Merchants concerned about the movie theater closing

At the last Village Council meeting, Felice Dubin, Village Council member, brought up the fact that the AMC movie theater at CocoWalk is closing for an extended period of time for renovation soon. It will become a first class Muvico megaplex theater when it reopens. She wondered if it was possible to have the Coconut Grove Playhouse used as a movie theater in the interim.

The merchants are concerned about what will happen when the movie theater is closed for many months -- five to ten. They feel it is an integral part of business at night.

Felice was told that the playhouse currently is in no shape to house the movie theater, let alone it's current job as a playhouse.

So now locations are being sought to show first run movies until Muvico opens it's new theaters.

We were told by an emoployee of the theater that Muvico backed out and will not be taking over. He said that AMC would be staying.

lets have an outdoor theater. sunset cinemas inc had one on bayfront park, why not do one at peacock park?
as long as it doesn't interfere with kickball.

Nice thought, except when it comes to the May-September time of the year.

Grape, whatever became of the multiplex in the Mayfair?

I frankly doubt that you can find a suitable, off-the-shelf replacement. A modern movie theater requires more than just a projector and screen; it requires extensive sound systems, acoustics work, etc. I'm "old school" - I like the sound of the projector clicking in the background - but younger audiences expect more.

Peacock Park would be nice... until the skeeters get ya. We'll have to come up with an alternative, maybe one of the empty shop spaces at mayfair can be turned into a movie theater for a year.

I am told by CocoWalk and the Village Council that Muvico is still coming and the theater is happening. AMC is going. I don't have the dates yet.

I am not at all surprised... AMC has clearly not done much to keep this location in prime condition, which is a shame considering the traffic at CocoWalk.

I am wondering if AMC could keep half the theater open while work is done on the other half, then switch? Not likely since there's a change of ownership, and I am sure AMC is ready to cut bait get the heck out.

Wake up folks. In the next three months approx 2.5-million American jobs will be eliminated. Pop corn and coke is about $7.00, schools are being closed, American's are in debt about $1.5 trillion and you better get your heads screwed on in the correct direction because there are a lot of things that need to get accomplished together to make our communities work and you people waste your energy concerned about some movie theater? Try entertaining yourselves trying to help in a meaningful way.

More of reason why we need a Movie theatre to escape. When the lights go out on the AMC Theatre, CocoWalk will really feel the closure. I have visited a Muvico in Charleston SC, and it is really Great. Beautiful seats, everything delivered to your seat, from popcorn to a burger with fries. All the staff wear black, and the theatre is set up so they are not a problem, which I thought they would be. Coconut Grove has always been about the Arts, and yes a movie threatre is a strong part of our sweet Village.

Life is about to change right before our very eyes. I suspect I'm a bore, but I would not want to be served in a movie theater and have learned how to sew, plumb, elec, mason, dive for lobster, fish, dig ditches, trim trees, paint, art, mechanic, navigate, hunt, raise children, drink coconut milk, cook, etc. I don't want to be served, rather, I want to be independent----I enjoy movies, TV and sunsets and I still don't want to be served and it's time for everyone to do their fair share. Pull up the GEORGIA GUIDESTONES on the internet and look at guide # 1 and get ready for a world change.

I for one, am looking forward to the Muvico experience. It's been quite some time since I've been out to the movies, primarily because of the obnoxious crowd. Maybe at a more upscale theater, the experience will be better.

Remember Borders bookstore closed,
not because the store wasn't making money,
but because it wasn't making enough money for corporate headquarters.
i wonder if the same is going on here.

of course some people want everything handed to them.....how much will this cost? The economy is horrible and most people can not afford to pay more than they are already paying for a movie. I do not want anyone to bring me my phone but of course the rich and famous want everything handed to them.....

so upscale and luxury is supposed to be better? yeah right with extra zeros at the end of it. But your a real estate developer, so I guess you can afford it, right? NOT

That's what you think the Grove is? So I guess you want to tear down all the buildings on Grand Ave too, so it can be more upscale, ridiculous...move to the Gables, Pinecrest, or one of South Beach's private Islands or even Key Biscayne. Take your pick. The Grove is different, and that us why I like living here...

Excuse me for thinking incorrectly, here, but wouldn't an improved movie theater benefit the community by, you know, making money and employing people?

Sheesh, and people accuse me of being a scrooge.

Anon, you must be a sad little person to have to snark about someone else's modest success in life. I'm not rich by any means, but I was poor for a long time, and worked hard for what I have.

And don't worry about being able to afford the new Muvico. With The One and Nancy Pelosi in power, there isn't anything standing between my wallet and yours (though you may be disappointed to find out how little is actually there).
