David Hertzig
David Herzig with his grandchildren
You may remember the story we posted earlier this week, Monday morning, September 24, 85 year old David Hertzig was hit by a car while on his bicycle, by a "newer blue Jaguar."
He was in the hospital with serious injuries up until today when he passed away from those injuries.
Apparently the driver, according to witnesses, a well dressed white male in his 50s or 60s, stopped and got out and then slipped away before the ambulance or police came. This took place on Douglas and Charles, near the cemetery.
The accident is now considered a homicide.
If you know anything about this, please contact Detective Jose Sepulveda of the Miami Police Department at 305-603- 6525.

Miami Dolphins running back Frank Gore surprised the Coconut Grove Hornets Pop Warner group at Armbrister Park with new football equipment.
When he was young, played for the Hornets and also practiced at Armbrister Park. Frank gifted the players with Junior Dolphins branded shirts, Dolphins branded footballs, Gatorade bottles, cones, end zone pylons, tackling dummies and a chain set and down markers. Frank also gave the players a pep talk on football and the advantages of staying in school.
The Junior Dolphins program is designed to give kids access to learn the fundamentals of football using the NFL’s top resources.

State Senate approves Aaron Cohen Act
No word on finding the driver who left the bicycle accident regarding David Hertzig the other day, but interestingly enough, by a unanimous vote Wednesday, the Florida Senate passed a bill creating tougher penalties for drivers who leave the scene of a fatal accident, it's called the Aaron Cohen Protection Act, named after a bicyclist who was killed by a driver who hit and run.

South Grove cyclist hit by car; driver takes off
Monday morning, September 24, a friend called to tell me she came upon an older man on the ground on Douglas Road, he was hit by a car and had fallen off his bicycle, he was on his way to work downtown.
She called his family and an ambulance and police , who arrived shortly after, the worst part is that the car and driver that hit him slipped away when no one was looking.
Today I heard from his daughter, Amie Hertzig, who lives in the South Grove. She says she was told that her 85 year old father, David Hertzig was hit by a car while on his bicycle, by a "newer blue Jaguar." She did not see the accident and was told this by witnesses at the scene.
Apparently the driver, according to witnesses, a well dressed white male in his 50s or 60s, stopped and got out and then slipped away before the ambulance or police came. This took place on Douglas and Charles, near the cemetery.
Amie is now looking for those witnesses or anyone who might be able to identify the man.
She contacted me from Ryder Trauma where her father is in critical condition fighting for his life. He has a broken shoulder, ribs, and pelvis. Monday he had emergency surgery for internal bleeding and a collapsed lung. He is in extreme pain.
"My father is an incredible and noble man. He was the chairman at UM Mathematics since the 1970s and has now returned to work at Miami-Dade to help support myself, a single parent with two children. He was riding to work when the hit and run occurred," she says
Amie is desperately seeking help to find the person who hit her father and ran off.
Her phone number is 305-445-6306. Or please contact Detective Jose Sepulveda of the Miami Police Department at 305-603- 6525.
Hopefully one of you might know something.

Stoneman Douglas cottage receiving TLC

There recently was a stakeholder meeting concerning the Marjory Stoneman Douglas House.
The Division of Recreation and Parks (DRP) continues to consider possible options for the long-term management of the property.
Work at the house has continued and includes:
- Installation of a new air conditioning system
- Installation of a new alarm system
- Mold remediation project completed with the restoration of the plaster wall surrounding the fireplace. (Project was overseen by local architect Richard Heisenbottle.)
- Restoration and re-installation of the kitchen cabinets, counter tops and replica linoleum flooring.
- Lawn service hired and the state property is being mowed weekly.
- Park staff from the Barnacle continue to make regular trips to the house to maintain the state property.
The house was built between 1924-1926, it is located at 3744 Stewart Avenue. Mrs. Douglas lived in the house from 1926 until her death in 1998 at age 108. She left the house to the State of Florida.
DRP has issued a support letter for the installation of a historic marker on the property through the historic marker program managed by the State Division of Historic Resources. Members of the public expressed a strong interest in greater recognition of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the designation of the house as a National Historic Landmark. DRP is pleased to support this effort to recognize of one of Florida’s most notable citizens.
"It is the responsibility of DRP to regulate public access to the property, promote public safety and provide a quality visitor experience. We want to ensure that we continue to serve as good stewards and good neighbors. We look forward to working with all of you to increase public enjoyment of this important historic resource," says Sine Murray, Planning and Policy Coordinator of the Florida Park Service.

