South Grove cyclist hit by car; driver takes off

Monday morning, September 24, a friend called to tell me she came upon an older man on the ground on Douglas Road, he was hit by a car and had fallen off his bicycle, he was on his way to work downtown.

She called his family and an ambulance and police , who arrived shortly after, the worst part is that the car and driver that hit him slipped away when no one was looking.

Today I heard from his daughter, Amie Hertzig, who lives in the South Grove. She says she was told that her 85 year old father, David Hertzig was hit by a car while on his bicycle, by a "newer blue Jaguar." She did not see the accident and was told this by witnesses at the scene.

Apparently the driver, according to witnesses, a well dressed white male in his 50s or 60s, stopped and got out and then slipped away before the ambulance  or police came. This took place on Douglas and Charles, near the cemetery.

Amie is now looking for those witnesses or anyone who might be able to identify the man.

She contacted me from Ryder Trauma where her father is in critical condition fighting for his life. He has a broken shoulder, ribs, and pelvis. Monday he had emergency surgery for internal bleeding and a collapsed lung. He is in extreme pain.

"My father is an incredible and noble man. He was the chairman at UM Mathematics since the 1970s and has now returned to work at Miami-Dade to help support myself, a single parent with two children. He was riding to work when the hit and run occurred," she says

Amie is desperately seeking help to find the person who hit her father and ran off.

Her phone number is 305-445-6306. Or please contact Detective Jose Sepulveda of the Miami Police Department at 305-603- 6525.

Hopefully one of you might know something.

The driver who "slipped away" has broken a law that was created in 2014 after a young cyclist and the father of two, Aaron Cohen, was killed by a drunk driver early one weekend morning on the Rickenbacker Causeway. The law, named after Aaron Cohen, imposes minimum penalties for leaving the scene of a crash involving a bicyclist. Previously, there had been no mandatory penalties and the driver who killed Aaron Cohen got off with less than a year in jail. Now there are mandatory penalties. The driver who "slipped away" committed not just a legal crime. He committed an act of moral indecency.--Hank Sanchez-Resnik, Executive Director, Bike Coconut Grove and Co-chair, Friends of the Commodore Trail

This is David’s other daughter. Thank you so much for the well wishes and prayers for my father. We want to clarify that my sister was told that it appeared my father had been hit by the vehicle in question, and she did not witness the accident herself. We are seeking answers from anyone who might have witnessed the accident or can provide more information. Please contact Detective Jose Sepulveda of the Miami Police Department at (305) 603- 6525. Again thank you for the thoughts and prayers. Please keep them coming! Beth Hertzig

This was during rush hour. Somebody must have seen this happen. I hope the best for your father, and the toughest penalty to the person who hit him. AS a cyclist, myself, I cannot tell you how dangerous Miami is. Godspeed.

Is it possible to back-access cell phone records with the location and time of the hit & run or Jaguar GPS records to narrow the search for the driver?

Dear Beth and Hertzig family, many prayers for a speedy recovery. With all the love around him, your father will pull through. The same thing happened to my grandmother at about 85 years old here in Miami- 15 years back. She was walking. It was a long road, but with patience and love she came back stronger than ever! Much love. -WS

I am a Canadian friend Amie's who has known her family for many years from the time they have spent up on the Island I lived on in British Columbia. David is a kind and loving father and grandfather. He has been very important to helping Amie raise her wonderful Daughter and Son as a single Mom. Any kindness, support, or help this family could get at this time would be wonderful. Many good family friends up in Canada would be very grateful!
