Many merchants feel that the Grove is ugly
I had thought that myself. When I tried to get a decent holiday display, there was none around. That's why I had those four mugs pose for me at the top there. But at night, the Grove does come alive. Is it ugly in the day though?
Sandy, from The Bookstore, was adamant about the ugliness of the Grove this holiday season. Felice, from The Bookstore was quite upset over the scaffolding being used to renovate Crazy Pianos. Remember they did have to deal with scaffolding, which seemed like a year, during the pool renovation at the Mayfair House.
Crazy Pianos did ask for a street closure for a few days, but that was denied. The scaffolding will be up until after the holidays unfortunately.
Someone at the meeting said that it is ironic that code enforcement is so concerned with tables being on the sidewalks blocking pedestrians, but they say nothing about the scaffolding which blocks that sidewalk in bad and ugly way.
Comm. Marc Sarnoff says that new lighting is in the works and also new planters which will go throughout the Grove. (Ironically planters were a major issue at the restaurants). Elliot from Red Kiwi wanted to know when it will be done. No one could give him a date. That bothered him, but he's quite new in town, he doesn't know how slow things move around here.

Tells a lot about the motives and the driving force behind code enforcement. Cocowalk is the bulldog in town so they do not dare look their way. If any other business had anything close to one tenth of that scaffolding on their building, they would have been shut down. I guess it is good to be Cocowalk or part of a wolf pack.
What's with the ladder that is constantly up on that salon at the corner of Grand and Fuller - it is like a fixture on that place - they have been moving it around for months. Hey maybe they are putting a pool on top of the building and making into a club like Mayfair did.
The scaffolding might not be the nicest thing around, but it's a sign of entrepreneurship, something which has been lacking in the last months. No one wants to see the scaffolding, but I would rather put up with it, rather than see empty stores. And I go through it everyday on my way to work. I don't know if the Crazy Pianos owner is doing this out of faith in the future, or just because he already has a huge sunken cost, but the truth is we need more of it.
Huh?
People are concerned with the appearance of Coconut Grove?
Wait a minute. Have they seen the historic Coconut Grove Playhouse or driven on 27th Avenue lately? There is much to be desired.
(As for me, I have actually been caught cleaning up graffiti. People think I'm weird.)
Cleaning up graffiti is laudable. Tony, you ARE weird, however.
(I say that with laughter and appreciation.)
Bob
I covered over graffiti in my neighborhood. Then the graffiti "artist" ie a tagger, called me and threatened me. I hate graffiti. It was really gang like and really ugly. Can't I cover it over asap?
(By the way, the graffiti was on someone else's building but it was facing me. And it was ugly.)
Bob is right on both counts.
We need more graffiti cleaners. Actually, oven cleaner works well if you don't have any paint remover.
