The new Grove bike rack dedication is today

lebo
As this story is being posted, the actual bike rack ceremony is taking place in Peacock Park. I'll report back on that tomorrow.

Here you can see artist Lebo working on the cement block part of the rack last Thursday. The actual metal parts were added and the whole thing is usable today.

Many of you like to bitch and moan about the biking situation in the Grove and in all of Miami, for that matter. Yet all you do is bitch and moan. How about doing something? I don't see any of you at any Village Council meetings or BID meetings or merchant meetings talking about the subject. Or how about starting up your own meeting?

There is a committee for every little thing these days it seems. I don't see any biker's rights meetings or bike path meetings, etc. Why not start one? Maybe Danny at Revolution Bicycle Services (3444 Main Highway) will offer up his place for your inaugural meeting. How about doing something other than bitching?

"Good afternoon,

It was good meeting you all today, at the Grove Bike event, Peacock Park, Mr. Diaz and Mr. Worth, and all.

Collin suggested we might address some of our concerns to you, and other officials, regarding the lamentable biking/running lack of facilities in our City, especially here at our Cocoanut Grove Village.

The Bike Rack Art event was great today. Numerous Grove activists were there, another beautiful Saturday evening, snacks and all.
A start is a start. Bike day, and all these new movements are very encouraging. For all of us, who like to step out of our cars once in a while.

But the main point I was trying to convey to Collin, Michelle, Grape Tom and many others is rather simple:

Bike racks are nice, especially this one. Promoting awareness of the modern bike movement is great too. We are light years behind Europe and other Cities in the US. Third worst in the nation, when it come to being bike friendly, or runner friendly really, by all accounts.

The intention here is not just to complain, but to help at effecting some real change. Actual progress.

Bike racks are nice and dandy. But that's not the ISSUE, at all.

Bike lanes, even paint, even roads, smooth pavement, signs, education for drivers and bikers.
That's the REAL issue here, not a couple pretty artsy bike racks.

Repave South Bayshore drive, paint it, smooth it out. Put signs on it, for bikers/cars/ alike.

Tiger Tail is also a veritable Mine Field. Main Hwy, doublass, what A MESS.

Please hop on a race bike, or run from Peacock Park to the toll plaza one day.

Again, the idea here is not just criticize. We are delighted are your new efforts regarding these issues.

But Bike racks? Bike LANES is the real issue. Even mountain bike people or leisure bikes are at a very high RISK riding on these pathetic streets full of holes and debris.
I sure hope it doesn't take many more serious accidents for our political representatives to take action and Fix the Roads: Paint, smooth ride, asphalt, signs.

Bike racks.. sure!
Best regards
Not oo many of us really need them, but they do look good, especially this one.

Someone PLEASE make sure that whatever beautiful items come in are MAINTAINED & REPAIRED in the future in a professional manner. I am hoping that this rack will get some kind of sealant or something? Of course it will get dirty, but will it get the TLC it will need later? Items that look 'neglected' are just plain depressing.
