Change of venue for Carollton meeting

Coconut Grove neighbors who have expressed interest in participating in open discussion on Carrollton’s proposed boys school  grades Pre K through 5.

The meeting, previously scheduled for the Coral Reef Yacht Club has been moved to Hotel Aria (the former Sonesta).

Carrollton has plans for a 350 student/50 faculty new school at the location where Villa Woodbine has operated as an event venue for the last 40 years at 2167 S. Bayshore Drive.

Please join  the discussion Monday, April 15 from 5:00 to 6:30, when committee members will be assigned for a covered community event, hopefully held before schools in the Grove start their summer break that commences Friday May 31.

The Aria Hotel is at 2889 McFarlane Road.

Please RSVP via text to 305-431-0336 or 305-785-8013.

Tom, I guess when you posted the venue change, you took down the old post and comments, some of which seemed very "No More Traffic In Our Residential Neighborhood!"
I wonder how many of the NIMBY people who will oppose a new school on S Bayshore are also involved in designing, building, selling, leasing, or renting the new high rise condos and offices in the Grove. Ummm, you think that might also add to traffic on S. Bayshore?
And if you're going to add residential, at some point you have to add schools.
If you're a realtor or contractor, or even an architect or decorator working on any of these projects, don't come to this meeting and complain about more traffic because of a new school.

The venom of neighbors never ceases to amaze me. Solutions are needed, not garbage comments like the above. Bruce, is your intention to bully people who don’t share your views? I can’t think of any other reason for the tone of your comment. We ALL live in this community and I think we are ALL looking for the best way to accommodate each other’s lifestyles. But starting the conversation with your panties bunched in a wad serves no purpose.

@ Bruce
You have a point, however. How many schools do you need for a population of 30,000 ???
Coconut Grove Elementary,
Carver Middle School
Tucker Elementary
Coconut Grove Montessori,
St. Stephen's
Ransom Middle School
Ransom High School
Carrolton
St Hugh
La Salle
Plymouth Pre-school
Vanguard

Did I forget any?? Probably.

Additional private schools bring in traffic from other areas. Have you tried using Tigertail when Ransom lets out? Or Main when Ransom and Carrolton let out? Please.

And by the way, I bet you that folks with school age kids cannot afford to buy at Park Grove or the Twisted Sisters.

Please rethink your opinion.

Wow, I didnt intend any "venom". I just said dont bitch about a new school if you are one of those benefitting in any way from the development.
If you are against all development, OK. You have a reasonable position.
If you are selling whatever to the new high rises, dont whine about S Bayshore or Tigertail traffic.

Agreed with Bruce, some "activists" play both sides.

In reference to Bruce above, um yeah., That's how democracy works. You voice your opinion (or vote) and someone else voices their opinion (or votes). And at the end of the day you tally the votes...

I'm in agreement with anonymous. I have 3 kids 17, 16 and 8. There are plenty of schools. Geographically this area has no access to the east and only 1 main road.

And to the concerns about "more good schools" I would add that it has been announced that the creme de la creme in privatye shools is taking over the old Archbishop Curly property in Little Haiti. It's an enormous facility (15 acres) with baseball and football fields, and a 15 minute drive from the Grove as I go there daily.

How many well heeled parents have paid millions to get their children into schools, facing fines and prisons? Schools attract home buyers and developers who talk the same language in this instance also resulting in gentrification. These children will soon be paying your social security. Relax, the traffic is just part of the F.I.A.T, Latin for "Let It Be Done". Jobie Steppe