Million Orchid Project takes over Coconut Grove
Miami City Commissioner Ken Russell, the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID) and botanists from Fairchild Botanical Garden, along with volunteers of all ages will mount 250 rare and endangered orchid seedlings onto tree trunks at the intersection of Main Highway, Grand Avenue and McFarland Road on Monday, September 24.
“Launching the Million Orchid Project to Coconut Grove brings all the things we love about the Grove together: environment, history and beauty," said Commissioner Russell. “This is just the beginning of a bigger vision for thoughtful beautification in Coconut Grove.”
To combat the near-extinction of South Florida’s native orchid population, Fairchild’s Million Orchid Program is helping reintroduce rare and endangered orchid species into our urban landscape. Schoolyards, hospitals and roadways are just some of the recipients of the reintroduction initiative, which aims to have the first generation of reestablished orchids blooming throughout South Florida within five years.
The return of orchids to the Grove will reinforce the neighborhood’s ‘Garden District’ identity and beautify and enhance the street-level experience for workers, visitors, and residents alike.
The agenda:
8:30 – 9:00 am: Welcome and coffee at The Bookstore and Kitchen (3444 Main Hwy)
9:00 – 9:15 am: VIP remarks
9:45 – 10:00 am: Orchid planting

Local students named Obama Scholar
Noa Richard a Ransom Everglades graduate, has been named a Barack Obama Scholar by Occidental College, recognized as an exceptional student committed to the public good, in keeping with the principles advanced by the liberal arts college’s best-known alumnus.
As an inaugural Obama Scholar, she will receive a four-year scholarship that will meet the entire cost of her education, in addition to summer enrichment programs and access to the program’s advisory council.
 |
| Noa Richard |
"Noa was selected for her kindness, her creativity and her sensitivity to issues of social and environmental injustice,” says Wendy Sternberg, Occidental’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College. “Noa has found her passion and voice with social causes, activism and volunteerism. She is a compassionate, intellectual activist—an amazing young woman."
Noa is interested in becoming a writer and journalist and in pursuing the critical theory and social justice major at Occidental. At her high school, she was president of the Natural Rights Initiative, dedicated to raising awareness of and acting against human rights violations globally and in the Miami community; the founder of W.I.N. Miami, an organization that supports women at domestic abuse shelters; and a mentor at Achieve Miami, teaching reading to elementary-school students with low literacy levels in disadvantaged neighborhoods. She also created, directed and filmed a documentary, “Syrian Women in Miami,” using proceeds awarded from a fellowship grant, in which she interviewed recently arrived Syrian refugee women.
Launched last year, the Obama Scholars program represents Occidental’s investment in students who aspire to become change agents but may lack the opportunity to fully realize their goals, and continues the legacy of leadership embodied by President Obama, a member of the Occidental Class of 1983.
“My years at Occidental sparked my interest in social and political causes, and filled me with the idea that my voice could make a difference,” President Obama said. “I’m proud of the Obama Scholars mission to identify promising young people from all backgrounds, not only to give them access to higher education, but to train the next generation of leaders and active citizens, and fill them with the conviction that they too can change the world.”
Obama Scholars will have the opportunity to take full advantage of Occidental’s wide range of academic programs, hands-on experiences such as working at United Nations-related organizations in New York or on a major political campaign, full access to summer internships, support in conducting research projects and study abroad.

It's what the Grove should be
I was at a little shopping village with a bunch of "micro boutiques" in Upper Buena Vista yesterday. It reminded me so much of what Coconut Grove could and should be. It's called a "retail sanctuary."
What's great about it is that they kept the foliage and worked around it. It's shady and cool and a tropical oasis amid the cement that makes up a big part of the rest of that neighborhood.
The little shops surround a 90-year-old banyan tree (very Grove-like) and the small boutiques all flow around a small market area at 50th Street and 2nd Avenue. It was originally little bungalows on one plot of land.
The inter-connected micro boutiques are 500 square feet and smaller and art, fashion and food and drinks co-mingle at the space. Cory Finot's second Café Crème faces the main street, the original Café Crème is in North Miami Beach, I've been to both now, it's a bakery/coffee shop. There is also Kraken Lab, a sushi place; Amazonica, a tropical food and drink place and Vista, an Italian restaurant and rooftop bar.
Wooden walkways tie it all together. There are over-sized pieces of public art strewn around like Mickey Mouse and Pinocchio. Many boutiques fill the space from clothing, art, handmade sandals, sneakers, cabinets, sunglasses and so much more.
Their manifesto says, "This is the place where curious discovery meets thoughtful craftsmanship. An escape from the fast-paced bustle of a growing city reminding you to relax at every turn and breathe." Sort of like all of Coconut Grove used to be. Huh?
So many people are trying to make the Grove into something it isn't. This is what the Grove should be. This is what Florentine Plaza could be, CocoWalk, too, and so many other places in the village. This is what the Grove is.

