Changes in the Cocoanut Grove Village Council
New chairman, Michelle Niemeyer, will start her duty then along with Martin Zilber, as vice chairman. Current chairman Gary Hecht will be stepping down.
Niemeyer was quoted as saying, "I have never felt the village council is about the chair at all. Everyone is elected or appointed and everyone ought to be heavily involved and part of things."
Not sure what Niemeyer is referring to. I found Gary Hecht to be very fair and low key. Guess she just means that is what the postion is
in general.

Yeah I couldn't figure out what she was saying either and thought that was an odd comment to make like maybe she didn't like the previous Chairs...... but why would you say that at all when you are just being interviewed on your taking over.???
I think her statement is very clear.... it's about everyone.... not just the chair. It has nothing to do with anything else but that - a simple statement.

I am honored to have succeeded Commissioner Sarnoff as the Chair of the 2007 Village Council and welcome Michelle Niemeyer's leadership and guidance, what I define the roles of Chair to be. The 2007 Council's accomplishments resulted from the tireless commitments of its members to our community, exemplified by the bi-annual newsletter to the community I initiated. It's never been about the Chairman. Happy New Year and thank you to everyone in Coconut Grove who gave of themselves to preserve our wonderful way of life here.

Response to Bill Anderson - none of the previous chairs in my opinion ever made it about thenselves...which makes it an odd comment to make. We have had some great Chairs, someone named Suzanne, Kathleen Morris, Robert Krulik, Marc Sarnoff, and Gary Hecht and not one of them in my opinion made it about themselves.. the other members wouldn't let you because they all want to be heard and rightfully so. For a very long time under their By-laws Marc Sarnoff couldn't even vote until they changed that. Some people thought he voted for the Mercy project, but he never did because he couldn't, the Council voted for it.
