Night of dignitaries kicks off cultural weekend
To kick off Coconut Grove's big art and cultural weekend, the Windisch-Hunt Gallery hosted a Bahamian reception last night with many dignitaries from Florida and the Bahamas in attendance. The Gallery features Bahamian and Haitian art which will be part of tonight's Gallery Walk.
During the day today, the Bahamian Straw Market, as part of Li'l Bahamas and Grove Day, will feature authentic Bahamian food, wares and music. On Sunday, the weekend is capped off with the Goombay Festival and of course the new Paragon Grove 13 movie theater opened yesterday, so there is plenty of arts, music and culture in Coconut Grove this weekend.
At last night's VIP party: Rep. Oscar Braynon II, Florida House of Representives; Senator Tony Hill, Jacksonville; Gladys Johnson-Sands Council General of the Bahamas; Ralph McCloud, Legislative Assistant to Senator Larcenia Bullard.
Dr. Freddie Young; Gladys Johnson-Sands, Council General; AnnaMaria Windisch-Hunt. The Council General was kind enough to thank us in part of her speech, for giving the Goobay Festival and Grove Day extensive press.
Alistair Stevenson, artist Joann Behagg, Garland and Cooper Hanson, the Royal Bahamian Police Force Pop Band.
Arists Alex Altidor, George Nader, Mary Nader, Louis Louissaint.
Pam Jennings (Goobay Festival board member), Kai Jennings and Lataryn Gay. These sculptures are by Joann Behagg. There is beautiful Bahamian and Haitian art in the Windisch-Hunt Gallery, well worth a trip tonight for Gallery Walk.
The Grove girls: Doreen, AnnaMaria, Eileen and Nicky.
