Rezoning to accommodate large grocery stores
Also, rumor has it that Publix is interested in building on Grand Avenue, in the Village West area and zoning needs to be changed to accommodate a large store.
Another suggestion is Trader Joe's. Many people are hoping they will open a store in the Grove. I think the old Borders books location may be perfect for that. Most are in urban areas, the Grove is perfect. They actually have a form on their website, where you can suggest a location, maybe if a lot of us suggest it, we can get one.
Here is the store suggestion form.
Let's hope zoning is limited to these grocery stores and not large box retailers and huge condos. We need grocery stores, we don't need the other monstrosities.

Cool, all these are good news, all of them are welocome, as long as they try to make attractive additions to fit in and add to the Grove, not a warehouse looking outfit like CVS. They should never forget to contribute to the local community.
OMG TRADER JOES WOULD BE AWESOME. god i miss them, and their great prices too.
you guys what is the trader joes, i have seen the site but i just cant figure out what they are about, r they anything like lets say fresh market or similar
who can clarify this
anon,
They have all kinds of organic, vegetarian, etc, but they are a whole lot cheaper. Honestly when i was in college, it was the only way I could buy organic or other natural foods without breaking the bank. They also have a large selection of stuff brought in from all over the world (like these little frozen green tea ice cream/cake things from japan). Good stuff at a good price. I do not think they would really compete with fresh market or whole foods per se because they carry primarily packaged/frozen selection and they do not have a deli for example. But you can get hormone free chicken, and wild salmon etc from their frozen selection at a really good price. They also carry fresh organic produce.
It would be a fantastic addition to the grove and would have no problem gaining business and like I said, since they are a little different they wouldn't be direct competitors with milam's or fresh market. They kind of are in their own little niche.
trader joe's is an excellent idea. i filled out a suggestion.
btw i'm new to the blog (and love it!). i actually live in south miami but love spending time in the grove and hope to be a resident within the year!
Hey grapevine. BTW, I have a scoop. There is a fed ex/kincos opening in the space directly adjacent to Quidoba.
Yes, I blogged about Kinkos long ago. They actually were unloading the trucks into the space yesterday.
Great news. I'm a Grove resident and the pressing need for useful, thoughtful redevelopment of the West Grove goes without saying. A grocery store is exactly the kind of anchor tenant that would encourage other useful businesses like dry cleaners, banks, retail and restaurants to move to Grand Avenue. The entire community wins. And something like Trader Joe's goes perfectly with the Grove's tradition of artsy, edgy quirkiness. For those of you who don't know Trader Joe's, it's a beloved grocery chain that features really good, sometimes unusual stuff at very reasonable prices. It's a perfect fit for Miami in general and especially for the Grove.
I vote to allow the rezoning for a grocery store - both Milam's and the new project on Grand.
It would be a coup to get Trader Joe's... but after looking at their 'store locations' map on their website I would say it's doubtful. Their closest stores are in Atlanta and I'm not sure how their distribution/supply would work all the way down here. Publix would be a very nice consolation prize.
please don't judge by a casual BTW. a nice "welcome to the blog!" would suffice.
A Trader Joes would be a fantastic addition to the Grove. They have a great selection of international foods and organic foods at reasonable prices. Hopefully the city would see this as a great opportunity for the numerous empty store fronts
