Moving the Urban Development Boundry
The sell outs on the County Commission ignored everyone except the greedy developers yesterday and agreed by a 9-4 vote to move the Urban Development Boundry.
Says Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz: "Hold the line. What it does say is we need a compelling purpose." Guess Pepe was asleep on Earth Day. Water, air and quality of life doesn't matter to him.
The other sell outs: Joe Martinez, Natacha Seijas, Audrey Edmonson, Rebeca Sosa, Dorrin Rolle, Bruno Barreiro, Barbara Jordan and Javier Souto.
The Green people: Commissioners Katy Sorenson, Carlos Gimenez, Sally Heyman and Dennis Moss.

I watched the whole thing on TV yesterday and it was extremely disappointing. They moved the boundary line to make room for a new Lowes Store. Lowes already has an empty lot to build on within the line. But of course, they want to build a "bigger" store, which means they need to encroach on the Everglades. Lowes PROMISES (but is not guaranteed....so we know what that means) to build a Charter School which is desperately needed in the area. However, they are not REQUIRED to build a charter school under the current contract with the city. There was support from local residents who say that they desparately need a new school in the area. What the residents apparently don't realize is that even if a Charter School is built, it won't necessarily help the immediate area because Charter Schools bus kids in from all over Dade County. It is very frustrating to be a citizen of this City. We don't care about anything but the big bucks.
And on a side note, but also relating to local development, sadly The Grove Estates project next door to The Kampong was approved yesterday.
Surprised?
Have you heard of the Rentier Effect? With our over-bloated tax bills and fat politicians, our city fits the model of a Rentier City perfectly. Recently Paul Krugman had an article about the emergence of Rentier Cities, the problem is no one understood the article and it got completely ignored. Basically Rentier Effect means the government can ignore the rights of its citizens because it has the indisputable right to lucrative resources (in Miami that means taxes) which it can arbitrarily increase without much opposition. The opposition is inexistent because the locals are not active or are suppressed in political/electoral process or are irrelevant because much of the income of the government is financed by tourist money and snow birds who do not have voting rights, therefore the residents are shafted ultimately. This is the riddle to the problems of our city: a Rentier City.
didn't the county mayor say he would veto this if they approved it?
The Herald said he would veto, but the commission has enough votes to override (unless some of them change their minds at the last minute).
No, no, your are looking at this all wrong-- you see, our County Commissioners think we don't have nearly enough Big Box home improvement stores, given their constituents manic quest for constant home improvement, so they thoughtfully moved the Urban Development Boundary in order to squeeze in a much needed Lowe's-- after all what's a river of grass good for -- at Lowe's there's a great garden store. Who needs quality of life in nature when you can troll your local Big Box and build your own simulated natural surroundings?
Since we're getting rid of those pesky Everglades, I say we don't have a need for that Marjory Stoneman Douglas shack-- if we can't bulldoze it outright and build a nice McMansion or 2, maybe we can gussie up the place-- give it a little Mediterranean flair, you know, some faux finishes in ochre- to get that Fake-South-of-France look we love so much, maybe add one of those 3 tiered fountains, throw in a little Feng Shui, a deck and a gas barbecue grill. Oh, and definitely one of those mailboxes that looks like a replica of the house-- really cute! I do love South Florida! -- Margot Channing
PS- thank you Carlos Gimenez-- for not embarrassing the Grove!
Why does it seem that whenever Commissioner Gimenez votes, he really votes what he believes to be right? He can't be that honest, can he?
