It's their money, they can do what they want

Looks like Mercy Hospital is taking some of that money they sold themselves out for to have their hospital signs waxed. They were crying about needing all that money to update the medical equipment, but today a mobile car washing/waxing company had a few trucks out with workers literally waxing the signs all around the facility. Guess their salaried maintenance crew was out on vacation or something and the signs had to get done.

I took the picture with my cell phone, sorry about the poor quality.

We want culture, please

I had to laugh at the comment left below on the Back to the Future post about the Playhouse. The rude commenter (lobbyist?) says that more condos and stores and a mixed-use development is what is needed in the Grove.

I see it differently -- it seems that every time The Barnacle has a music event, the whole town shows up. Last December, "It's A Wonderful Life" was probably the most spectacular event we had in the Grove, that's if you don't count the outdoor showings of Much Ado About Nothing, which drew standing room only crowds -- even in the rain.

Even Blue Man Grove draws massive crowds on a street corner! And don't get me started on the Arts Festivals and Taste of the Grove and all the other cultural things we do. They all bring out massive crowds from the whole county.

I think the person who left the comment needs to get to know his/her neighbors and the tourists. As far as I can tell, culture is what people want. Not more condos.

Changes at Starbucks

Doug Olson of Coast to Coast with Gino Vasques at the Grove Starbucks.

There's a new kind of thing going on at Starbucks, if you were in this morning things were different. If you had your coffee there (not take-out) you had a choice of the regular cup or this great new ceramic mug.

The big shots from Starbucks are in town from Seattle this week, they are staying and meeting at the Mayfair Hotel.

Below is District Manager Sachita Subramania. He actually brought coffee across the street to AnnaMaria the other day because the coffee machine was broken when she stopped in. Rather than make her wait, he told her he would bring it over and here he is -- service with a smile. Sachita will be here throughout Starbucks' move across to CocoWalk.

Back to the future

A tourist asked a couple of us the other day for a "Where" magazine, he was looking for theater listings to see some sort of play or performance in the area. Shame we didn't have the Grove Playhouse to send him to.

One of my neighbors is an old Grovite. He was telling me one night that he played with the Monroe kids at The Barnacle when it was just "their house." He says the playhouse was a movie theater back then and they also had a soda fountain in the lobby, which I remember being told before.

Love the idea of the Playhouse being turned not only into a theater again, but maybe a place to show old movies -- a revival house, and an old ice cream shop or soda fountain in the lobby would be great too.

Big turnout for Chamber networker at Pisco's

I had an interesting talk with the neighbors

While I was at Mrs. Brown's house, I got to speak with a few of the neighbors from Florida Avenue. I asked them about the proposed Grand Avenue project, not too far from them.

You would think that being blocks away, they would be for it, but it seems the would rather have more of the Rebuilding Together crew fix up the neighborhood, than have a strange developer come in and knock down their history.

They do like the idea of a Publix or Trader Joe's being built, they feel Milam's is ripping them off and they would appreciate the lower prices that the other two stores could offer. Also, they like the idea of new jobs coming into the area. They don't like the thought of major construction projects, especially blocks and blocks of it. A few resent all the high rises they see in the distance now.

They don't trust anything developers say and they don't understand the point of displacing so many people. This is their home, why uproot them to line the pockets of strangers with no ties to the neighborhood? The people being displaced want to stay in the neighborhood, not end up someplace like Florida City, where the nearest "affordable housing" seems to be. The people being displaced are being displaced for the benefit of whom? The builders and the remaining neighbors?

They feel that the people being displaced are "taking a bullet" for the rest of the neighborhood and especially the developers. Imagine if you were told that you have to move out, vacate and move far away. No more Grove for you, go enjoy another part of the county as your home. Think about it.

One neighbor told me that he could look up and see sky when he was younger, now he sees the green roofs of the Ritz Carlton and other high rises in the distance. He said that he has lived in the Grove his whole life and would prefer that his Village West neighborhood be left alone, other than the refurbishing jobs that Building Together is doing.

I found my talk with them quite interesting. Maybe the people voting on the project, like the zoning and planning board and city commissioners (not the developers), should walk around the neighborhood one day and chat up the neighbors and see what they really think.

Many of the neighborhood people don't come to the city meetings, they are afraid of speaking up, but I do think they need to be heard.

New exhibit at Dharma Studio

Dharma Studio (3170 Commodore Plaza) is presenting an exhibition for the effervescent Latin American artist, Katiuska Gonzalez (shown below, right). The show will feature recent works by the young emerging talent and will be curated and attended by her long time mentor and friend Baruj Salinas (below left).

Baruj, the prominent and internationally awarded Cuban American Master painter, illustrator, printmaker and architect as well as the co-founder of the artists group GALA or La Vieja Guardia (the old guard) has inspired and influenced Katiuska unconditionally for years.

