How about his real horse and the cop?

horse
I think the dog/horse post below has turned into a fight over dog lovers and dog haters and those in between. I was just trying to show the arrogance of some dog owners with huge dogs that are the size of ponys. Maybe we can change the subject to this.

Who doesn't like this scene? A cop on a horse prancing around the village? The cop is always in a good mood because I guess, he has one of the best jobs. I used his photo on our Grapevine flier cards. He posed for me in front of the Mayfair Hotel once.

Why is having a large dog arrogant? Seriously, maybe your wording is wrong. Just because you are afraid of large dogs, doesn't give you the right to vilify their owners. Again, it is one thing to talk about health issues in restaurants but another issue entirely to discriminate against large dogs, ugly dogs or small rodent-like dogs and everything else in between.

Fact: cops on horseback deter more crime. I'm not sure why, but there is something to it. Likely it's that he can see and hear more than in a car, and run you down in a second, whcih a cop in a car cannot, and sadly most of miami's cops on foot cannot or wouldn't bother.

Any biologist can explain the vast differences between the feces of different species such as a horse and a dog, but I'll go with the most simple and obvious - the food you eat was grown with the aid of cow manure - would you be okay with it being fertilized by human feces? If you answered no, then you're on the right track.

I think the mounted officer serves a very important public relations position for the City of Miami police department. For many, the only interactions that are had with our local PD are either through traffic stops or emergency situations. Since most officers no longer 'walk the beat,' this is a good opportunity for residents to get to know one of our officers. I'd love to see him out in the West Grove a bit more talking to the kids in the neighborhood.

On a note to tie this together with the dog issue, I was walking one of my dogs (Biggie) around the Grove a couple months ago and we came upon the horse and officer on Grand Ave. The two 'beasts' went nose to nose and stared each other in the eyes for about 20 seconds. Biggie was mesmerized by the 1000 pound dog. Was definitely a Kodak moment.

no need for the quotes Stephen, you were using the term quite literally.

I think part of the reason people reacted so strongly to your comments grape may be due to two ideas I have: 1. There are a myriad of quality of life issues that bother people & this was a chance to vent on at least one of them 2. If you haven't been bitten by a dog in your life, its hard for people to understand your individual reaction to the event-it stays with you forever.

As a child, I was bitten by our family dog (7 bites on my back, I stepped on his foot while he was asleep) and I still get a bit edgy when I see that breed that bit me. Maybe one day people will cool their hot heads, and lean more towards careful & polite commenting techniques!!! (P.S., I know it wasn't the dog's fault really, he woke up & panicked)

One thing I didn't mention, I've been bit quite a few times in my life. Twice since I've been living in the Grove. When you work with rescues and spend a lot of time in the dog park, it is bound to happen. The actions of a couple dogs shouldn't scare you from ALL dogs.

Have you ever been punched by a human? If you have, I'd assume you don't hate all humans as a result of it, or else you'd live in the woods and stay out of contact with other people.

Dogs, like humans, can be unpredictable sometimes. It is up to us, as rational beings, to take that into consideration. Generalizing about an entire species, race, gender isn't really fair.

Ana - for the last freaking time - it's bringing them into stores and restaurants that is arrogant.

Stop writing so much and start reading... carefully.

ps. that guy with the big dogs is kind of arrogant, but that's beside the point.

Then complain to the STORE or to the RESTAURANT, not to the owners who are free to do so if the place allows them. Unfortunately for you, there are a lot of dog-friendly places in the Grove. Do not complain about dog owners not asking you if you are afraid of their pets before they walk past you!

This is so absurd... if the store or restaurant allow it, and you don't like it, go somewhere else! If they have a sign that says no dogs, then of course it should be respected.

Ana - If I may interrupt here: were you against the smoking ban too then? Because that is exactly why the smoking ban is preposterous. Bars and shop owners should be able to decide if they want to cater to smokers or non-smokers, just as they should be allowed to decide if they want to cater to dog people or non-dog people. Then we would all patronize the businesses that served our needs and economics would determine what is wanted/needed.

Please find a way to disagree with my logic. If you cannot, and still want choice in this regard, contact your state representative and ask that the smoking ban be overturned.
