Where are the bikes?
The racks take up parking spaces in some locations, but hopefully the bikes will compensate for the cars. There was a rack on Matilda in front of the elementary school, but the school needed the street parking more than they wanted the bikes so the racks were taken out in that location.
One more location was to be placed in Coconut Grove, giving us six locations, counting Vizcaya, but proponents for parking spaces fought that. Now the Bike Coconut Grove group has formed a petition to get the two other bike racks. I'm not sure what the Grove is going to do with six racks, but they feel they are needed. I can understand why people would fight the racks due to the fact that they were taking up parking which seems to be less and less these days around here. Just a few years ago the problem near The Grove Spot was taxis taking up all the spaces while they waited for fares from the Mayfair Hotel, but those taxis could easily be moved, the bike racks, of course, are permanent. Here's the petition.
Bike Coconut Grove runs the free valet service at the Thursday green market which will be back in January. I guess if you want more info on this you can talk to Hank and his crew there. I'm thinking the solution would be to wait and see how the three racks in Center Grove go. Will the bikes be used or just sit there? Let's hope they are used.

This is good news. I am wondering who is responsible, because they deserve some credit.
Could this be a long play for developing an argument by those who would profit by building another big parking garage somewhere? Because otherwise it's looking more & more like the Grove does not welcome those from outside the 33133 coming to our hood to park their cars & spend their money. I guess they could take a trolley here from the homes in Kendall & then they can rent bicycles for their families to cruise around.?
why do we need so many bikes here in the grove.we dont even have customers for the stores.and all the locals have there own bikes.i wonder who got paid for this stupid idea.curruption is killing the grove.so sad
For this to work, you obviously need Tourism to work.
Considering the delightful bumper-to-bumper traffic we now have, it's relatively safe to assume that every resident Grovite already owns a bike. Unless, of course, they are irrepressible fat old drivers of contaminant SUV's.
So what we need, again, are more CVS's, McDonalds, a lovely KFC, and the biggest Walmart is South FL. And destroy any unique, classic Grove places still standing. That's how you bring the Tourists, who in turn are happy to rent those lovely blue bikes.
The stand in front of 24hr fitness in your pic is on the sidewalk, which makes sense.
I wish there was one near fresh market and another by milams.
I think it's a great idea for all of us boaters that live or visit CG. Especially since so many bikes are stolen from us. This makes for a no fuss situation. Just pay for a membership and be done with it. A station by Millams/Home Depot & the Coconut Grove Metrorail would be fantastic.
