New CSA starting up in Coconut Grove

For those who want to eat healthy, there is a new Community Supported Agriculture group coming to the Grove, being arranged by Grovite Nick Bernal.

CSA's provide fresh, local produce to urban dwellers at lower costs than the traditional supermarkets. All the produce coming to the Grove CSA will come from farms in the Redland. This concept goes back to the early 1960s and started in Europe.

It works like this: each week, you have the option of purchasing individual "shares" that range between $20 and $30, depending on the week and what is being provided that week. Each share gives you one large box containing a selection of the freshest in season fruits and vegetables. An email will go out to all interested parties each Monday providing the items and costs for that week. Eventually a website will go live and you can then go there to get the info for the week.

Shares can then be ordered by Wednesday by 5 pm for the items that week. They will then be delivered to a central Coconut Grove location for you to pick up on Thursday of that week, by 6 pm.

The CSA will take requests for favorites. Some items planned for this summer season include mangoes, papayas, lychees, avocados, sugar apples, mamey, starfruit, white sapote, guava, sugar cane, bananas and more.
