Abuse of city powers needs to stop now
How do I get one of these free parking passes? Too many people who work for the city have them and they are never on official business. The other day, three lovely ladies pranced out of a BMW in the rain and went to lunch and then they went shopping. Was this on city time, were they doing city business? I don't think they were. Why did they get to park free?
Why are we, the public, stalked by the Parking Authority, even mother's picking up their children at school are stalked, but dozens, dare I say, hundreds of city workers park for free espcially in these tough economic times. The City has depleted more than $50 million in reserves. Let the City workers pay for parking too. It will help bring more money to the City coffers and when their meters are expired, they can pay for those tickets, too in the way of citations like the rest of us mere mortals.
Oh, and let them drive their own cars. We taxpayers are tired of paying for the very cars that are used to stalk and mock us. Give them an allowence for whatever they may use their real cars for, but take away these free cars. 90% of the time they are not used for city business.
Let's have a new rule; City employees have to park and pay at meters in their own cars and not on the sidewalk either.

Although I agree with you, the ironic part is that a very small percentage actually goes to the city. The MPA is its own entity.
Think about that for a second. I am mad every time I get a freaking ticket for being a few minutes over, however I get REALLY mad when my money isnt even going for my streets or cops. It's going directly back to the MPA who can do whatever they want and they just hire more guys to give out more tickets!
The problem is not the City people parking, the problem is the MPA!
I am told that the Parking Authority keeps NONE of the money they collect, that they are "non profit" and it all goes to the City. ALL of it.
The parking plates and city cars are just part of the ongoing abuse of taxpayer funds by city officials, we just need to stay on top of it so more and more people know what's going on, great job!

Grape - I must disagree with your understanding of non-profit. In order to be a non--profit, which is rarely understood by the average person, you simply cannot pay dividends to shareholders or profit based payouts to owners. However, a non-profit can acquire assets with the money it makes, it can invest and diversify however it wishes, and it can pay its employees whatever it wants.
For instance I could start a non-profit and simply pay myself an outrageous salary, and have a company car, and have an executive suite penthouse apartment that I live in, all without being a for profit entity - Just as the Parking Authority does.
Was being fiascoes That Guy. That's why it is in quotes.
Grape, Do you mean FACETIOUS?
Recently the Herald reported on the city's financial crisis du jour.
It states that $100,000 annual pensions are now routine for some city employees, after they quit.
Is it me, or could the government operate OK without offering bizarro-world pensions?
Great reporting once again Grape! The abuse just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the amazing reporting and do not let anyone try to sensor!
All parking money goes to the City of Miami. Read the budget on the City Web site. You will find some interesting facts about the numbers and then you can ask some intelligent questions of the City's Finance Department.
All parking money left over goes to the city of miami....big difference.
The Miami Parking Authority governs itself and gives out its own salaries and increases via its own board.
Which is why the City only gets a few million comapred to its revenue that is over 30 million.
Also why the MPA director Noriega gets about $300,000+ a year

Read the above story about the county's defecit and what they are doing about it. Lay-offs! Will our Commissioners have the 'balls' to initiate Lay-offs!
I am sure that no City of Miami elected leader or employee expects to be treated better then any of the citizens that pay their salaries and pensions with their hard earner taxes (sarcasm)! So lets consider replicating the plexi sign that declares “Official City Business”. Distribute it for free to all Grovite residence and business operators. Have them place it on their vehicle dashboards. Then all of us can feel as special as they do and park like they do, anywhere we wish and not be concerned about feeding the meter, tickets or towing. A little Civil Disobedience helps to demonstrate the inadequacies of government and often helps a democracy become stronger! Remember when Key West got fed up with police ticketing that they cleared themselves the Conch Republic? That sure recived a lot of media attention and the police an local government become a lot more understanding and polite. Let me know when and where the “Official City Business” signs will be made available in the Grove. The restaurant or shop that gives them away will generate more traffic then they have ever had before.

The City has released a copy of all wages of all employees that work for the City of Miami. It is a must read!
File a suit...file a suit
Where, the US Constitution, in article 1 section 9 line 4 forbids Direct Taxation,
being that a direct tax is a tax named and directed towards the items to be taxed.
Direct taxation of real and personal property by xxxxxx County makes null the concept of private property ownership.
Where the perpetual taxation of real and personal property abolishes the concept of Allodial title granted to the American people.
Where the citizens in the county cannot own any property free and clear because direct taxation of personal and real property is an infinite tax.
Notwithstanding, the 16th Amendment nullification of the apportionment clause in Article 1, as the subsequent court cases have made it clear, the 16th Amendment dealt with only the taxation of income, therefore the prohibition of the direct taxation clause of real and personal property remains intact. The case of Commissioner v. Glenshaw Glass Co., 348 U.S. 426 (1955) showed that only income clearly realized should be taxed not the property. Private property such as a homestead does not generate income until said property is transferred or sold to other owners. The counties taxation of accrued Ad Valorem prior to the exchange of ownership constitutes the taxation of nonexistent income that leads directly to the confiscation of real property owned by the citizens who have no intention of ever selling for profit or loss unless forced by property taxes. The fact that the average tax payer in less than 12 years will pay over 50% of the original purchase price on any given property, proves the point as to why the founding fathers inserted the no direct taxation clause.
The plaintiff seeks the immediate arrest and nullification of all sales of tax certificates in the county and the return of collected property taxes dating back to January 2000.
NEXT TIME: take a pic of the "official city business" plate, take a pic of the tag on the car. File a public records request pursuant to FS 119 for the name of the person to whom the "official city business" tag was issued that matches the plate. Then, file another request for the person's time sheets. 99% chances they are NOT on official business. Share the results of your work with the state attorney's office.
I agree. Take pictures. Take pictures of whoever gets out of the car with City plates.
OK you all can also take pictures and submit them! These placards are all over. Any day at lunch time in the grove so snap away everyone!
