King Mango Strut was one of the best!
Harry Emilio Gottlieb got all these great close up shots at yesterday's King Mango Strut. It was a hot day, but no one minded, the crowd was enthralled. It seems that everything was covered in the parody parade from Imus to the demise of the Orange Bowl. Of course politicians were all torn apart from both parties. "Evel Knievel" was even there doing stunts. Grand Marshals, Mimi Davila and Laura Di Lorenzo, the Chongalicious Girls (shown above), sang their way through the parade and then did a little concert at the end.
My actual parade photos are here.

Pizza, Pizza
It didn't take long for the Cozzoli's location on Main Highway to be reopened as Boardwalk Pizza Company. They did a booming business this past weekend. Let's hope they continue that. Makes no sense to have boarded up storefronts on Main Highway. Now about the old Tacos and Crepes location next door . . .

King Mango Madness today in the Grove
The Chongalicious Girls, were a hit at today's King Mango Strut. The parade started at 2 pm and went on past 4 pm. It was a wild one. If you click on the pictures here, they'll open larger.Strut Day goings on around the Grove
Cocowalk will be the place for the King Mango Strut After Party. The party starts right after the parade and runs until 9pm - it will kick-off with the Ike & Vals Band and the 18 Wheelers.
Presidente Beer, the official beer sponsor for the after party, will be featuring beer specials and offering giveaways. Also, family activities will be available like face painting, a bounce house and more.

There are other things going on at various restaurants and bars in the other areas of the Grove.
The Bookstore has an after Christmas sale, you can see the tables set up outside with some nice discounted items.
Shaq 24 Hour Fitness still has their specials until the end of the year. Give Marco a call at 786-343-4967, he'll hook you up.
Qdoba needs employees. They are scheduled to open January 14th. You can apply right on site and if they aren't there today, just pick up an application, they are inside an envelope taped to the door. Qdoba is a few doors down from the gym on Grand Avenue.

The season is winding down . . .
So as the holiday season winds down, I noticed my Christmas tree is still as fresh as a daisy, well, er, as fresh as the day it was cut down. I have to give credit to the Boys and Girls Club for the quality of their trees. I guess the St. Stephen's trees are just as nice.
Barnacle's Old Time Dance tonight

Changes in the Cocoanut Grove Village Council
Starting in January, the Village Council will meet the first Thursday of each month at 7 pm at City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive), it had been Tuesdays.
New chairman, Michelle Niemeyer, will start her duty then along with Martin Zilber, as vice chairman. Current chairman Gary Hecht will be stepping down.
Niemeyer was quoted as saying, "I have never felt the village council is about the chair at all. Everyone is elected or appointed and everyone ought to be heavily involved and part of things."
Not sure what Niemeyer is referring to. I found Gary Hecht to be very fair and low key. Guess she just means that is what the postion is
in general.

Holiday week in Coconut Grove
The week between Christmas and New Years is always such a nice time to spend in the Grove. The streets are packed, people are shopping and enjoying the restaurants. The weather has been great and everyone seems to want to be outside day and night.

The quiet streets in the morning, before the crowds show up, is my favorite time. You can grab a cup of coffee at The Bookstore or Starbucks and just stroll the streets before the afternoon masses arrive.

"Thirsty Thursday" at Jaguar tonight
The weekly tasting is in full swing. Tonight enjoy chilled wines, steak and chicken skewers plus ceviche served on ceramic spoons (see the Christmas tree) hosted by wine consultant Barry Alberts.
Thirsty Thursdays run from 7-9 pm (Thursdays of course). Cost: $15 at Jaguar-Ceviche Spoon Bar and Grill, 3067 Grand Avenue.
Ph: 305-444-0216.
Going green note: Jaguar is one of the first restaurants to do away with bottled water. They installed a new high-tech filtering system and they serve water at no charge in carafes. It actually tastes much better than bottled water.

