It's beginning to hit the fan

The Miami Herald and Channel 4 News have both run stories on Loft One, developed by The Related Group, where city and county employees were practically given units, which were flipped for high profits. It appears these sweet deals were given in exchange for votes and money in the name of "affordable housing".

I guess when Commissioner Gonzalez dared people to follow the money, the Herald and Channel 4 took him up on that.

Subject: RE: It is time for Commissioner Gonzalez to apologize to Indians for his insenstive remark about Indians.

Commissioner was not insulting Indians. That was never his intent. What he was attacking was the belief of certain individuals in this community that Hispanics because they speak with an accent, or individuals whose color is darker are for some reason to be considered inferior to them. And since they are inferior if they where to disagree with the almighty as he called them is because they are stupid or have accepted some trinket for their support. You know that he was specifically referring to a very particular insulting e-mail that you have direct knowledge of.

Mr. Castaneda:

Here is a copy of the e-mail that I sent to all City of Miami Commissioners, and not just Commissioner Gonzalez on April 24, 2007:

Commissioners

The enclosed letter to the Coconut Grove Grapevine blog implies that some members of the City of Miami Commissioners may have sold their vote in reference to an affirmative vote on the upcoming zoning change for Mercy Hospital. Do you have any comments?

Thank you,

Commissioner Gonzalez may have found the article in the blog insulting but why would a paid elected official find an e-mail asking for his comments on that article particularly insulting? Not one of the Commissioners, including Commissioner Gonzalez took the time to comment on the article but then Commissioner Gonzalez used his position as Chairman of the City of Miami Commission to comment not on the e-mail but on the article itself. In my opinion not the most dignified use of that position. Perhaps on the campaign trail, but not from the high table of City of Miami Commission.

Perhaps you think the Commissioner was not insulting Indians, but when he says from the high table of the City of Miami Commission, 'We Hispanics are not Indians', he is not only insulting Hispanics, he is insulting Indians and they deserve a public apology from the Commissioner. The remark was insensitive.

Again do not forget the quote Mayor Xavier Suarez used at his inauguration, "On the tree of humanity, there are many leaves and flowers, but our trunk will always be indigenous".

Thank you,
Brent Cutler

Grapevine, you seem to be up to date on all this. Maybe its time we bring in the big guns (AKA the feds). They clearly are already on to some of the bs in south florida(HUD taking over our housing department). I mean seriously, if we truely believe something wrong is going on, we have no way of investigating it on our own, who do you contact about this. Id say the justice deparment but they all seem pretty busy at the moment lol. Maybe we should post some stuff on the FBIs tip page on their website. Im serious someone needs to come in and hold these people accountable.

I agree with Anon above. This is the most corrupt city government Ive ever seen and Ive spent a decent amount of time in other cities. Well, maybe there is corruption everywhere, but corruption + incompetance is prevalent here...

Does the term "Third World Country" ring a bell? Go Tancredo. You have my vote.

So many posters here appear to be the spiritual descendents of the mean-spirited, nativist malcontents who, in the early 1980’s, tried to prohibit the County government from translating public documents into languages other than English because they were traumatized by diversity.
That band of bigots was eventually crushed at the ballot box, pulverized in the court of public opinion and fled north, first to Broward and Palm Beach, and eventually to Ocala and out of the state.
The good news was: everyone was happy!!
The bigots were happy because they gravitated to places where they could better enjoy each other’s blindingly lily-white company and reminisce about the Glory Days of Anglo supremacy.
And we who stayed – Anglo, Black and Hispanic - were really happy to be freed of their joyless presence.
Today it seems that the remaining bigoted rif-raf that didn’t flee to Gringolandia has coagulated in Coconut Grove.
Here it simmers in idiocy, resentment and simpering self-righteousness as evidenced by many of the postings on this blog.
Eventually they will all choke on their own bile.
Couldn’t happen fast enough for the rest of us……

Its honestly pretty funny how hopeless the majority of the Miami population feels when it comes to city politics. It doesnt seem like there is anything that can be done other than to visit blogs like this and get on our soapboxes. Sure, you can write the Commissioners and pretty much everyone else in the country, but that does little if anything. Youve got better chances to win the lottery...

For what it's worth, Brent Cutler has a richly deserved reputation for sending emails to just about everyone on just about any subject. One could easily assume that he is less concerned about the issue du jour than the possibility of getting someone, anyone actually, to respond to his incessant missives. More than one well-intentioned party has suggested that he back off, obviously to no avail.

AND WHY SHOULD HE "BACK OFF"?

IN THESE FATFUL TIMES - THERE IS NO ROOM FOR APATHY.

Many people who receive Brent's missives are busy with real lives doing real work...
