Taking a stand for Science Museum

The county plans to cut spending for the arts in the upcoming budget year and the Miami Science Museum is one of the beneficiaries on the cutting blog. There will be a Happy Hour at the Mutiny Hotel (2951 S. Bayshore Drive) to help drum up support and to help the museum collect signatures and letters addressed to the County Commission and County Mayor Carlos Alvarez to keep them from cutting funding.

The Mutiny's Happy Hour is Thursday, August 20 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. A $5.00 donation is requested. The donation goes towards mailings and postage for the cause.

Polar Beer and hors d'oeuvres from Atchana's Thai Restaurant will be served.

The Miami Science Museum have created its own problems.
1. Miami Science Museum has a small to nonexistent endowment.
2. Miami Science Museum has been using staff time and its limited resources to pay out-of-state consultants and out-of-state architects to create a $350 mil new museum which it obviously cannot afford.
3. Miami Science Museum's Director was recently quoted stating the museum might have to close. Duh. You wasted all your money on a foolish scam. No wonder you are begging for a bailout.

Since the Science Museum is broke at its current location what makes them think they can build a $300 mil new building?

Is this another Performing Arts Center disaster in the making? Wasn't the PAC Center 400% over budget and doesn't it require $20 mil a year from the taxpayers to cover operating losses?

This is a classic example of what is so messed up about this country. Because of the economy, my family budget has become constrained so I have to eliminate the non-essentials. A Science Museum (& a bad one at that)is non-essential.

They should go and beg for Federal stimulus money of which only 8% has been distributed. So much for the urgency to get that money circulating to save jobs, the economy & now I guess the museum.

How is that Hope and Change working out for Coconut Grove?

You know, the Science Museum is pretty lame. Some of it is tortured. And it is not cheap for a little family on a budget.

Rethinking things might be a good idea.

Science Museum is out of money now with its current space and high fees.

Why should the taxpayers spend $350mil to build them a new 9 story building on top of Bicentennial Park?