In Baruj’s words “Katiuska has an affinity with art, she is not afraid to tackle large canvases. She has become an artist that knows her métier and has evolved with natural talent. She chooses her subject matter to suit her tastes and uses a reduced palette that gives her work a professional finish. Her present exhibition at Dharma Studio deals primarily with her series of “Pueblitos”, all of them infused with a special light that comes from her deep spirituality.”

The show will open with a reception on Friday, May 2, starting at 6 pm and the exhibit will continue through May 17, 2008 . This is a rare opportunity to participate in an evening with mentor and protégée.

The Little Art Show had a big turn out

The "Little Art and Antique Car Show" at Plymouth Church, held yesterday, had quite a turnout. The hour-long event could easily have run all day.

Here are Glenn and Francesca Terry with their creations. The art was shown in a large meeting room, right off the courtyard.

There were some quite amazing pieces. There were also refreshments of all sorts from coffee and punch to cookies and cupcakes and more. One table with deserts made with flan was a hit.

Ricky Schechtman, right, rings up the first cupcake purchase to Maggie James from the North Grove.

The old cars really fit in with the historic background.

This would be an excellent place for a large art show. I know there isn't much parking and the grounds are very special and don't need people trampling them, but the atmosphere is perfect for an art fundraiser, or even a pumpkin patch in the fall.

Everything, including the kitchen sink

I stopped by one of the Rebuilding Together projects going on this weekend in the Grove. This project was at Mrs. Brown's house on Florida Avenue. That's Mrs. Brown above, center with the crew from Gillette Construction Company from Palm Beach Gardens.

Apparently it works like this: a volunteer construction company is given a house, in this case, Mrs. Brown's house, and they work with volunteers from the community to fix up the house.

Here is Michael from Black Tie Pressure Cleaning. He is preparing new screens that will go over the new windows.

I half expected to see Ty Pennington or Paige Davis jump out from behind a truck, it was just like the shows you see on tv. A large crew pitched in and did things that needed doing.

Tom here is working on one of the bathrooms. Another bathroom was having safety rails installed in the bathtub.

Herminio is fixing the hot water heater.

Here, the old window is being taken out so brand new windows can be installed.

The volunteer crew even replaced the kitchen sink. They installed smoke detectors, too, and really did a great job for Mrs. Brown.

Many of the neighbors wanted to know where they could sign up to be next. It was an impressive thing to see.

"We're throwing a party mañana [Sunday, April 27] that only lasts an hour. If you come, you'd better come on time. It's The Grove's Little Art and Antique Car Show held at Plymouth Church. The public is invited. Bring money but not much. It'll be fun so GO.

"It's where the Plymouth people bring out the art they have created during the year for a little show. The work is so-so but it's kinda cool and prices are cheap. A potion of proceeds go to a youth group charity. Francesca and I will be selling stuff that me and my son, Ian, made. Of couse I'm not surprised

Of course the planned project next to the Kampong was approved yesterday. Was anyone surprised?

There is not a project in this City of County that is not approved. Sickening.

The only good news about this is that the large lot size of the project and the small quantity of homes being built, means less traffic and less development.

The black classic-style flip flops feature a recurring Casa Valentina logo on the sole and a pink strap with the signature Casa Valentina heart in a house emblem. Each pair comes in a black drawstring bag featuring the Casa Valentina logo. The flip flops come in three sizes (s, m and l) and cost $30 per pair. A $5 shipping & handling fee will be added to each order. They can be purchased online at
www.casavalentina.org or by calling 305-403-5380. All profits benefit Casa Valentina.

“The Walk A Mile In Her Shoes campaign is a valuable opportunity to educate the community about the crisis young people face when they age out of foster care and about what we do at Casa Valentina, and the flip flips are a fun way for us to communicate the message,” said Chelsea Wilkerson, Executive Director of Casa Valentina.

These would make great Mother's Day, graduation or birthday gifts.

Casa Valentina was formed in 2004 by a group of concerned Grove residents who acknowledged the immense challenges faced by young women who age out of foster care without the life experience, financial stability and support they need to survive on their own.

Development project in the South Grove

The City Commission is set to vote on a proposed $80 million development, just south of the Kampong.

Of course many neighbors are against this large project. Some are for it. 11 homes are planned on lots as large as 29,000 square feet. Lots that size should not really be a threat to the area I would think.

One problem is a road planned to go right through the Kampong. Is this possible?

One thing the board needs to do is give the developer a special permit. I am against all these waivers and special permits given to developers. Keep the zoning as it is. Isn't it there for a reason? The one good thing is that the development is very high density and that's better than another developer coming in and putting double or triple the amount of houses in.

The Grand Avenue retail complex

Some people have asked me what I think of the Point Group's land use change request to build the massive retail complex on Grand Avenue, in the west Grove -- Village West. The city's advisory board voted to defer the vote.

I hadn't blogged about it because I didn't really have an opinion yet. I guess the real question is, what do the residents think? The neighborhood behind Grand Avenue, which would be affected, is the original Grove. That's where it all started. Will this project uproot the community? Will it bring customers to the area? Will people actually venture down that far from the Central Grove area?

