Founding women of the Grove featured on bike tour

The Founding Mother's Of Coconut Grove is the subject of this Saturday's free Historic Bike Tour. Explore the South Grove and get to know a varied, sometimes offbeat cast of women who devoted their lives to the community's well-being. Hear the endeavors of rugged pioneer and first school teacher Flora McFarlane. Discover the odyssey Eleuthera Islander Mariah Brown, among the very first Bahamian settlers in The Grove, faced as she left for an unfamiliar land. Follow the battles of fervent civil-rights activists Elizabeth Virrick and Alice Wainwright.

They'll stop by the quaint home of Marjory Stoneman Douglas where you'll learn how her eloquence and determination alerted a nation about the plight of the Florida Everglades. Throughout the tour, view the early summer flowering trees and plants that cover the neighborhood in a brilliant tapestry of color.

The bike tour starts at 9:30 on Saturday, May 21, meet in front of City Hall (3500 Pan American Drive).