Pets took over the Central Business District
"Santa Paws" was one of the theme's at Family Day at CocoWalk this past weekend. Here is Santa Claus with Cachilo. Many people brought their pets out to pose for pictures with Santa on the final weekend before Christmas.
Jason and Koda were part of the Paws4You/Cadillac promotion. Every time someone test drove a new car, Cadillac donated $10.00 to the Paws4You organization. More about them here: www.paws4you.org .

'Tis the season for crowds, music and fun
Music filled the Grove again yesterday, above is the Oscar Salas Quintet, who where at Jaguar, and the "Good Blend" Quartet below (Tom, Roberto, Chris and Mike) on Commodore Plaza -- heading for Greenstreets. The groups would move around the area singing and playing Christmas music while people shopped and ate. The Grove's BIC - Business Improvement Committee sponsored this.
I ran into Dave Collins again, head of BIC, he was really happy and proud of the results. I don't blame him, the Grove was filled with happy people from end to end. Even the old Borders Books location was being used by a guy selling Romero Britto lithographs, all of the colors really brightened up that area of Mayfair, so from Mary Street, up Grand Avenue, around to Main Highway, up to Cefalo's, the whole Central Business District was abuzz with a holiday feel.I said a quick hello to Sweetpea who was rushing off to get ready for the "Barnacle Under the Moonlight" event. And I ran into a lot of friends who I hadn't seen in awhile, too. If this momentum can keep going, I really see good things for the Grove. The next big thing will be the King Mango Strut next Sunday, where thousands of people will fill the streets.
I would love to see more movies in the park, but we do have Shakespeare in the Park to look forward to in January, also the Great Taste of the Grove and of course The Coconut Grove Arts Festival and St. Stephen's Crafts Fair in February. It's that season -- from Halloween through Spring, the Grove is the place to be.
Saverio Di Ricci great for last minute shopping
Karina and Marcelo from the Saverio Di Ricci store have many great Italian leather items from jackets to handbags to shoes. The store is located in CocoWalk right between Santa's house and Hibiscus Hill. This is a great place for last minute Christmas shoppers. You can be in and out and get quality gifts -- the same could be said for Hibiscus Hill and their great one-of-a-kind items.

Broke college kids at McDonald's
So I'm at McDonald's on McDonald Street (I love saying that). And a car full of college kids is in front of me, it looked like five kids.
The driver tells the girl at the window they want separate checks for five people and he starts ordering, "One McMuffin . . . " Like each one was gonna order one McMuffin each or something like that. I thought, "Oh boy, this is gonna take awhile."
Luckily the girl at the window told them that only two orders per car was the rule at the drive thru and if they wanted to order separately, they would have to go inside. So they went inside.
I had to laugh . . . to be a young, broke college kid again . . .
good times . . .

Sticker shock at The Bookstore

I had my Shaq attack today (went to the gym) and then I popped across the street to The Bookstore to get something quick to eat. I ended up with a small mocha and a smoked marlin wrap (I wanted tuna, but they only had the marlin). The bill came to $12.95 and I left a tip. WTF?
A bit high I think. I could have gotten lunch at the Cheesecake Factory for that. I think Starbucks only charges about $5.99 for their sandwiches.
I did have a nice experience at the Mayfair Farmer's Market. I didn't get the vendor's picture, but his name is Ricardo, here is his cart, above -- he was so nice and patient. I bought an extra Christmas gift for someone there and he went out of his way to find a box and and the proper presentation all for a little trinket. And the price was great. In fact, you should check out the fruits and vegetables at the one booth at the Mayfair Farmer's Market. The prices are incredible.Speaking of the Shaq Gym, Marco still has some special deals until the end of the year, so if you still want in, give him a call at 786-343-4967. Tell him Tom from the Grapevine sent you and I think he'll be extra special to you.
Artist at work at Cafe Tu Tu Tango
I found artist Jeffrey Passage doing his thing at Cafe Tu Tu Tango at CocoWalk last night. He's usually there every Friday night. I had to wait to speak to him because he was busy selling a piece to a tourist who appreciated the work, which is actually a great Grove/Miami souvenir. The tourist bought a picture of Scotty's Landing and then had Jeffrey show him on a map where Scotty's Landing actually is. I guess he liked the look of the place from the rendering and then wanted to check it out in person.
Jeffrey is the artist from New Orleans who is now making the Grove his new home. His art is on the post cards being sold at the Heart of the Grove Gallery. His website is here: http://www.passage-studio.com/.