It would be great to have a continuation of Grand Avenue. I usually stop at the car wash or the Farmer's Market on weekends and don't really venture down that way. Will I continue walking down Grand Avenue if the large retail complex is built? Will you?

If a supermarket, like Publix, is part of the mix. I will. Maybe even Trader Joe's, although that might fit perfectly in the old Borders Books location.

I think the current residents should have the final say -- not the developer, not the city's advisory group -- the actual people who will be uprooted should have a say. It's their neighborhood that is changing. Do we honestly need another retail complex? CocoWalk and Mayfair, especially, have so many boarded up storefronts. Is this a project to line the developer's pockets or to help the Grove community?

Maybe I did have an opinion after all. But of course, I always do. :)

If possible, don't drive today, walk those five blocks to the Center Grove for your lunch or coffee or whatever. If you see paper on the streets, pick it up. Recycle something that you normally would not recycle. Use one extra napkin today.

Plant a tree or some flowers. Turn your a/c off, if not all day, part of the day. Change one or more of your light bulbs to the energy efficient type which you can find in Shell Lumber or Walgreens or CVS.

And maybe some of the restaurants and galleries can turn the lights off and use candles like they did during

Changing the art at Café Tu Tu Tango

Yesterday was "art change day" at Café Tu Tu Tango (at CocoWalk). Every six weeks, the "old" art comes down and the new goes up. I loved seeing all the Tu Tu Tango "characters" in one place. I usually see one or two at a time painting at the center easel's but yesterday they were all out early in the morning, taking down the art that was there and replacing it with new art.

Above you see Barbara Tejada and Uta, just Uta, like Madonna or Cher and below is my friend Theresa, who was preparing her new art to put on display.

Here's Uta again, up on the ladder, getting the art up before the lunchtime crowds arrive. As the locals know, Café Tu Tu Tango is the perfect spot to enjoy shared appetizers, drinks and see local artists at work, and of course you can purchase the art right there on the spot.

Baynanza in Kennedy Park today

Today is Baynanza -- bay clean up day in the county. Lots of us were out early this morning in Kennedy Park, right here in the Grove. It's still going on. You can't miss the sign-up table right in the center of the park. Just show up, sign up, grab a bag and hit the shoreline.

Mike and Kathryn were out early, getting right down into the rocks along the shore.

Many more people have been showing up throughout the day.

Is it me or is the Somoto girl rude?

This is really bugging me. I wonder if the owners of Somoto restaurant on Commodore Plaza know how sarcastic and rude the order girl is on the phone. I cringe every time she answers.

She treats the caller like an idiot, always tries to get out of taking the order for some reason or other and she is just plain losing the place money. I had a large order I was about to place for a group of us here and I just ended hanging up because she treats me like crap every time I call. She just doesn't want to take phone orders it seems.

We ended up sending someone to Moon Thai, across from UM. It's quite a large order too, it's a shame Somoto isn't getting it. Another Grove business that lacks customer service skills. And I like them so much, but I don't think I'll go back. It's a shame -- the rest of the staff and the delivery guy are always so nice and friendly. But this one person is ruining the business for them.

Try calling now: 305-448-6172. Try to place an order and comment here letting me know how she was. Maybe it is just me. Maybe she's not that bad.

Clyde Butcher's book signing a success

The turn out was great last night for photographer Clyde Butcher's book signing. Nancy L. Everit and April Carlson, two fans, were thrilled to meet Clyde.

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival & Historical Association presents Clyde Butcher's "Nature's Places of Spiritual Sanctuary" at the Arts Festival office at Mayfair (suite 128) through May 14.

Monty Trainer, president of the Arts Festival, made a special request of Chef Christina Yamada of Savoy Fare -- prepare black and white hors d'oeuvres to complement Cylde Butcher's black and white photography.

Herald gives Cefalo's bad review

Cefalo's Italian Village (3540 Main Highway) gets a bad review in today's Herald. I hate to agree with them, but each time I have eaten there, I have left unhappy. Never had a fresh meal yet and I keep trying. The mussels are fishy, the chicken parmigiana is dry and tasteless. The help in the wine section is non-existent. I tried to get Christmas gifts there, but since I wasn't buying a $1000 bottle of wine, they didn't want to be bothered.

That's my review. The Herald's review is

I have been wondering about setting up a few Grove street cams. The Grapevine will sponsor and host them, but I don't know how to go about setting them up.

I think one in the center area of Grand, Main and McFarlane would be good. Maybe one in Peacock Park and maybe one on the water somewhere, like behind Scotty's Landing. Maybe even one on Commodore Plaza.

What do you think? BIC, Village Council? Can we discuss this?

Here is one on Duval Street in Key West, with sound! Here are some in New York City.

It's a perfect day to be out

Today is one of those perfect days, 70 degrees sunny and mild.

