Tree cutting has been halted for now

Neighbors have been giving Commissioner Ken Russell an earful about the trees being removed on Grand Avenue.  The main issue is that the trees were not marked for removal, as they should be and the public did not have a chance to voice their concerns at community meetings.  People read the Grapevine story about the sudden hacking of  the trees and the open letter from TreeWatch, and then readers sent emails to the Commissioner to ask "why?"

Ken has now asked for the administration to halt the two projects on Grand Avenue and Bird Avenue. Ken says, "Until we can assess the viability and potential to preserve or relocate any of the trees slated for removal. I have also been walking and inspecting each of the trees as well. Several of the ones I saw truly do have visible rot in the trunk from the base to the top and are leaning over the road. There is not much we can do for these.  There are others however, which we will do our best to save or relocate."

Ken is also going through the notification process to make sure that all proper notification was posted for these removals. "If the process was not followed, the projects will not continue until proper public  notification and input have been followed and considered," he said.

Any mitigation replacement trees will be of the most mature state possible.

Hopefully, through this action we can manage to save some of the trees that were slated for removal. And we can be given a chance to weigh in on the size and girth of replacement trees, as well as having a say about the trees along Main Highway. It should be noted that Treewatch did not receive a heads up on an intended decision for several trees in the public right of at 3480 Main Highway posted on June 19, 2017:

Tree(s) to be removed: ONE (1) MANGO [ADJACENT YARD]
ROW Tree(s) to be removed: THREE (3) | ONE (1) LIVE OAK, ONE (1) MAHOGANY, ONE (1) TABEBUIA
Tree(s) to be relocated: NONE

Silva cells are so expensive they take too much out of the budget and we end up with less trees. Is there an alternative solution to expensive Silva cells?

More of the city's BS. It's so obvious that not all those trees have to be removed. Thanks to all the neighbors who have made their concerns known.

The city has a tree trust with lots of money in it. If silva cells are an option, it should be explored.

Silva Cell system is a good thing. It is expensive $7500.00 per tree because there is only on company that holds the patent. It basically looks like a bunch of milk crates that guide the root system of newly planted trees down, away from sidewalks so the trees thrive and the sidewalks don't buckle. What we don't want to happen is for the City to cut down more trees than necessary just so they can plant new trees. -- Liliana Dones, TreeWatch

How about FPL hacking away trees to their hearts content! lock at the hacked trees on Day Ave, between Mary Street and Virginia ave. If an owner did that, there would be hell to pay! Shameful!
