Remembering Mad Men and Mad Men Monday

We just celebrated out 10th birthday, so to celebrate, throughout the year, we'll be sharing some fun posts from the past. In 2009 and 2010, we had a weekly event at the Mayfair Hotel bar called Mad Men Monday. I spent most of this weekend watching the Mad Men marathon which is being played in anticipation of Sunday night's finale of Mad Men. Here's a little blast from the past, one of our Mad Men Mondays, which happened to be a birthday party, too.  Each week it was a fun group of friends and you never knew who would pass through the happy hour event. This post is from August 31, 2010.

And here's a link to all of the Mad Men photos and stories from that time that were posted here in the Grapevine.

  mm4
In our little reality show world, known as the Grapevine, the characters all meet up on Mondays at Mad Men Monday at the Mayfair Hotel, the only difference is that there is no drama here since it's all friends and not many or any frenemies.

You'll see Daisy from the Bed Race or Felice from the Bookstore or Monty from the Arts Festival and it's all one, nice meetup once a week for friends to mix and mingle. Last night was no exception, we met for drinks as usual (I had 7&7's last night), but we also celebrated Lili Dones' birthday.

mm1
Lili's birthday was actually the day before, but we like to celebrate birthdays at Mad Men Mondays, we have had quite a few. Steven Anton Rehage got Lili a great gift in the form of gold earrings, which she had been admiring. You'll notice Betty and Don Draper on a Mad Men episode on the tv in the background.

mm3
Daisy Lewis and Richard Issa flank Lili.

mm5
Heico Dobrikow, manager of the Mayfair Hotel & Spa, Michelle Niemeyer and Willie Vega, who celebrated his birthday at the Mayfair on Friday night.

mm7
Steven Rehage, Maria Korge, Monty Trainer, Lili Dones, Felice Dubin and Tom Falco.

mm2
Rosy and Juan are excellent hosts.

Mad Men Monday will take a break next week due to the Labor Day holiday and most of us will be recovering from the long Bed Race day, but it will be back Monday, September 13.

Mad Men Monday or Monday Night Football?

Mad Men Monday sometimes has many people and sometimes just a few. Last Monday there were only three of us, but we had a good time. It was Lili, Kathy and me.

I don't remember what we talked about, but it wasn't Mad Men. We never really talk about Mad Men, except the one week when Lili told Harry what happened in the episode the night before, word for word, but it's usually not about that.

We are thinking of making it Monday Night Football night, because they do show the game on the tv, but Mad Men Monday Happy Hour is usually over by that time anyway. So it can be both, Mad Men Monday and Monday Night Football.

There are only a couple more weeks of Mad Men season four, so we probably won't have Mad Men Monday's until the new season starts next summer, I guess. Besides, the Lobby Bar at the Mayfair is now in the process of being turned into a Trattoria. We were offered the pool bar on the roof, but it's not the same.

I was at the Mayfair on Friday night for Barry Alberts' Wine Tasting. I went to the hotel's front desk to ask them something and when I turned around, I didn't know where I was, I was disoriented, because there is a big black wall blocking off the lobby bar, so it just didn't look familiar. It was weird. Anyway, the whole point of this is to say that Mad Men Monday will be back next season. But if we decide to have a few drinks at the pool on the roof, we'll let you know and you can join us.

Slip into Mad Men Monday and unwind

drinks
Mad Men Monday is back after a holiday break last week. Monday, July 12 get ready to party like it's 1963. As usual, it is in the swanky lobby bar of the Mayfair Hotel (3000 Florida Avenue).

Sidle up to the bar with Tom and Rob, that's Tom Collins and Rob Roy, or any of your favorite throwback cocktails from the 1960s and celebrate
Mad Men.

Enter through the side entrance, on Virginia Street, into the slinky, sleek '60s scene. Drinks are only $3.50. Stay for a three course dinner for only $21.00.

You don't have to be a Mad Men fan, you just have to enjoy good cocktails and good conversation. Bring your friends. Grab a side table or bar stool and unwind.

It's a great place to ease into the work week each Monday, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Mad Men is glowing from the tv in the background, while 1960s music plays throughout the dark lobby bar. Start a Monday after work tradition. The new season of Mad Men begins July 25, but ease in early at Mad Men Mondays.

Here are some pictures from the last
Mad Men Monday.

Mad Men Monday is for mad women too!

A friend told me she didn't come to Mad Men Monday because she didn't feel comfortable hanging out with business men and talking business.

That's not what it is about.

Mad Men is a tv show that takes place in the 1960s, so the Mad Men Monday Happy Hour is basically a 1960s themed Happy Hour. While the tv show is playing in the corner, it is very inconsequential. Mad Men Monday is about the '60s era drinks and music.

