The Marlins want to flip the stadium using our money

sanity

The graphic above by Harry Emilio Gottlieb, titled, "Marlins baseball stadium deal also requires a 'sanity clause,' " says it best.

You read it here first, that one problem with the new Marlin's stadium is that there were rumors that the owners plan to flip the stadium once they get the booty from the taxpayers. I was actually told this by someone deep inside negotiations.

Today's
Herald talks about a "death clause," where if owner Jeffrey Loria dies, the heir does not owe taxpayers anything.

The stadium deal is a scam to fill the pockets of a select few. The public gets NOTHING out of it. Just say no.

I am keeping an eye on Commissioner Joe Sanchez who wants to be mayor. I am interested in his vote on this and the Grove Harbour Marina office building deal.

Sanchez is in the pocket of the Marlins. He tries to pass it off as jobs and redevelopment of Lil Habana. He has rolled over for everything the Marlins asked for. Sanchez is an empty suit.

Joe Sanchez? Sanchez acts like a lobbyist for the Marlins? When Sarnoff suggested the Commissioners consider changes to the documents to benefit the taxpayers Sanchez threw a fit.

Sanchez has not figured out the Marlins cannot relocate to another city. With this recession and with baseball in decline no city in America will pay for a stadium.

Get a grip! This is a tourist town and most people who live here are also from other places so it will certainly serve them. The stadium will serve many people, if not you.

A tourist destination needs an umbrella of attractions to enhance it's appeal. That's why we use tourist dollars to fund tourist projects. We needed a performing arts center even though a HUGE percentage of the residents will never step foot inside. We need convention centers that appeal to only a small percentage of residents. We need all these things to thrive.

Baseball is part of this scenario. It has proven to be a major player in the role of revitalizing cities all across America. Just because it doesn't appeal to you, don't post untruths about it. It's part of the big picture.

Do something to change our political system if you want to make some real changes. Stop complaining and become authentically proactive.

To Anonymous 8:55 am your comment makes no sense and it contradicts the facts. Tourists do not visit baseball stadiums outside their own hometowns. (Actually 1% to 1.5% of spectators at baseball games are tourists. This rises for World Series and All Star events, but those events are rare.)

Tourism is the most important business in South Florida. We have no traditional industry. Unlike a sports stadium which is only used several hundred hours a year tourism is a 7 day a week 24 hour a day industry. Why should money (bed taxes) that is allocated to promote and maintain this crucial business (tourism) be diverted to benefit the out-of-town owner of the privately owned Marlins?

And by the way, Anonymous 8:55 am, do you realize the stadium and its garage will cost the taxpayers a minimum of $2 billion? Perhaps much more?

If baseball is so popular, why isn't it self-supporting? It used to be. Did the owners screw it up somehow?
