It's beginning to look a lot like . . . crap . . .
Quite a few of the merchants are upset over the scaffolding at CocoWalk. They want to know why, at the busiest shopping month of the year and during Art Basel week, was this allowed to be constructed on Grand Avenue. It's a mess.
It's there for the work crews renovating the old Tu Tu Tango, where Crazy Pianos plans to open in January. I didn't think much about it at first, but it is sort of a bad idea to do this right around the holidays. Many want it removed now. Shoppers are finding it very ugly and inconvenient.

Ugly and inconvenient? What about the ticket police. Saturday morning shopping day you could have brought a double wide though these streets. The police were parked out front with an I dare you to just stop for even a minute to unload and it took just that to write all the tickets of those who made that mistake. The sign reads tour bus underneath loading zone. With a business district that depends on deliveries I thought it was both a tour bus stop as well as a loading zone. NO
not so.
That is horrendous. Every time we take one step forward, we take two steps back. There are about 9 spots for loading zones and then there are those damn cabs that take up not only their 2 allotted spaces by the Mayfair but then they take up other parking spaces and don't put money in the meter or they doublepark and you can't get by them. Can't they be moved somewhere else so we can park and eat and shop in the Grove?
Sometimes stuff like this is needed to improve the area. I'm actually looking forward to the piano bar where Tu Tu used to be. Obviously this work is needed to create new business and not being done just to annoy you.. Let them do their work and let us wait and see what the Grove has next for us! Please report on something of substance
obliged
I am one of the merchants who asked Tom to bring up the subject. We feel this is "something of substance."
Its a little much to complain about a business trying to finish construction in order to open up in January. Yes, it is not ideal during the holidays but are they supposed to delay their opening and continue to lose money just because Santa is in town? Merchants should be happy that a business has agreed to set up shop in the former Cafe Tu Tu Tango space rather than having Cocowalk continue to look like a graveyard of failed businesses.
The simple fact of the matter is that there are always 2 ways to look at things - a positive way and a negative way. I walk by Cocowalk almost daily and this doesnt strike me as a negative. Most Grovites, unfortunately, love to take the negative route and complain.
As for the parking/loading zones... There is plenty of parking in the Grove, a point Ive brought up for years. Its just that people are too lazy to walk a block or 2. If taxis are in a parking/loading zone sitting idle, ask them to move and they should. Its too bad that police officers are not feeling the holiday love in a small town like the Grove where business owners really should know the officers on a first name basis.
This month is not the time for this, they have been working on the piano place for months now, poor planning and scheduling for this.
Keep bitching, Anon. I hope it makes you feel better. Im sure the people at Crazy Pianos thought to themselves, "Boy, lets try to plan construction during the holidays so it will look crappy! Why would we want to finish before then and reap the benefits of holiday shopping?"
Give it up already.