Everyone's in the Grove today, everyone
The Central Business District (CBD) is a mess today. I think every car, truck and sight seeing bus decided to converge on the Grove today. Those DOT workers have Main Highway at a standstill, which is pushing traffic onto Grand Avenue, which is also at a standstill, mainly due to overflow traffic and delivery trucks.
I got lunch to go at Somoto, only to have it be ice cold by the time I got home. I did see something great though, Freddie the Fabulous Flamingo decided to return to his roost and is back where he belongs in front of CocoWalk.
Note to drivers: Avoid the CBD today, traffic is backed up from South Bayshore Drive, all up McFarlane to Main Highway and Grand Avenue. Park on the outskirts and walk in.

The old Publix Christmas commercial
On a lighter, note, back by popular demand, here's the old Publix Commercial from the 1980s.
Another Bad Apple in the Big Orange?
The Michelle Spence-Jones story sickens me.Most people involved are now claiming that none of this is true and that Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's Memo is bogus. I tend to side with Marc. I don't always agree with him, but I don't think he made this up. I also don't think CBS4 and The Miami Herald would be chasing the story if there was no smoke.
This being said . . .
It's sickening knowing that people are paid off for their votes as if it is just the cost of doing business. It's just business as usual in Miami. It's sickening that the crooked politicians would require a payoff and it is sickening that low life developers would even consider paying off politicians so they can screw over the citizens of the City and County -- their own neighbors.
They are cheaters. They cannot abide by the law or by honest votes for or against their projects, so they CHEAT their neighbors and friends and ruin the quality of life for everyone. They are GREEDY SLOBS.
No shame. The paid off commissioners are lower than low, so are the attorneys who jump through hoops for the almighty developers, but the developers are worse. How do these people face their families? Do they actually look their children in the eyes with a clear conscience? Are they proud of their conduct?
There's a place in hell for
I would publicly like to thank Commish Marc Sarnoff for his Memo. He restored my faith in his office. I am proud to have him as our District Commissioner. If it wasn't for this memo, this current scam may never have seen the light of day.

Was Comm. Spence-Jones paid for her votes?
Finally, the truth seems to be coming out. Is Michelle Spence-Jones a crook? Was she paid for her yes votes on the City Commission? Looks like it. Does this mean the Mercy-Related project won't happen because of this fraud? Comm. Marc Sarnoff's "secret memo" details the fraud. And Barbara Carey-Schuler should be ashamed of herself. I used to admire her.
From CBS 4 News:
"Spence-Jones wouldn't approve the controversial Coconut Grove project unless $150,000 was paid to her associates: Barbara Hardeman, a political strategist, and former Miami commissioner Barbara Carey-Schuler, who was a political mentor to Spence-Jones."
Whole story here. / Comm. Marc Sarnoff's Memo here.
Making the Grove more ugly
Main Highway traffic is all backed up today because DOT is installing some sort of traffic lights. At Main and Commodore Plaza and near Fuller Street they are either installing actual traffic lights or school cross walk signals.
Not needed. Waste of money. It just makes the Village ugly. As you enter from Cefalo's, the big silver bars just take away from the Grove village ambiance.
Cefalo's expands restaurant seating area
Looks like Cefalo's (3540 Main Highway) tightened the store up by condensing things. So you can still get their delicious deli items and pastries, but there is more room to sit down and enjoy the restaurant, inside and out.

I'm keeing it in the Grove
I finally got an opening date for Qdoba in the Grove. They told me January 14, 2008. A little less than a month away.
Good deal. I was going to my gym in Coral Gables and then hitting Qdoba on Miracle Mile afterwards. Now that I joined the Shaq 24 Hour gym, I can work out there and then just pop over to Qdoba, just a few doors away -- keeping my business in the Grove.

