David Hertzig

David Herzig with his grandchildren

You may remember the story we posted earlier this week, Monday morning, September 24,  85 year old David Hertzig was hit by a car while on his bicycle, by a "newer blue Jaguar."

He was in the hospital with serious injuries up until today when he passed away from those injuries.

Apparently the driver, according to witnesses, a well dressed white male in his 50s or 60s, stopped and got out and then slipped away before the ambulance  or police came. This took place on Douglas and Charles, near the cemetery.

The accident is now considered a homicide.

If you know anything about this, please contact Detective Jose Sepulveda of the Miami Police Department at 305-603- 6525.

Gosh I’m so sorry to hear about his passing. I think this accident should be reported to the news and tv and car repair shops to be on the lookout for that type of vehicle which I’m sure has damage. Sad that someone lost his life because of a selfish, inconsiderate, cowardly person. My condolences to David’s family.

So sad. And exactly why my bike is in the garage, gathering dust.

The driver broke the Aaron Cohen Protection Act, a law created just for situations like this, and is subject to a mandatory sentence. It used to be, before the law was passed in 2014, that people could get away with this kind of thing with a minimum or no sentence. No more. He has to be found--hunted down and prosecuted as he deserves.--Hank Sanchez-Resnik, Executive Director, Bike Coconut Grove and Co-chair, Friends of the Commodore Trail

There has to be a way to catch the killer, how many blue jaguars are from the grove? Can’t anyone trace the car?

Condolences to the family. Let’s find the bastard with the blue jag and put him away! (He may not have been a Grove resident but someone working downtown or on Brickell rushing to his office). Keep your eyes open!

The time is critical. The initial Grape account reads "Monday morning, September 24". I'm guessing Mr. Hertzig was bicycling on the East side of Douglas heading towards U.S. # 1, possibly turning Right on Grand. The time is critical and by that I mean the driver could easily live in the Grove or perhaps further South and came down Cutler Ridge. That section of road is heavily traveled, yet no other driver has reported seeing the accident, is that correct? That might indicate it was the early A.M., when there was less traffic. The driver surely has changed his route. Could the Grape ask people along these routes to check there camera's for this vehicle? J.S.

Bad, sad news. I literally just saw a news report, 10/01/2018, 6:00 A.M., on channel # 4. The report said that the driver got out of his car and talked with several people at the scene. The driver was about 5'10", blond or grayish hair. The news report showed a picture of the vehicle model and color. J.S.