I started breakfast off at a little café having coffee out at a small table enjoying the 60 degree weather. I then ended up all over town, I dropped something off at Sue McConnell's house, I stopped in on AnnaMaria at the gallery, I popped in on Dave Collins at his office at Mayfair, I visited with Sandy at The Bookstore, and I popped into Focaccia for more coffee and then ended up with some of those little hamburger "sliders" at The Cheesecake Factory -- they remind me so much of White Castle burgers. I also checked out the artists painting at Tu Tu Tango.

Everyone seems to be out, all the restaurants are full of happy diners, the skater boiz are doing their thing, but this time at Peacock Park and even those in line at the post office seem to be happy and cheerful while mailing in their taxes. I think it is the weather, not the fact that they are mailing in their taxes.

Mail your income tax, no parking though

The schlumpy post office will have people outside to collect your income tax today. Since you can't park in the lot, they are being "kind enough" to accommodate you this way. They should do that on a daily basis until they fix the freakin' lot. The Grove's post office general manager should stand out there in the wind, rain, sleet and heat daily, until the job is done.

I wonder if Coral Gables or Aventura or Pinecrest would allow their post offices to be like this for months and months on end. I don't think so. Why do we allow it here in the Grove? It's been seven months already, with no improvement in sight.

Why isn't the Business Improvement Committee or Chamber of Commerce getting involved here and finding out why this mess is going on for so long? Was it necessary to kill all those trees and destroy the parking lot so it could sit this way indefinitely?

Mayfair is getting "greener"

Susie Ane-Vega of Waste Management of Dade County, made a presentation to the Merchants of Mayfair in the Grove this morning, over breakfast, provided by The Bookstore in the Grove.

In 1992 it was mandated that offices would go green. But the process was complicated -- office workers had to remove staples, bindings and other debris from paperwork before they could be put in a recycle bin. This requirement has now been eliminated making it easier for offices to participate.

Ed Prelaz, Property Manager of the Mayfair, has been searching for a company that would provide a comprehensive service and Waste Management has provided a workable format with collection bins for each office and retailer.

Tenant Crispin, Porter and Buguski has been green for some time with recycle bins at each desk and a central collection system on every floor. Even Mayfair garbage will be used beneficially -- it will be burned in power plants that provide electricity to 60,000 homes in South Florida annually.

The tourists are not amused

After seeing Harry's pictures and the scene I saw this morning, I can honestly say the Central Grove needs some major changes and fast.

This morning I was at the Subway on Grand Avenue and as the girl tried to serve people, this annoying homeless dude kept coming in, going up to people eating, and asking for money. The girl would politely ask him to leave and he would then stand outside the place and accost people leaving.

Then all of a sudden, this same dude decides to sprawl out right on the entrance of Subway. He just lay out on the sidewalk with his hands and feet spread out. I was tempted to take a picture of him, but I didn't want to give him any more attention, which is what he was craving.

Families were getting out of cars and seeing this and were aghast. One SUV full of a family of tourists from out of town (the license plate said Virginia), got right back into their SUV and left.

Many people seem to worry about bar closings at 3 or 5 am or information booths or whatever, the the real problem seems to be guys like this bum who felt like putting on a show and scaring people away on early Sunday mornings. Ironically, this is right next to the Post Office lot, which is even more of a nightmare.

That tourist family and many others must have quite an impression of the Grove these days. Sickening.

Problems around the Grove

Harry Emilio Gottlieb took a walk around the Grove and boy, is he pissed. He sent me these pictures with the comments below them:

"I don’t know who William Billy Rolle is or was, but he can’t be all that honored to have our Coconut Grove Post Office named after him. The information both is still a construction zone."

"The parking lot still looks like a landfill after removing 10 perfectly good 50 year old oak trees (and they did not even have to pull a permit from the City of Miami or even bother to discuss this travesty with our Village Council or BIC)."

"Beauty salon on Commodore Plaza trash bins on Grand are leaking foul liquids."

"Sandbar Grill trash bin on Grand is open and fowl liquids are leaking."

"Possible illegal signs are posted on a fence near US1 and Plaza."

"Discarded tire is also located in lot near signs."

Update on Charlie Brown

From Ron Beasley:

"Just a note to advise that I went to visit Charlie yesterday at the RTC at JMH. Suffice it to say that he does not look good. Those kids really did a number on him with those bricks. I believe it will be quite some time before they release him from the hospital and when they do, he will probably need some type of assisted living facility. He is awake, though, and recognized me. He shook my hand when I left and his grip was strong. So, there is some positive news to report."

I find something totally ironic about the Charlie Brown attack story.

This happened within feet of the black info/security booth on Main Highway. Where was the Kent security guy then? Giving directions to some some tourist on the nearest toilet? (Follow the tour bus and you'll find the toilets in the Grove).

Lets put the cops or security back on the horses like the old days and use that as an info/security device. The cops and horses add a lot of charm, too.