The Grove . . . Now and Then . . .

Dave at the "Miami Memories" blog has a great post about the "old Grove". It starts:
Funny, but what got me going on this riff was a Friday afternoon stopover to the Titanic Brewery by the University of Miami for a brew or two with my buddies the other day. It just hit me that this was the old Flick coffeehouse that I used to go to in the 60’s to see all the great musicians that lived in Coconut Grove back then. Back in the late 60’s I lived in a duplex apartment complex on Aviation Avenue in the Grove. It was owned by an old doll that had been a bit player in the movies back in the 20’s and 30’s and was a ringer for the Norma Desmond character in “Sunset Boulevard”. As with everyone else in the Grove she was a lovable eccentric.

Car wash blamed for credit card/identity thefts
U.S. 1's Finest Car Wash at Bird Road and US 1, right across from the entrance to the Grove, is also a great credit card fraud and identity theft operation.
Cory Mason, who helped operate the car wash after Tim Hardaway stepped out of the picture because of his anti-gay remarks, is now in a Broward County jail under fraud charges.
I use the car wash across the street on Bird and US 1 and the one across from CVS on Grand Avenue. They both do excellent jobs and are honest and reliable. More here.

"Court Watch" receives commendations
Last week Commendations to the members of the All-Grove Crime Watch "Court Watch" Committee were given at City Hall. This was in recognition of these members' dedication to fighting crime and reducing the "revolving door" of arrest and release of repeat offenders in our Grove community.
Court Watch members who received commendations included Neighborhood Resource Officer Tom Braga, Chair Robert Loupo, Kitty Harring, Sue McConnell, Sean Reichert, and Lee Marks.
As the result of this committee going to a recent hearing, sending letters to the Judge and working with the State Attorney's office, at the follow up hearing yesterday, one of the Grove's repeat offenders was given a six month lock down treatment and an additional six month probation after his release that the All Grove Crimewatch requested.

Found- little daschund in the Grove
This little dog was found Friday morning (Dec 14) in Lincoln Park (on Jackson Street). No tags. No chip. It is well taken care of so it must have good owners.Contact Bobby at 786-282-4210 to reunite her with her family. I guess Bobby will require some sort of proof like a photo or papers or something to prove ownership.
UPDATE: The little dog was safely returned to her owner.
Get out! It's the perfect day for it
Today, the weather is incredible. If you haven't been out, you should get out and enjoy it.From one end of the Grove to the next, people are out worshiping the perfect weather.
Some were enjoying coffee and lunch as they read or worked outside The Bookstore.
Some caught up with friends.
Others brought out all of their furry friends for a nice, quiet lunch.
And many enjoyed the outdoor dining, all over the Grove. Tomorrow, the weather is expected to be the same. I'll be out there again taking advantage of it.
If you click on the pictures, they will open to full size.
Where's Cozzoli's?
First Tacos and Crepes, or A&S Tacos, or whatever it was called went out of business -- now Cozzoli's -- a Grove institution -- right next door on Main Highway. I remember when Cozzoli's was just around the corner on McFarlane Road years ago. How many of us have stumbled in after a heavy night of partying for a quick slice? I loved their chicken parmigiana, too. I even once blogged about their home town friendliness.I know Channel 10 had them shut down once because of one of their "Dirty Dining" reports, but still. . .
Music could be heard throughout the Grove
This past weekend, holiday music could be heard throughout the Grove thanks to the Business Improvement Committee (BIC) who sponsored various bands. I ran into Dave Collins, head of BIC, who introduced me to Bobby Ingram, who coordinates the bands. Above is "Miami Mo" Morgen and Carlos Peluzza Del Carpio and below is the Oscar Salas Quintet. Thanks to BIC, there is Free Parking in the Grove during the holiday season, too. Free parking, free music . . . you can't beat that.

