Bahamian art, music, fashion part of Grove Day


A Cultural Village and Straw Market called 'Lil Bahamas will fill Grand Avenue at Grand Avenue and Virginia Street on Saturday, June 5 for Grove Day from 10 am to 7 pm. The Bahamian Consulate will showcase the Grove's rich Bahamian heritage in partnership with the BID.

Visiting Bahamian Straw Market artisans will display their wares. There will be hands-on demonstrations, tropical fine art (original and prints); “Androsia" fabric and native food products.

The Windisch-Hunt Fine Arts Gallery will showcase Bahamian and Haitian art in a colorful new exhibition. There is an Artist-to-Artist Relief Drive for displaced Haitian artists due to the earthquake.

A Bahamian History Exhibition will be put on by Kinad Inc. Palm Produce will put on a fashion show with fashions by designer Jeff. St. John. One of the guest models will be Miss Bahamas Florida 2010.

Journalist and author Alpheus "Hawk" Finlayson will be signing his new book. And probably the best part is the food, the Taste of the Bahamas will include tropical drinks and specialty cuisine by Nassau's master chef Chea.

A Native Junkanoo Drummer, Reuben Deleveaux, will envelope the streets with the beat of the Bahamas. And legendary Rake and Scrape musician Ancient Man will perform.

Miami Historian Dr. Paul George will guide a walking history tour of Coconut Grove and explain the challenges faced by Grove pioneers. The tour will stop at the location of the former Peacock Inn and Millionaire's Row. A special reception at the Barnacle will follow.

Also as part of Grove Day, the new Paragon Grove 13 movie theaters at CocoWalk will be celebrating their opening weekend. Several promotions designed to offer visitors the ultimate movie going experience will be part of the day's activities. Free movie tickets will be given away to opening weekend films. At 7 pm, the Gallery Walk starts and all the Grove galleries will be hosting receptions with food and drink and lots of art. The day begins at 10 am and ends at 10 pm. The next day, Sunday, June 6 is Goombay Day with the Goombay Festival filling Grand Avenue from 32nd to 37th Avenues.
