Mr. Peter Ehrlich to again insinuate sinister intent.
Shame on your editors. The Herald with its deservedly proud heritage of Pulitzer awards for investigative reporting is headed in the wrong direction. This is not a case of the fox guarding the hen house; it's a case of the guard dog stirring up trouble.
-- Mel Meinhardt, Coconut Grove
That the Bookstore in the Grove is trying to get Pamela Anderson for some kind of bookstore event.
That Mayfair is looking into knocking down the back part, and putting up an office/medical building. I asked one of the marketing guys from Mayfair and they said they knew nothing about it.
That Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. have been at the Grove Expo Center filming "Chilled in Miami." As you know the Expo center is used for interiors for "Burn Notice," the tv series, which is due to take over for their filming in April.
That Chili's is having structural problems at CocoWalk -- the floor is caving in -- the problem goes all across to Tu Tu Tango. I asked one of the guys I know at Cheesecake Factory, under Chili's and he tells me no problems at all -- biz as usual. But I did ask one of the artists at Tu Tu Tango and they said they did have floor and structural problems recently. Just saying this is maybe the hold up at Chili's which has been red flagged.

New trees are improving Grand Avenue
New trees are being planted along Grand Avenue this week. As I was taking this picture, a Grove resident stopped me to tell me he doesn't like the trees. He says since this is Coconut Grove, they should be coconut palms and he also says that all the trees that are planted under power lines eventually die and need to be replaced. Not sure if that is true or not, but I think any new trees are a great enhancement. My friend who was with me joked that this one tree here was put up to block Condom USA from the elementary school's view across the street. Maybe it was. :)
The Grove's Sue McConnell to be honored
The City will pay homage to the women who have been at the forefront of the struggle for equality and those who have created educational and professional opportunities for future generations. Honoree Adrienne Arsht will receive the Julia Tuttle award, the highest award given to an individual for making a difference in our community. Other honorees will be recognized as well.
Sue seems to do everything for the Grove. She tries to help with every event, does a lot of the leg work and never really gets the recognition she deserves. Her info and Grove postings help me a lot with this blog, and I really enjoy her witty personality. She was just recently elected President of the Village of Center Grove as well. Congratulations, Sue!

Surprise party for Fred Hunt this Friday
This Friday, March 7 at 7:30 pm, our regional treasure, Fred Hunt (shown here in front of his Panama Embassy piece), will be honored with a surprise birthday party. All those who have known him since he came to the Grove are welcome. Artist friends, collectors, neighbors -- all are welcome to celebrate his long life. Many know he has been battling cancer. He has decided not to continue traditional treatment. The party is at The Windisch-Hunt Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue). The door will be open but will say "closed", please just enter and proceed to the back of the gallery.
I am told that Fred won't see this post before the party, so please don't mention it to him if you see him around.
The Black Info Booth Test

When I approached the booth, she was leaving, not sure why, it was 4 pm, prime time for the Grove on a Sunday. Anyway, I stopped her and asked if she could give me some information.
I asked her where the Coconut Grove Playhouse was. She looked bewildered and she went back into the booth and grabbed a map. You know, one of those brochure-map things that every tourist gets in their hotel or car rental agency. This is what these info people are using.
So she attempts to look it up and I said, "You know what, forget that, where is Greenstreets?"
Greenstreets? The girl didn't have a clue where it was or what it was. She grabbed for her brochure again. Just then two good Samaritans came over and gave me directions for the Playhouse and Greenstreets. I told the Samaritans what I was doing, and they knew The Grapevine and got a kick out of my experiment.
I apologized to the girl in the booth and told her what I was doing, too. I told her not to worry, it isn't her fault. Apparently anyone can work there, they throw you a map/brochure and you have at it. That's your job. No training needed.
Total waste of tax payer dollars. My next test is to get a tourist with the same map/brochure and see how fast they can find a location compared with the info booth person. I will bet anything that the
tourist wins.
Between the terrible customer service at some stores and the lame info booth, I can just imagine what tourists think of Coconut Grove. I don't think it is a good impression. Maybe some of us who actually know our way around can volunteer to do some shifts in the booths.
Local author is signing books this Friday
Local author, Doug Hanks (who writes for the Miami Herald), will be signing his new book, "Barguments" at The Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Virginia Street), on Friday, March 7 from 4 to 7 pm.The Simon and Schuster book consists of a series of silly questions designed to prompt barroom arguments (we need more of those in the Grove) like: Would you rather give up salt or e-mail? Name the best TV theme song of all time. If you had to move to another country and never leave, where would you go? Would you rather give up wine or chocolate?
Free fancy coffees available and receive special Coconut Grove Sailing Club discounts during the signing -- l0% off all books plus an extra 5% off for "Barguments."
The party then moves to the Sailing Club (2990 S. Bayshore Drive) for drink specials, free bar food and customized Sailing Club barguments.

Miami Goodwill, no . . . not that one
Three of us were talking about these new black "info booths". I finally saw someone in there. When I saw her, she had on a terracotta colored shirt. My friend saw a guy in there with a blue shirt and she says that the blue shirt said "Miami Goodwill". When one of the guys entered her store with the shirt on she didn't know if he was collecting for Goodwill, the charity, or if he had the shirt donated to him from Goodwill. He then told her he worked in the booth.I laughed at that. I have been driving around with a bag full of clothing in my car looking for one of those donation trucks. There used to be one by EZ Kwik on 27th Avenue, but it's gone now. If I saw the guy in the blue shirt, I might have given him the whole bag, thinking he was from Goodwill, too.
So anyway, I did my little test -- you know, trying to see if the info person knew any info. Come back tomorrow for the results. It's a riot.
The signs add a lot of class
Trini Hair Salon and Women's Fitness on the corner of Commodore Plaza and Grand Avenue, had their new signs painted this past weekend. Looks good. Not sure why they stopped at the Anokha Indian Restaurant next door, but hopefully they will paint that sign, too. The lettering really completes the building.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, at Elizabeth Virrick Park, 3255 Plaza Street, at 2:00 pm.
Artful way to raise money for the Women's Club
Here are just a few of the many works of art that will be on sale March 8, 9 and 10 at the Windisch-Hunt Gallery (2911 Grand Avenue), all to raise money for the renovation of the Coconut Grove Woman's Club. More images will be added throughout the week, please check back often to see some more fine works of art. Who knows, by the end of next weekend, you may own one of these. I know I have my eye on one or two of them. (The slide show is nicer with the music, please click the icon at the left, bottom of the slide show to hear the music).
Lots of cruise ship passengers visiting
I noticed one huge bus screeching around the corner from McDonald Street onto Grand Avenue while I was waiting for take-out at Somoto. Usually they come up Mary Street and park in front of Mayfair, guess they took the other way around this time.