It's about the attitude, not the coffee

I thought it was just me, but I was at Starbucks with my friend from Sunny Isles today, and he said that our Starbucks in the Grove has the most unfriendliest people of all the Starbucks. I have noticed that, too. Maybe when they move across the street to CocoWalk, they'll be nicer.

There is this anomosity at Starbucks against The Bookstore in the Grove and I don't know why. Maybe the Bookstore is taking away a lot of business, I am sure with their free wifi service that may be the case.

But as Starbucks looses favor worldwide, according to recent newspaper stories, I would suggest they lose their wicked attitude. It really isn't very nice and to be honest, I think most Grove residents would prefer the local coffee places to Starbucks any day. They prefer the fresh coffee that is ground at The Bookstore, Pommes and Pane Cafe and Fococcia's and all the restaurants in the area. It's ironic that Starbucks, the most famous coffee place has pre-packaged coffee. I even love McDonald's coffee more -- hot and iced.

We happened to be at Starbucks today for their free coffee promotion. We were there five minutes early, they made us pay. We would have waited, but we were late for a meeting. That free coffee, five minutes ahead of time would have been a nice gesture. I'll stick with my usual at Fococcia's now. They treat me better.

Oh, and I would have taken a photo or two at the Starbucks, but whenever I reach for my camera, they throw me out -- store policy -- no photos. Guess they don't want me to show the unhappy staff.

Keep the Expo Center as a movie/tv studio

A lot of people are enjoying the fact that the movie and tv people are using the Grove Expo Center as their studios. Aside from the Hollywood excitement, it is adding jobs to the area, adding increased business to hotels, stores and restaurants and allowing the Grove to be seen in many background shots.

Aside from that, it's a nice, clean industry. It has a long history in the Miami area. That's Theda Bara filming a silent movie in the 1920s in Miami and below is Flipper. The tv series was filmed at the Seaquarium in the 1960s.

The Expo Center is supposed to eventually be knocked down and be made into a park according to the Waterfront Master Plan, but with "Burn Notice" using the Expo Center for their weekly tv show and so many movies using it lately, it would be a shame in these hard economic times to knock down a cash cow to the area.

Yes, I know the City leases out the Center for next to nothing, but all the residual money flowing down is adding to the
economy of Coconut Grove and Miami.

The Grove is just a toilet to them

About those Miami Nice tourist buses and other tourist buses, we found out what goes on. They aren't so nice.

These buses use the Grove as a pit stop or should I say a piss stop. The driver gives them less than 30 minutes to get a drink at Starbucks, use the bathrooms at CocoWalk and then they leave. No time to eat, no time to shop, no time to enjoy the Grove.

Not so great for business in the Grove and really just wear and tear and filth for CocoWalk to clean up. I say ban the buses. Why do we need them? To clog up the streets, take away valued parking spots to allow a bunch of people to use our bathrooms and support a coffee house chain?

I say remove those "bus parking" areas right on Grand Avenue and have the buses go somewhere else. Those parking spots are highly desired by people that want to spend time and money in the Grove, not just stop for a quick pee.

Drop them off somewhere else to use a bathroom, like the airport or bus shelter.

Here they come, here come the skaters
They're the demons on wheels

Yesterday, AnnaMaria and I went to lunch and we were talking about the skater boiz and the zombie tourists buses, about which we prefer. When we came out, we saw a tourist bus (Miami Nice) dropping off people, so we asked the driver about where they came from, where they were going, etc.

Just then, there was a buzz behind us, we turned around to ironically see a long line of skater boiz coming down the block, about 20 of them, all in a long row, just cruising down the sidewalk from CocoWalk to Mary Street.

We just froze with excitement, it was a scene right out of a movie -- right on cue. By the time I grabbed for my camera, they were gone, this is the back of them.

We stood there in awe at their grace and speed. One last skater came by about a minute later, we stopped him and asked where the rest went and wanted to know if he could send them all back so we could get pictures. He must have thought that an odd request, but he said he would. But they never did come back.

As I drove home, I passed them all at one of the buildings on Oak or Tigertail. I almost stopped to take their pictures then, but it wasn't the same as the long graceful line speeding down the block like a long snake.

I would love to get them in the King Mango Strut parade next December. I may try to organize that. AnnaMaria and I were talking about that at lunch, too. I was wondering how to get the Grapevine into the parade, maybe the skaters can skate around like a big grapevine. Hmmm. My wheels are spinning now.

Some anonymous idiot keeps posting a comment about calling the city to have these guys banned from the Grove (talk about demons, I have your IP address fool). Hope this moron does complain, it will be the added publicity we need. The last laugh will be when these skaters cruise right down the center of Main Highway and up and around onto Grand Avenue with thousands of people cheering them on in one of the Grove's most attended signature events -- the King Mango Strut -- starring "The Grapevine Skaters." I like the sound of that.

That could be the new Grapevine masthead photo up at the top. The one there now was taken after last year's Strut, on Virginia Street, outside the bookstore.