She heard it through the grapevine . . .
When I stopped by the St. Stephen's lot to see how the Christmas tree sale was going, I asked the lady there if they would be sold out by the end of today.
She said, "I heard through the grapevine that they would all be gone."
I smiled and handed her my Coconut Grove Grapevine card. She smiled. :)

I finally joined Shaq 24 Hour Fitness
I finally joined the Shaq 24 Hour Fitness gym because I finally ran into someone there who actually knows what customer service is all about.Marco Saucedo, shown here, was sitting out front this weekend, waiting to sign people up, so I approached him. I told him of how I tried to join so many times, but all their rules and pushiness kept me from signing up. He sat there, listened, apologized for the others and took me inside.
We went up to his desk, he showed me the plans available, he gave me a great deal and I am now a member. He made it painless. No tour, no hard sell, he treated me with respect.
He has some great rates and says that after January 1st, they will not be offering any incentives, so if you are in the market for a gym or were considering a gym membership as a holiday gift for someone, give Marco a call at 786-343-4967. Tell him Tom from the Grapevine sent you. He'll hook you up and he'll use respect.
Winter wonderland and some hot wings
I stopped in at the Loggerhead (2721 Bird Ave.) yesterday afternoon for my hot wings fix (and a burger). Rob and Terri, shown here, made it a pleasant visit, as usual. They always go all out with the decorations, it's like a winter wonderland when you enter and all throughout the place there are lights and decorations. They do a great job at Halloween, but Christmastime is the best. With this cold front coming through tonight, why not stop in for a drink or some wings. You'll really get the holiday feeling once you step in the door. (Don't let the Dolphins ruin if for you if you go at game time).

Gift wrapping for a cause
The volunteers for Kristi House were at CocoWalk today wrapping gifts for a donation. Very convenient. I never can wrap things so that they look nice. The girls did an excellent job.
You can't have anything nice - part 2
OK, first the Santa hat was stolen from the flamingo at CocoWalk, now the whole damn flamingo is gone! I passed by this afternoon and this was the scene. We are not amused.Property taxes subject of Town Hall meeting
Carlos Lopez-Cantera is hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday, December 18 to discuss property taxes.
This is a good opportunity for concerned residents to voice their opinions, suggestions and solutions regarding rising property taxes. Speaker Marco Rubio will be attending as a special guest. The meeting will be at Ransom Everglades Middle School, 2045 South Bayshore Drive, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

I paid it forward and also got a fajita
After that, with all the talk of the Sandbar Grill, I headed over there for one of their delicious fajitas. I'm all set now. :)
Where in the Grove winner
The winner of the Where in the Grove contest is Andrea, who lives on S. Bayshore Drive. The wooden mask is at the entrance of The Sandbar Grill at 3064 Grand Avenue. Try their delicious nachos and check out the beer specials. And rub the mask for luck the next time you enter The Sandbar.
Paying it foward today at The Bookstore
Yesterday, it started in Pompano Beach and then spread to Dade County -- people were buying coffee at Starbucks for the person behind them in drive thru lanes. It was all over the news. Shame that in this day and age that a random act of kindness makes the top story on the evening news. It should be so common that it wouldn't be a news story.
I propose to do that today at the new Bookstore in the Grove (3399 Grand Avenue). I am going in to get coffee and I'll pay for the person behind me and see if this spreads throughout the day.

Do we want Miami City Hall out of the Grove?

This letter to the editor, titled, "Do Miami a Favor, City Hall -- Get out of Coconut Grove," by Harry Emilio Gottlieb, appeared in the Sun-Post. I actually like having City Hall in the Grove. It seems convenient and we know where to buttonhole the Mayor and Commissioners and I find it easy to pop in on Commission meetings, too. How do others feel?
I do agree with Harry's comments on Stiltsville, first it is condemned and now revered.
There is a saying: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." That's why I like city hall close to where I live.
Here is Harry's letter:
What are the plans, if any, to move something into the soon-to-be-empty Miami Art and Miami Science museums?
What are the plans to move Miami City Hall to downtown where the attention of the mayor, commissioners and department managers are very much needed?
It is a little disingenuous for our City Hall to be located in one of our city’s most affluent neighborhoods, Coconut Grove. Let’s get the government closer to the problems that need fixing.
Perhaps City Hall can find a location closer to downtown. There will soon be empty museums and there are already lots of empty condos.
Then perhaps Coconut Grove can take back our historic Pan Am airport and turn it into a community center and/or restaurant like that of the Red Fish in Matheson Hammock.
It is also a bit ironic that we celebrate the noble Tequesta Indian with a statue on the river after we wipe them off the planet.
Now we are about to design a new Miami Art Museum that is honoring the history of Stiltsville, the unique historic community that our government wanted to totally demolish just a few years ago.

