BioBlitz is a hit with local students

Vizcaya has been showing off its wild side by sharing their biodiversity through BioBlitz, sponsored by National Geographic. It's where curious “citizen scientists” gather to count as many plants, animals, and other organisms as possible in 24 hours. Last week, students from Shenandoah Middle School explored the area and observed and collecting data. It was in celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the National Park Service and also Vizcaya's own centennial year.

In the early morning hours, Vizcaya is full of activity—birds. Scientist and birder Dr. John Withey gave the students an opportunity to explore the estate before they opened for the day, when the local birds are most active.

The event at Vizcaya gathered local scientists from institutions throughout Miami, such as CARTHE Research and The University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. Stations were set up throughout the property to teach the students about the various local habitats and the animals that reside therein through hands-on activities.
Stations included: Birds and Butterflies, Reptiles, Marine Life, and Bugs.

In a special activity led by CARTHE Research, students were instructed to toss painted coconuts into Biscayne Bay, which would then allow scientists to track how the currents move trash and debris throughout the bay.