The village was out today to celebrate A.C.

Seems like the whole village was out today to celebrate A.C. and his Icees for their 30 year anniversary. Old, young, politicians, friends -- everyone showed up it seems. And the event was one of the old town, home town Grove events that make it so special here. This is "Nails" with A.C., she was in a famous photo with A.C. a few years back in The Herald.

There was plenty of free icees to go around, lots of music, a cake and speeches.

Marc Buoniconti said it best during his speech -- "A.C. is living the dream life." He sits there in his lawn chair every day, kibitzing with the beautiful people in the park as the rest of us sit in traffic going to and from work. There we are in shirts and ties, and there is A.C. sprawled out on the grass.

So many people had such great things to say -- about his dedication, loyalty, honesty. Someone suggested he run for office, but others said he was too loyal and honest for that.

One time there was an announcement at a Ransom football game -- there was a celebrity in the stands. "Who could it be? The president? A Miami Dolphin? A movie star?" No -- it was announced that A.C. was in the house and the crowd went wild -- I don't think Madonna would have received that reception.

A.C. has received many offers to have himself and his truck in movies, parties, sporting events, etc., but he turned down all the offers so that he could be at his spot in the park, at his designated times, day after day, so as not to let down his customers, who expect him to be there rain or shine. You can set your clock by A.C. -- for 30 years -- without fail. Not many people around like that anymore.

I think A.C. is a link to people's past and they enjoy the home town feel. We enjoy the same tastes and aromas that we have experienced since we were all kids, in the same exact setting. Lots of things have changed in the Grove over 30 years but you can always count on seeing A.C.s truck, you can count on his icees and you can count on Kennedy Park being there day after day. It's really a link to the past and hopefully a link to the future for many years to come.

When you visit A.C., get an icee or hot dog and look into the park, you are basically seeing what we all saw 30 years ago and for all these years since. Aside from A.C.'s long curly hair being white now, nothing has changed. A.C., his truck, his location and his icees have a comforting effect for everyone. It's like going back to a happy place
in time.

On Thursday, A.C. will be receiving a proclamation from the city at City Hall. But I don't think anything can beat the love for A.C. that was shown out there in the park today.

Will Arsht Center take over Grove Playhouse?

I mentioned, in another post, that it would be nice if someone with money could save the Playhouse, someone like Adrienne Arsht, who stepped in to bail out the Carnival Center and now there is actually talk about the Arsht Center taking over management of the Playhouse. Nothing is confirmed, and it may never happen, but at least people are starting to think in new ways about saving the institution.

I think the sooner they remove Shelley Spivak and her board, the sooner the turn around can begin.

South Florida Theater Scene's take on the situation is here.

A.C. Icees celebrates 30 years!

Boy, do I feel old. I can't believe that A.C. and his Icees have been at Kennedy Park for 30 years. I remember when he first started selling there!

A.C. was the first business to receive a mobile concession permit by the City of Miami. Tomorrow from 11 am to 1 pm, the city is celebrating at A.C.'s location at Kennedy Park (2600 South Bayshore Drive).

His white truck and colorful umbrella have made his freshly made A.C. Icees stand an icon at Kennedy Park that has remained constant in Coconut Grove throughout these years.

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Allan Cohen (A.C.) spent his vacations and free time in South Florida until 1978 when he moved to Coconut Grove and made it his home. His famous "icees" are often referred to as "constant lemonade" and good from the first slushy slurp to the last melted down drop. He has recently received a proclamation from the City as well as several awards, including Best Things Frozen in 1985; he was published in a book "The Joy of Pigging Out."

Lots going on at Café Tu Tu Tango

I ran into artist Sheri A. Friedman at Café Tu Tu Tango at CocoWalk this afternoon. She was doing her thing among the diners. This is what I had in mind for outside along the streets. One, two, maybe three artists out and about just in their own element painting and enjoying the Grove.

Tonight at Café Tu Tu Tango, they have $2.00 drafts from 4 to 7 pm for happy hour and then later at night they will have Flamenco dancers. Tarot Card reader Miss Helen will be there to tell your fortune at 10 pm and on the patio is their Friday night DJ.

As I was leaving, I saw this little skater boi below. They start young.

Indifferent parents

Drove by Kennedy Park a short time ago. Saw lots of children, small ones, maybe 3 to 5 years old, playing far away from their parents. Guess all the flyers posted around the park warning parents to keep close is falling on blind eyes and deaf ears.

Skater boiz or zombie tourists?

Some people are complaining about the Skater Boiz in the post below. I can't believe these people, they are calling them hoodlums. Very rude and wrong. These are kids being kids. They are enjoying themselves, they are being boys.

I am sure if you would stop and talk wtih them you would see they are intelligent great kids. Most kids are. How can people lump every kid with a skateboard together as being hoodlums? I don't think
Tony Hawk would agree with you. I know I don't.