Was Michelle Spence-Jones paid for her vote?
According to The New Times, the state is studying whether City Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones was paid to vote in favor of the Mercy condo project sponsored by the Related Group, among other infractions. I honestly don't think she has ever stepped foot on the property and had no business voting on the project. She didn't seem to have a clue what she was doing on the dais the day of the vote and she stumbled over her words and made no sense at all. Let's see how this ends up. I was surprised she wasn't wearing one of the yellow shirts that day.
All comments naming or accusing others should have a name and email or they will not be published. This is for legal reasons. Thank you.

So is Christmas . . .
Coming soon. That's what they say at Akashi and Qdoba. Shame that they are dragging their feet at both locations, they would both be a welcome presence with all the Christmas shoppers in the Grove these days. Akashi has been "coming soon" since last February or March. I never see any movement at either location.
Chamber meeting was a success at Al Fresco
Yesterday, over 40 people, including Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, BIC Executive Director David Collins, George Neary, from GMCVB, a smattering of artists, Grove business leaders and Chamber board members, turned out to enjoy lunch al fresco, at Al Fresco, the newly-named restaurant at the Arts & Minds Center.
Guest Speaker Michael Spring, Director of Miami-Dade's Dept. of Cultural Affairs delivered a wonderful "State-of-the-Arts" address, enhanced by the a Jazz ensemble, a Christmas Chorale, and a promotional performance art piece by the talented students of the Arts & Minds Center.
Al Fresco is not open for lunch, as during the day it turns into a a lively school patio, but stop in any evening for a real treat - from fresh, Brick Oven baked bread and pizza (this one is gourmet and comes with a side of arugula), to more sophisticated fare -- carpacios, fresh pastas, etc. all rather reasonably priced. If the Alfresco atmosphere with music videos on the large screen is not for you, there are two inviting dining rooms. There is no reason why this should not become a favorite Grove restaurant. Al Fresco is located at 3138 Commodore Plaza.

Grove contest -- come back tomorrow to win
We are going to start having contests every once in awhile. Tomorrow we are going to post a Grove question. Everyone is welcome to answer the question using a form we have set up (we'll post that link to the form tomorrow). We will randomly select the winner, this way you don't have to try to be the first one and you can answer at your leisure. (One entry per person).
The winner will win various things. The first contest will be a t-shirt from our 33133 line. We also plan to have other prizes in the future like pet sitting provided by Jorge, or maybe a gift from one of our Grove businesses, hopefully a coupon or maybe free food, maybe a free display ad in this blog, things like that.
Check back some time tomorrow for the question.

Christmas tree spoons
You may have noticed the Christmas tree right inside the entrance of Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar (3067 Grand Avenue). If you look closer, you'll see the ornaments are ceviche spoons.
While you're waiting for your meal, they may ask you to decorate a spoon or two, then they will put the spoons on the tree.
Sergio, one of the managers, told me that they plan to sell the spoons after the holidays and give the money to charity. They aren't sure which charity yet. Maybe the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. You'll remember they held the Jaguar Challenge last month for that.