Looks like the booters are gone
Good news. The car booters are gone. For now anyway.
The city is trying to work out a new plan with them and hopefully they never return.
The parking lot behind Florentine Plaza, on Fuller and Grand, now has an attendant and it's monitored now and sneaky booters can't get in there and boot people. Southpark Management runs the lot now. Nicole Singletary, BID director, tells me that the BID got involved and helped make this happen.
Also, the booters are gone from the lot near the 24 Hour Gym on Grand Avenue.
Also, some good news about the Optimum Development office building going up next to Greenstreet. One traffic lane had been closed for a few weeks due to construction. It's open now. It could possibly close if inspections don't pass, but for now, drive freely on Main Highway.
I'm not sure what the rates for that lot is, but the Florentine Plaza lot charges these rates seen here. They're a bit more than street parking, but much less than the flat $10 rate that was previously the rule in the lot, whether you parked for one minute or an hour or more.

What's going on with the destroyed docks?
Nice picture, huh? Well not for the many people who are still waiting for the docks at Dinner Key Marina to be repaired. They are still in bad shape after last September's Hurricane Irma.
The city finally met with their insurer along with FEMA officials last week. They now know that the City of Miami has $8.9 million in insurance claim money for repairs.
The estimated hurricane related repairs are $10.3 million.
The city's Director of Capital Improvements tells me that the estimated non-hurricane related repairs (primarily utility repairs required before the storm) are $3.2 million.
Taking into consideration design and other general and administrative costs, the total repair is $15 million.
I've been told, "We are working with FEMA to identify what they will cover of the difference between the $10.3 million and $8.9 million."
The city is also working with FEMA to determine if they will cover any future mitigation costs above the $15 million. In other words, if there are ways to build the marina to better protect against future storms, what and how much will FEMA cover?
The city intends to proceed with a design-build for the marina repairs. "We are setting up an Industry Day in a few weeks to attract marina construction firms to present their interest, capabilities and experience," says the Capital Improvements director.
A month or so after that the city will release a design-build RFP.
People are still paying for their dock space and the city is receiving business interruption insurance for those that are not usable. Another of the complex insurance issues is how long and for how much will that insurance cover?
Most boats are still there, some are either at other locations or no longer have a need for a slip. As construction begins, it will be done in phases in order to try to keep as many boats at the marina at a time. In the end, they will do their best to ensure people get the slips they have historically had, but, no promises.

An evening with Senator Bob Graham
This is another fun memory from the Bookstore in the Grove. This first ran on Dec. 10, 2011.
Senator Bob Graham drew a large crowd on Friday night for the signing of his new book, "Keys to the Kingdom," a 314-page political thriller. The scene was The Bookstore in the Grove.
Many friends were among the throng who listened intently as Sen. Graham talked about his new release. Graham is very well known around these parts, he served for 18 years in the U.S. Senate and before that was a two-term Governor of Florida.

I always think of him as Governor and the evening sort of came full circle for me. In the 1980s my job was to do the production work for newspapers and magazines, I literally put them together. One of the publications had a letter from Gov. Graham at the time and we published the letter in the newspaper. But when it was time to give back the letter to the publisher, I kept it. I figured in my head that Gov. Graham would be President of the U.S. one day and that I would have his signature.
Of course, that never happened, but he did leave the Senate with an 83% approval rating, so you can't beat that, I guess. I told him my story as he signed my book, he laughed. And now that I have the signed book, the whole signature thing has come full circle, I now have the two signatures, one from the 1980s and one in the new book.
Above right is Mrs. Adele Graham, the Senator's wife, who I spent a bit of time talking with, and Felice Dubin, co-owner of The Bookstore. Mrs. Graham is very easy to talk with. I enjoyed our conversation, we were taking about Coconut Grove. The Graham's always remind me of Arva Moore Parks, who they went to school with and it was Arva who persuaded Gov. Graham to save The Barnacle from destruction and becoming grounds for a condo, back in 1977.