No one is speaking business there. There is lots of fun and it's full of happy people. Most of them are actually women. So hopefully, this will dispel the rumor that it's a business man's meeting.

Come out, have a Martini, Gimlet or Manhattan. Mix and mingle with friends. No business is spoken, honest, unless you want to, it is a great place to network. Mad Men Monday is at the Mayfair Hotel Lobby Bar from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. On Mondays, of course.

Where is Mad Men Monday?

People have been asking about Mad Men Monday, our weekly 1960s music and cocktail-fest at the Mayfair Hotel lobby bar.

Well, the Mayfair lobby bar is now the Italian restaurant called
Spartico and Mad Men's new season does not start for awhile, it usually comes back in July, but according to a recent article in the New York Times, the show may be delayed due to money problems.

We aren't sure if Mad Men Monday will return to the Mayfair because of the restaurant, but why not? There's a bar there and it's a perfect night to fill the bar before dinner, we usually meet from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

We can start Mad Men Monday before the 5th season starts, we usually have reruns showing on the tv in the corner anyway. We'll see what we can come up with, I can almost taste that Tom Collins and Harvey Wallbanger now. But it's more fun to do it during the Mad Men tv season, since everyone is all about Med Men (and women) then -- it's all over tv, the news and magazines and on everyone's lips.

Mad Men Monday at the Mayfair kicks off tonight

Mad Men Monday kicks off tonight, June 28, as a Chamber Networker. Last week Willie Vega and Liliana Dones tried some drinks in preparation for tonight. It's tough being a Chamber member and having to try drinks (for quality control) but they did it for the team.

The theme at Mad Men Mondays is 1960s. The music and the drinks of that era are featured and the tv show Mad Men is playing in the background.

It's a lot of fun, and you don't have to be a fan of the show or dress up in '60s garb, you have to be just a fan of 1960s cocktails and music and of course the camaraderie of friends in the slinky dark Lobby Bar at the Mayfair Hotel (3000 Florida Avenue).

This would be a great opportunity for many of you who are interested in getting into the mix of the Grove. Come out, meet new people, start helping move and shake the Grove. It's a comfortable, fun atmosphere with lots of laughs and you'll feel totally welcome.

Slink in through the side door on Virginia Street and enjoy drinks and snacks. There never is an entrance free for Mad Men Mondays, but this week there is a $5 fee for the networker, that's for Chamber members and for those are are not members, it's only $10 and that includes a free welcome drink and canapes.

All Classic 1960s drinks are only $3.50 after that and they are twice the size of the originals! Think Tom Collins, Harvey Wallbanger, Screwdrivers, etc.

And if you are so inclined, stay for a Mad Men pre fix dinner, only $21.00 for three courses.

Original July 4th t-shirts and posters will be available tonight. Shirts are $15 and posters $10.

Locals getting into the groove of Mad Men Monday

mad4
The Mayfair Hotel lobby bar was the scene for another Mad Men Monday Happy Hour. From the far end of the bar is Ed Ferenczi, Garrett Moseley, Richard Issa, Steven Rehage, Sylvia Quinn, Mary MacDonald and Lili Dones, the perfect cast for a Grove reality show. Actually maybe not, they all get along so well, there isn't much drama there. Mad Men plays on the tv, '60s music plays in the background and 1960s-era drinks flow at special prices.

mad3
At left: Doreen LoCicero and husband Robert Perkins; right: Manny Alonzo-Poch, Alice Land,

madmen
Mad Men is back with a new season on July 25, but Mad Men Mondays is back at the Mayfair Hotel Lobby Bar starting June 7.

Come out and enjoy 1960s cocktails for $3.50 each. Not all of these cocktails are served, but
here is a list of many of the mid century favorites. And stick around for a delicious 3-course dinner for only $21.00. You don't have to be a Mad Men fan, you just have to enjoy good cocktails and good conversation. Bring your friends. Grab a side table or bar stool and unwind.

It's a great place to ease into the work week each Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Mad Men is glowing from the tv in the background, while 1960s music plays throughout the dark lobby bar. Don Draper would fit right in.