Plenty of sparkling going on at Cocowalk
Sparkle Plenty is a great South Florida tradition. You may remember the store from back in the day, when it was south of here. Now it's right at Cocowalk, right up front, you can't miss it.
There are some very quirky items here that would make nice holiday gifts. They have Webkinz, Troll beads and a great selection of greeting cards. You can walk in any day and see customers laughing over the unique selection of cards.
Their Christmas ornaments really do sparkle plenty, you can check 'em out at CocoWalk, right across from Hibiscus Hill. Their phone number is 305-447-3343. Chamber luncheon this Wednesday

Brushing up on pets
Here's the Grove's ace pet-sitter, Jorge Fernandez. I caught him at Bookstore in the Grove, checking out the pet books and stuffed animals. Jorge not only pet sits and dog walks in the Grove, but you'll catch him in Coral Gables, the Roads, Brickell, South Miami and even Kendall. He can be reached at 305-528-0874. You can email him at: Jorgepetsitter@aol.comIf you need a pet sitter or walker for the holidays, now is the time to call. He has great references and animals love him.

Somoto in the Grove
I am always running to Coral Gables or South Miami for my favorite soup -- Tom Yum Kai -- not just because it's names after me (Tom), but because I love it.
Now I see I can get my favorite soup right here at Somoto, the Japanese, Thai and sushi bar restaurant at 3190 Commodore Plaza. They have everything from traditional Pad Thai to Curry, Teriyaki, Tempura and so on.
They have daily lunch specials and are also open for dinner. Their website is here: www.somotococonugrove.com .
I'm excited about all the new places opening in the Grove. Let's support them.
Wonderful night in Peacock Park
Last night I think I went back in time. I felt like I was back in the days of Wally and Beaver Cleaver and Donna Reed. That is how it felt in Peacock Park for the showing of "It's a Wonderful Life." It was so quaint and homey. The weather was perfect -- breezy and comfortable -- and the fake snow they were blowing through the crowd really put people in the holiday mood.
There were people of all ages with their lawn chairs and blankets. They brought picnic baskets and pizza and enjoyed the hot dogs, sno cones and popcorn that were available at the park and it was such a nice setting on a nice night.
Before the movie started, singers from the Shakespeare in the Park group, dressed as the Andrews Sisters, sang a few songs. They were promoting the January "Much Ado About Nothing" event, which will also be in Peacock Park. Then promptly at 8:00 pm, the movie started. The park lights were shut off on cue and up came the colorized version of Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life."
People were quiet and well behaved and really enjoyed themselves. You could see the huge movie screen from way across McFarlane Road and you could actually hear the movie as far away as Johnny Rockets, although it was not overly loud, but just a nice background soundtrack to the shoppers in the downtown area.
I really enjoyed the whole experience and the Fresh Air Flicks is really a great idea for the area. Peacock Park is the perfect setting. Although it looks sparse in the photos here, I think there were 1000 people or more. It was a really nice neighborly crowd. I look forward to the
next event.

Grove note cards available at Heart of the Grove
The Heart of the Grove has an exciting new gift item -- note cards with images of Grove locales. These images were done by GroveHouse Artists Cooperative member Jeffrey Passage who is also a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He generously donated the rights to reproduce the images to the church (prints are available for purchase in the Gallery) and is already working on more images around the Grove and Miami.A boxed set of eight cards (two of each image) and envelopes is $13.00 or, if you buy three or more, only $10.00 a box. Original artwork, prints, cards and other gift items are also available at the Gallery (3439 Main Highway). These would make great stocking stuffers. I bought three boxes.

For more info, please call the Barnacle direct at: 305-442-6866.There are various groups in Kennedy Park over the weekend, there don't seem to be any set times for these and they may just be offshoots of various gyms or clubs in the area. Best bet would be to stop by and ask the instructors at the time.
Etiquette for the holidays
The Ritz-Carlton (2700 Tigertail Avenue) has an etiquette class on Saturday for children ages 6 to 12. A four course meal is included in the two hour class. The cost is $58.00 plus taxand tip.