Would you rather have the skater boiz enjoying the Grove or the zombie-like tourists dropped off by tour buses who walk around clueless with a Starbucks drink in their hands?

It seems that the cruise lines drop these tourists off when they don't know what to do with them while their ships are in port trying to pass inspections. There is no guide for them and they all seem to walk in the wrong direction, not knowing where to go.

I don't think they spend any money and the skaters probably don't either, but the skaters are locals, this is their village too, and they add character and life to the area. The zombie tourists don't add anything to the area, not even money.

I like all the bikers you see around here in packs on weekends. They do stop and eat and drink and add to the Grove economy, they add a lot of character and life, too

First Saturdays Art Stroll this weekend

The First Saturdays Art Stroll starts this Saturday, April 5, from 7 to 11 pm at CocoWalk.

There will be refreshments and a chance to see a lot of the Grove's new galleries.

There will also be a special staged reading of the play "Parked" by Miami native Vanessa Garcia. The successful play is on its way to Amsterdam but first, the staged reading will be at Tsori d'arte Gallery on the second level of CocoWalk at 8 pm.

The performance is a special benefit performance to raise funds for the actors travel expenses in their stay in Amsterdam representing the United States as international art ambassadors. There is no entrance fee, but donations would be gratefully accepted.

George's in the Grove coming soon

My friend and neighbor George Farge (shown here in France with children, Andreas and Camille) just called me from France, he has been back and forth all year with his family, but they will be back in the Grove for good shortly. I live in a little bayside condo in the Grove and he and his family are part of our dysfunctional family. Love them.

You may remember George from Le Bouchon du Grove, he's the loud one. He always made Le Bouchon a wild party.

We'll he's opening a new place at the beginning of May on Commodore Plaza. I think he said the name is George's in the Grove. It will be at 3145 Commodore Plaza, the old Da I' Frasca location.

George's place will have French, Italian and North African food -- fresh and organic. The seafood will be wild, the meat will have no hormones or additives. I met Bruno, his new chef yesterday. He is very excited at the new venture, too.

I'll get George to accept the Code 33 card and maybe offer specials to Grapevine readers.

Stay tuned . . .

"No Thru Trucks"

I was just telling a friend that every time I turn down a street in the Grove, it's blocked by some sort of big truck, just yesterday we had to go around the block twice because streets were being blocked in the neighborhoods. But now some good news comes on behalf of Comm. Sarnoff's office -- the Public Works Department will be installing "No Thru Trucks" signs around a lot of the Grove perimeter.

The following locations will have the signs installed: Bird Avenue at Center Street, Mary Street, Virginia Street, and Matilda Street to face southbound traffic; SW 27 Avenue at Shipping Avenue, Day Avenue, and Tigertail Avenue to face westbound traffic; SW 32 Avenue at Shipping Avenue, Day Avenue, and Oak Avenue to face eastbound traffic; Grand Avenue at Matilda Street, Virginia Street, and Mary Street to face northbound traffic.

It is anticipated that the proposed signage will keep the truck traffic on the arterial roadways in order to reach their commercial destinations in this area. This work will be accomplished within the next six weeks.

Comm. Sarnoff's response on the traffic circle

This is in response the Herald's front page article:

This traffic circle supports Miami's quality-of-life, safety and welfare campaign to improve traffic flow throughout the neighborhoods and to protect them from speeding drivers.

Virginia and Shipping is the epicenter for traffic to and from CocoWalk and Mayfair. There have been several accidents at this intersection. The Grove police commander recommended the construction of this circle.

In 1995, two area residents sought approval for a four-way stop sign. The request was rejected by Pete Hernandez, then Miami-Dade County director of public works. He now is Miami's manager. In 1996, Hernandez reversed himself and approved the sign.

On Jan. 16, 2001, the Center Grove Neighborhood Association requested a traffic circle be located on this intersection. On Jan. 29, 2001, the Association requested approval for the installation. On April 17, 2001, Public Works approved the traffic circle, and on April 18, 2001, the Fire Department granted its approval. In fact, every needed approval was accomplished in 2001.

In 2004, Cesar Gonzalez, who was a part of "The Firm," a group of Miami employees allegedly operating illegally, advised that the city and county had approved the traffic circle. Though there was not unanimity for the approval; however there was overwhelming public support for the circle.

Construction approval remained Gonzalez's desk, until I took office. As part of a campaign to calm traffic, we are addressing many cut-through streets and those visitors use to reach businesses. We have received county approval for two more traffic circles, including at Day Avenue and Matilda Street. We seek concurrence from the county for circles to slow neighborhood traffic.

We have county approval for traffic calming on Tigertail Avenue, a project that will be funded by the county. We also are awaiting a traffic study to establish more substantial traffic control devices in South Grove.

This traffic circle has been in the works for more than seven years. It is part of the city's agenda to safeguard neighborhoods.

Helping Charlie Brown

I hate to report bad news here, but I think it is important.

