I'm just sayin' . . .
The Sweet Dreams Bakery on Commodore Plaza did not open today as scheduled. If you look inside, it looks like there is weeks, if not months' worth of work to do. Not sure why people say they are opening when they obviously are nowhere near ready.
Crazy Pianos is scheduled to open May 6. The scaffolding is down, let's hope they can open on schedule.
Sad to say Basil was shut down for being dirty, roach infested, in fact. I wasn't going to say anything, but the more I think the about it, the more furious I get, since I eat there often.
How hard it is to have the place bug bombed once a month?

...and you call Coral Bagels the "Dirty Diner"??? Disgusting!
You feel good kicking people when they are down. Don't you grapevine gurl?
I eat from Basil 3-4 times a week and was furious when i heard this yesterday. Its not kicking them while there down, its the truth and it should be out there for people to know.
Einstein's is awesome! I know the one by Sunset almost has that local feel even though it's a chain. The same people have been working there forever and they remember your order when you walk in. I think it's a GREAT idea.
So sorry to hear this, really like the fish in parchment paper.
I always feel secure when I can see into the kitchen from the dining area. Then again this sounds so ghastly. A picture is worth a thousand words. Since they had issues with code enforcement could it be trumped up. I know for a fact if you go across US-1 and check any of those hole in the wall places with coffee grinds on the floor right in view. What kind of infestation must the the back areas.
i seriously doubt there is a restaurant in the state of florida that doesn't have cockroaches somewhere.
it goes with the territory. not to mention supermarkets....
two things....
1. Einsteins would be amazing. I love, love, love their Blueberry shmear.
2. Two nights ago I invited Commissioner Regalado to Basil, I talked it up and he was excited for it, when we came it was closed for no apparent reason. We ended up eating at another place.
This makes me really mad, mostly because I love the food. Secondly because I have told EVERYONE about this place.
ugh....talk about a bad taste in your mouth.
And to the other comments, yes there is an easy way to keep roaches out. Its called being clean.
Dont beat yourself up Grape.
WOW! The more I think about it the more mad I get!
Agreed with 12:54, if you eat out then you have your head in the sand to believe everything is sanitary, these are tough and exhausting businesses that need to keep costs down and pests look for food. Here is a challenge, find one restaurant anywhere in the Grove that does not have regular visits by cockroaches or for that matter mice. We all know what the code enforcement has been up to recently, they are here to close down businesses. In fact, not only do we have an onslaught from pest and the code enforcement, now we also have organized crime entering the Grove and trying to shake people down. I tell all of them to kiss me where they should.
i understand that most restaurants are not always roach/infestation free, but not cleaning up the dead ones is pure laziness.
I am glad I used my better judgment and did not eat there.
What does being sanitary have to do with the economy?
Code Enforcement doesn't handle this. It is the state of florida. Its pretty frightening because the kitchen has to be very dirty and has to have alot of infestations to be closed down. Usually they are just given a warning and have to clean up within 30 days.
First, let me say I love Basil and I ate there even after I heard these atrocious stories. But, there were two occasions that my girlfriend took a family member there and when they got the bill a cockroach came out of the bill book. The girl at the register (my girlfriend gets up to pay) just swiped it away as if it wasn't even a big deal. This happened TWICE! I chalked it up to a bad experience, but my girlfriend never ate there again.
Basil, I'm sorry to say, has had a roach problem for a while. I hate it because I know there are roaches and mice in most restaurants, but once it gets out of control it's time to close.
I feel so bad for the owners because this is something a business usually never bounces back from. But, if they would have taken care of the problem before it became a problem, they wouldn't be closed down.
Finally, though I love this restaurant, they deserve to be kicked while they're down. How dare they do that to their patrons! I ate there a bunch of times and loved their entire menu, and because they were dirty, they could have gotten people sick. THESE ARE ROACHES WE'RE TAKING ABOUT!!!!!! God knows what other gross things were going on there.
P.S. There should NOT be an Einstein's in the Grove...keep it small business all the way.
After reading all of this- I probably will not eat in the Grove again. Or any where, since this seems to be a common problem as reported.
We will just have to start cooking at home again, and hope that everything we buy at the "public" markets meets the proper sanitary standards.
no more chains in the grove please. we used to be a village of independent shops and that's why people went out of their way to come here. it was only here they could get that unique product.
now, why would i would fight the nasty CG parking dudes and lame parking options to go to american apparel or gap or chili's or any of those places that come with free parking lots everywhere else in the city?
ever been to sanibel? that's how it should be done. indie doesnt mean "lo-rent" it means, non-corporate and independently run. Sanibel has quite a scene going on, in all price ranges, of great food options, arts, crafts, and tourist type stores.with not ONE SINGLE CHAIN
When you put up so many barriers to entry - regulations, taxes, parking assessments, etc., not to mention sky-high rents - only the chains can afford to go into business.
I agree that we need a bagel place in the grove. It doesn't have to be a chain. I actually happen to love Einsteins & frequent the South Miami location since it is on my way to work. But, it would be great to have something similar here. Also, they open early (5:30 a.m.) on weekdays and that is great. I leave for work some mornings at that time and nothing else is open.
I do agree though that we don't need any more chains.
And I don't have anything to say about the cocroach situation except that if a business can't keep it under control they should be closed. Having enough of a problem to be closed down = BAD!
Well Felice at the Bookstore today told me that they have the best bagels in the Grove and I know they do. What I meant about Einstein was just their whole breakfast and lunch concept and not so much bagels, but everything.
You're right SWLIP - is it futile to hope that would ever change?
Or is it truly time to move to Wynwood?
And by that I mean, an arts community that allows its artists to survive. And it's residents access to their own community without corporate and moneyed tourists being the priority. And where there are bagel shops we can walk to?
I truly do have to decide as my lease expires in a few weeks.
I hate the cream cheese at Einsteins. It's that whipped stuff that they fluff up with so much air so they can save money on using the real good creamy stuff.