Chamber members enjoy going Mad on Monday

chamber5
Thanks to the Grove Chamber, the first Mad Men Monday of the season was a huge success. The Lobby Bar at the Mayfair Hotel was packed with happy people. They plan to add a pizza oven and turn the bar into some sort of Trattoria but we are assured that the dark slinky atmosphere will remain. It is a great space.

chamber1
Peter Laird, Mia Stierheim, Gaea Garrity and Steven Anton Rehage.

chamber2
Ed Ferenczi, Garrett Moseley, Caron Lutton van Deventer, Ken Drodvillo.

chamber3
Lili Dones, Michelle Niemeyer; David Guzikowski, Manny Alonzo-Poch, Willie Vega, doing Chamber business in the middle of the party -- true Mad Men.

chamber4
Steven Anton Rehage and Mary MacDonald enjoy some of the nibbly things which were passed around the room.

chamber6
Richard Issa, Michelle Alvarez, Willie Vega, David Guzikowski; the staff, Jesse Royer, Rosy Quintero and Misael Castro made us all feel welcome at the Mayfair Lobby Bar.

chamber7
Miriam Trujillo, Carmen Principe, Judy Campo enjoyed the atmosphere, the drinks and I even spied them enjoying the $21.00 prix fixe three course dinner at the great table in the center of the bar.

Mad Men Mondays is each Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 at the Mayfair Lobby Bar. Drinks are $3.50, dinner is $21.00, it's a 1960s scene with the music and cocktails from that era. The tv show Mad Men is the theme. As Michelle Niemeyer puts it, "Where the men are mad and the women are the just plain crazy." It really is a lot of fun. See you next Monday!

Mad Men Mondays makes the world all right

mad-men1

After throwing my little hissy fit yesterday, I ended up at Mad Men Mondays at the Mayfair Hotel. (Say that three times fast).

I had a great time with lots of friends and I made some new friends, too.

Three of my favorite Village Council ladies were there, Liliana Dones, Michelle Niemeyer and Felice Dubin. All three are up for reelection on November 3, all three have my vote.
I hope they have yours, too.

Eighteen people have put in applications for the election it's up to us to vote nine in.

When I have the complete list, I'll post it here.

Anyway, about Mad Men Monday -- it's really a lot of fun. It's where everyone unwinds and mixes and mingles. You'll run into so many friends there. I'll be back next week, hope many of you can make it out, too.

One thing though -- they need to add Tom Collins to the special Mad Men menu. I have been pushing that on the Grapevine and it's not there. Many were drinking gin martini's, all they have to do is make the martini in a taller glass, hold the vermouth and add lots of club soda, the rest doesn't have to be done, I'll be happy with that (but an orange slice, cherry and sugar would make it a "real" Tom Collins).

I ran into two guys from the BID office as I left. We kissed and made up. All is well with the world agian. Man Men Mondays has that effect. Try it next week.

Mad Men gearing up for April return

There's talk of Mad Men's return date being in April.

Lili Dones and I were talking about bringing Mad Men Monday back when the show comes back on the air. Probably at the Mayfair Lobby again, at Spartico, if they'll have us.

We used to have good times at Mad Men Monday. Here's some photos and here are more.

Mad Men and lobster, why not?

It's Monday, which means it's Mad Men Monday night. Tonight at the Mayfair Lobby bar, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, enjoy cocktails from the 1960s, like Manhattans, Traditional Martinis and Tom Collins while enjoying the sounds of the era.

Mix and mingle with locals, out for a Monday Night Happy Hour in honor of Mad Men, the popular AMC tv show. You don't have to be a Mad Men fan, although it is playing on the tv in the background (you have to sit up close to hear it, so it won't disturb the vibe of chatting and mingling).

Slip in the side door of the Mayfair on Virginia Street and meet some new and old friends for a couple of hours of fun. Cocktails are $3.50, a three course dinner is available, too for only $21.00.

Or you can hop on over to Calamari (3540 Main Highway) afterwards for their special Monday Night Lobster Night -- get a 1-1/4 lb. lobster on a bed of linguini in a light, spicy tomato sauce for just $19.95.

Mondays just got good again

First the Woodstock Weekend and now another 1960s classic -- the Hotel Bar. The award winning AMC show, Mad Men, is back for it's third season, starting August 16 and starting August 17, you can join your fellow Mad Men enthusiasts for a roll back to the early 1960s at Mad Men Mondays @ Mayfair Hotel lobby bar..

From 5:30 to 7:30 each week, name your poison: Marini, Manhattan, Rob Roy, Old Fashioned, Tom Collins (love those), Harvey Wallbagner and Bloody Marys (just like the one Jane Draper serves Mom and Dad). Beer and wine are also on the menu. The drinks are $3.50.

The music will be 1960s originals and a modern take on the '60s classics. Sterling Cooper clips and episodes will be shown on the flat screen and if you would like dinner with yoiur drinks, order from the Mad Men Mondays Menu: 3 courses for $20.99.

So spread the word and go back in time each Monday at the Mayfair Hotel Lobby Bar (3000 Florida Avenue).