I just drove by CocoWalk and noticed that someone already stole the Santa hat off the flamingo out front. I knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of time. You can sort of see it in the name plate photo above.
Bastards.
Bastards.
Another shaq attack
My membership at my current gym is up at the end of the month, so I tried again to join Shaq 24 Hour Fitness in the Grove and again I was turned away. They refused to give me their rates without me first giving them my name, address and phone number and then taking a tour of the place. So again, I walked out. Three years in a row.
I wish the BIC would speak with them. Do they want members or is this a front for something?
One of my neighbors gave me a free pass to Equinox at The Village of Merrick Park, I may try that out this week and if I like it, I may join there.

Terri's back at the Loggerhead
Got a call today from my friend Terri Weisberg. She's back at the Loggerhead (Flanagans's) in the Grove full time. She had been down at the Pinecrest location for a year or so, but it's so great to have her back here.As you know, Terri has won the honor of "Bartender of the Year" more than once in the New Times poll.
To me she is the Loggerhead. The place wasn't the same without her. If you pop in, tell her Tom from The Grapevine sent you.
The Loggerhead is at 2721 Bird Avenue.
A visit to "the Hill"
I visited "the hill" -- Hibiscus Hill at CocoWalk, Sweetpea's elegant store. That's Sweetpea above, I'm sure many of you know her from around town. The store at 2911 Grand Avenue, in CocoWalk has such nice one-of-a-kind items for the holidays.
They are open from 10 am to 10 pm, Sunday thru Thursday and 10 am to midnight on Friday and Saturday. The Streets of Mayfair store is open from 11 am to 7 pm.
If you're looking for some elegant holiday gifts. This is the place. Hibiscus Hill also accepts the Code 33 Card. If you do not have a card, please contact Sue McConnell for one.Hibiscus Hill's phone number is 305-441-0400 and email is hibiscushill@hotmail.

New bookstore is the place to be

I stopped inside the new Bookstore in the Grove this weekend (3399 Grand Avenue). There was quite a nice crowd -- there were people at the snack bar and many people comfortably working on their laptops. Most were shopping for books and Christmas presents.
It's really a very inviting place and there seems to be a little nook and cranny for anyone trying to find something. The kids were really enjoying the children's department. A man on a guitar was playing nice, relaxing music.
Even if you aren't in the mood for a book, the snack bar is a great alternative to Starbucks, the pastries are delicious.
They had a lot of holiday books right at the entrance. I think the bookstore is really going to be a very welcome neighbor. Let's all do some holiday shopping there as a way of welcoming them to town. It's the perfect season for shopping and book giving.

What's with the anti Sarnoff rally?
Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's swearing in ceremony is tonight at City Hall. According to many comments left on this post, there is going to be an "anti-Sarnoff rally".
I don't know if that is a joke or not, but perhaps those who feel the need to humiliate the guy should consider running against him rather than wasting everyone's time with an "anti rally." Why not put your asses where your mouths are and put your names on the ballot next time?
Reminds me of my neighbor who bitches and bitches to me daily about stupid condo crap, yet she refuses to get on the condo board, even though there is an empty seat just waiting for her fat ass.
When Mother Teresa was asked to join an anti war rally she responded, "No thank you. But if you should ever have a pro peace rally, I'll be there."
Nuff said. Stop the whining people. Grow up.

Hiking through The Grove
The Boy Scouts were passing through The Grove again in droves yesterday on one of their long hikes. It was a perfect weekend for a hike. It's a shame they had to pass right through the center of town, with so much going on, they probably didn't want to keep hiking, I bet they wanted to hang around.

Santa came to town today
Santa arrived right on time at CocoWalk today, but before that, he took a trip around the Grove in a City of Miami firetruck. There were smiles on everyone's faces when they saw it wasn't an emergency but just Santa, making is arrival in style.
It was a perfect day, it seemed like everyone was out, the little ones got their faces painted and even got to try on the fire equipment.
CocoWalk had all sorts of games and fun things to do. Christmas songs were blaring out into the street, it was a very festive holiday atmosphere.
There was something going on all over the Grove. All you could see were happy faces from the new bookstore to every restaurant.
Santa will be at CocoWalk every weekend through Christmas.Chamber Christmas Party
