Finally getting his issue heard

Daniel Diaz, the resident who does not like the condition of the small marina in the neighborhood, and feels that the decrepit condition is a danger to many, has a meeting today at Commissioner Marc Sarnoff's office with a bunch of city officials. It took Daniel 13 years to got someone to listen. Sarnoff is the one listening.

Daniel is the one who put up signs like this, to get the attention of politicians. Manny Diaz did not respond, even though he is the one called out on the signs. Marc Sarnoff did.

good for you Daniel. I hope you get something accomplished today with the Commisioners. Those boats, verandas and poles are an eyesore....not to mention 100% dangerous during hurricane season.

I don't understand why a neighbor has to go this far to be heard....shouldn't a public official be a phone call away? If it is true that he has been trying to get in touch with the officials , then we have a big problem within the City.....they are not doing their job.

I don't understand something.....in the previous news about the sign, one blogger said the Mayor is aware of what's happening and also that he leaves in Fairview....does that mean that he also has rights to use the dock? Is he and the City neglecting to respond to Daniel Diaz because the Mayor does not want to give up the dock usage? Also someone said that the right to dock has been there for years and years, but I think that just because somtething was done wrong for the last 30, 40 or 50 years, it should not continue to be done wrong for the next 50!!!! This is getting really interesting. Please keep us informed, I want to know how the meeting goes!!!!

I met Daniel last night at the sailing club. He made a point there of saying Commissioner Regalado was the only person who had responded to him. It sounded from talking to him like his complaint has to do with a waterfront property owner who has three vessels tied up at his own property, but Daniel feels they are not secure and could damage his home if there is a storm. He has a legitimate concern, and I hope the City can help him, but it's possible there's nothing they can do. If his homeowner's association has rules, maybe they could enforce their rules and help that way.

He is wasting his time with the city. He will have much better luck getting in contact with the Feds. He should contact the US Army Corps of Engineers regulatory office in Miami. The army corps still holds absolute control over all navigation and can impose fines and require removal of both unpermited AND unpermited structures even after the fact. The corps always retains the ability to remove impediments to navigation.

Good for Daniel; if this is the only way you can get the City's attention - go for it. Unfortunately most of us do not have such a visible location to post a banner.

Obviously Michelle Niemeyer was incorrect. Commissioner Regaldo was not the only one listening to Daniel Diaz. It appears Mr. Diaz had been communicating with Commissioner Sarnoff's office for months and in fact Mr. Diaz had a scheduled meeting with Marc Sarnoff the next day.

Now Mr Diaz gets to see if the City Administration actually does something to help a private citizen.