The evening reminded me of that time when Arva signed her book about Coconut Grove in October of last year. It was a full house and so much history was talked about both evenings. When Arva was here, it was mostly Grovites, but Friday night, for Sen. Graham's book, there were more out-of-towners. Mrs. Graham told me that the Grove crowd had more intellectuals than most of the others in their book tour. She could tell by the questions that were being asked. It did get quite intense as there is so much information about the middle east and the 9/11 attacks in the book.
Above left are Felice Dubin, Harry Emilio Gottlieb and Sen. Graham; at right, yours truly with the Senator. Harry put the whole evening together and introduced the Senator at the beginning of the evening.

"Keys to the Kingdom," features a former Senator named John Billington, who is murdered near his Florida home. Ex-Special Forces operative Tony Ramos then enters the scene to solve the crime with Billington's daughter, Laura. The thriller revolves around the 9/11 attacks and revolves around Saudi Kingdom conspiracies including the likes of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda. It was quite chilling at times to hear Sen. Graham speak on the subject since he is privy to so much information, he still works on committees with the CIA, even in his retirement.

It was a great evening, the goodies passed around were delicious, too. People were honored to meet Sen. Graham. He's very humble and easy to speak with. There was a long line to get the books signed and it seemed like forever for it to move because Sen. Graham actually took so much time out to speak with each person. He signed each book personally, for each person.

You can see mine here, he writes, "Tom, Thank you for preserving this evening at The Bookstore in the Grove. Best Wishes for the Holiday Season and New Year." And he signed and dated it. He knew I was covering the event for publication, so he mentioned "preserving it."
That reminds me of the time that Susie Essman was at The Bookstore signing books. She wrote in mine, "Tom, stay focused," and I wondered, "How did she know me that well? People always tell me that I am too hyper and all over the place, but I am focused, but maybe she sees me as being unfocused." When I asked her about it she said, "Aren't you a photographer? That's what I meant!" That was funny and a good night, too.
There are extra books signed by Sen. Graham and if you get to The Bookstore (3399 Virginia Street) now, you can probably get one, the book would make a great holiday gift.

Former Ransom-Everglades English teacher and Grove resident Dan Leslie Bowden, passed away Friday at age 89 after a long illness. Many Grove residents would attend Dan's annual reading of Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory," because he was such a colorful, entertaining speaker. He was the heart and soul of Ransom Everglades school.
I didn't know Mr. Bowden, but I would see him at Starbucks so many times over the years. He seemed to know everyone who came in, so many of them were his students and former students.
Ransom is planning a memorial.

Scooters pass first step in approval process
The City of Miami Commission took a first step in approving a one-year motorized scooter pilot program for District 2 on Thursday. Coconut Grove is part of the district, along with Downtown Miami and Brickell. The ordinance, co-sponsored by District 2 Commissioner Vice Chairman Ken Russell and Mayor Francis Suarez, passed on First Reading. It will be scheduled for Second Reading at a later date.
The scooters had appeared on the streets in June and were removed just as fast due to lack of regulations.
“Today’s decision is an important step towards providing a safe and efficient transportation alternative for our residents,” said Mayor Francis Suarez. “As a forward-thinking city, I am encouraged by the Commission’s willingness to embrace an innovative solution to one of our most pressing issues – traffic and congestion. I look forward to this item passing on second reading, so we can prioritize safety as we work to roll out this first and last mile transit solution."
"I'm in favor of many approaches to solving our traffic issues, particularly those that help fill the 'last-mile' gaps between neighborhoods and public transit," said Commissioner Russell. "This legislation allows scooters to operate under government regulation. It's a pilot program in my district and I'm excited to test this transit solution."
The ordinance passed unanimously. Per the ordinance, the proposed pilot program will automatically terminate on October 31, 2019.

Will the city raise parking rates?
The City Commission will be discussing whether to raise parking rates for metered parking at today (Thursday's) meeting. The Miami Parking Authority has proposed raising city meter parking in many areas of the city by as much as $1.50 more per hour.
The reasoning for this is that the city needs more money. Let that sink in. The hog of a city, which permits building on top of building so they can get more taxes, now needs more money from people parking.
The interesting thing about this is that the MPA has proposed to double the parking officers (meter maids) in order to enforce the parking. So in essence, the money raised will go to the enforcers.
The city claims that the brunt of the people paying the new rates would be people driving into the city for work, from other municipalities in Miami-Dade County. So let's punish those who come to the City of Miami to work.
Maybe the city can build more garages and sell them to developers for top dollar as they did the Oak Street Garage, this way alleviating drivers from paying higher parking fees.
Just another lack of quality of life issue in the City of Miami.