For those who remember and know Charlie Brown, I thought you might be interested to know that Charlie was hit in the head and face with bricks by a couple of kids early one morning about three weeks ago just outside of the Barnacle on Main Hwy and Commodore Plaza. They still haven't caught the kids.

Charlie is a Coconut Grove curmudgeon. He hails from Memphis and was boyhood friends with Elvis Presley. He came to Miami in the '60s and opened the old Gaslight South in the Grove. Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and others of that era wandered through the place before they were well known. Charlie gave up the bar business and became a writer of merit. He worked for Jack King and the old Coconut Grover among other publications, and was a columnist on the old Biscayne Bay Tribune. He was a regular at the Taurus and is something of a well-known Grovite.

He is in the hospital, but when he recuperates, he will need a place to live. Deborah Crisp is collecting funds, like they used to do at The Taurus, for needy friends. Also, if anyone knows of a little place somewhere in the Grove, to please let Deborah know. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to CHARLES ELMORE, -- his legal name, and send in care of, Deborah Crisp, at 3109 McDonald St., Coconut Grove, FL 33133. Here phone number is 305-567-9802. Be aware, that the checks will not be cashed for awhile, until they determine what Charlie needs, and where they can be deposited.

Charlie had 13 hours of surgery done on his face and skull last Saturday. He is very depleted, weak, and gaunt. He sleeps most of the time, but he is communicative, though difficult to understand. There was some injury to his brain, which may or may not resolve itself. It's a wait-and-see situation.

Charlie NOW CAN have visitors. He is in the Ryder Trauma Building, room 394. The nurses' station is 305-585-1233, and should be called to confirm Charlie's location and visiting hours.

Deborah has been to see him every couple of days. Many people had cards returned, perhaps because he has been moved five times since he got there, and his last name is Elmore, not Brown. However, there were flowers by his bed today from Linda Murphy, who obviously found him. People can send cards to Deborah, and she can bring them along when she visits.

Marketing and customer service are lacking

Marketing and customer service seems to be a problem with many businesses in the Grove. Someone mentioned on the post below that he didn't know that Cucina Creativa was a restaurant on Commodore Plaza, he thought it was a kitchen store. It does sound like it. But part of their problem was their rudeness. They are now a restaurant called Al Fresco.

I had stopped in more than once during the day, when apparently there is school going on, why school, I don't know, but I find it to be the weirdest thing. Anyway, rather than be polite and maybe hand out a menu or flyer and say, "please come back at dinner time," they practically chase you off with bats, as if you are there to molest the school children.

I have not been back since. Now that it is Al Fresco, I don't know if the same people are there during the day, "guarding" the children, but they should be told that people are looking for the restaurant and are not there to harm children -- who I think are high school kids by the way. Some customer service would do that place some wonders.

New in town: Pisco Seafood Bar & Grille

Pisco Seafood Bar & Grille -- new in the Grove at 3310B Mary Street, specializes in Peruvian cuisine, with recipes prepared by their own Chef brought directly from Peru. Although seafood, especially authentically prepared Ceviche, is the main attraction, the menu is packed with the tastiest surprises, and there is something for everyone.

If you’re counting carbs, go for a Tiradito or any one of the various Ceviche dishes. If you are not, then go for an authentic Arroz con Mariscos – a fabulous seafood and rice mélange. If meat is your thing, it’s there too.

The restaurant has an elegant dining room, sidewalk seating and a full bar that will feature Happy Hour, Monday through Friday from 5 to 8, and starting April 10, they will offer "Jazz Thursdays" with Grove favorite, Joe Donato.

Parking is directly above the street at the Oak Avenue garage or across the street. You can't miss the place, they always have such elegant white covered tables outside.

Trouble in Kennedy Park

This past Saturday, March 29, at approximately 5:00 pm, in Kennedy Park, two-year-old Savannah was almost taken by a man on a bicycle. Savannah, was playing tag with her nannies who were about four feet from her when a man on a bicycle passed them and proceeded to scoop Savannah up and put her on his lap while riding.

He was cycling off with her when the nannies chased him down, screaming for him to stop. The nannies cornered the man and grabbed the toddler from his arms. When they began calling for the police the man raced off on his bicycle.

Description: White Caucasian Male aged 50–60, light eyes, believed to be homeless. Wearing old, dirty clothes and riding an old-fashioned bicycle. If you see this man, please call the police.

Playhouse charrette update

Not much really came out of the weekend Playhouse Charrette. Lots of talk, no answers. The Herald has a recap here.

I really don't like the idea of Aries Development being involved. I guess the word "development" scares me. One of the plans has residents somewhere ensconced in the new playhouse. I don't like that.

I know Aries gave the playhouse the money when they needed it, but that is like selling your soul to the devil, it would have been better if a philanthropist like Adrienne Arsht stepped in, rather than a developer. Adrienne is the one who gave all those millions to the failing Carnival Center. But I guess you can't have
it all.
