The Grove needs a "real" tree lighting ceremony
The Gables does it right at the end of Miracle Mile. Thousands of people show up and they enjoy the ceremony and when it is over, they shop, eat and spend money on Miracle Mile.
Here in the Grove, people show up at the festivities at City Hall, but when the party is over, they get into their cars and leave.
Maybe next year we can have a big Coconut Grove tree somewhere in the center of town. City Hall can do their thing, as I see it more of a political thing.
But maybe next year, and for years to come, the Merchants Association or BID can set up a huge event on a weeknight, where thousands can fill the Central Business District in the Grove for the night. Before and after the actual tree lighting, people could eat, drink, shop and enjoy our galleries.
That being said, there are some beautiful trees throughout the Grove, including the City Hall tree, but there is the spoon ornament tree at Jaguar and CocoWalk has a great tree and Mayfair has one of the prettiest trees, in the arcade, where the bull sculpture is. Shown here.

I actually thought the city hall tree lighting ceremony was absolutely wonderful and had a small-town feeling. Yes, the politicians were there, but the plentiful free food, family entertainment, 4 marching bands, etc., were something out of It's a Wonderful Life. I was not alone in that feeling. Yes, of course the Grove could put on their on "show", and Peacock Park is the perfect place, with parking at the convention center. Plenty of space for all kinds of extras in addition to the tree -- and maybe advertise the Fresh Air Flicks there -- tonight is Miracle on 34th Street -- a marvelous free outdoor movie event at 7PM that not many people know about. This is a true gift to he community -- two years ago Casablanca drew hundreds of people to that park near the commercial area. Let's just figure out how to get the word out! I know you posted the ad, but hardly anyone I talk to know about it. Thank you for all you do to make the Grove the Grove!
I have a post ready to run this morning about the movie in the park, you guys like to take the thunder out of it by exposing so many of my stories in your comments before I get a chance to post them.
I agree the tree lighting did nothing for the merchants it was all about politics.
How appropriate it would be to light the tree in the Mayfair arcade next to the BULL!
Well for all the people bitchin' about the City Hall tree lighting ceremony, I saw a lot of Grovites chowing down the free food, which by the way was very good. I bet even Glenn Terry who complains about in his article today was there chowing down.
The food at city hall was terrible. All fried food prepared very cheaply. It was a nice thought, but a very unhealthy and heart-burn filled feast.
Are you kidding me, you wanted maybe organic food? Tell me you are not COMPLAINING ABOUT FREE FOOD! There were at leat seven different kinds of food, apparently you tried it all and then decided it was unhealthy! You are probably the kind of person who eats half his meal and then tells the restaurant you didn't like it!
I was there too and the food was BAD. Terrible. The people eating there would eat dog food if it was free. They looked like animals stuffing their faces because it was free. No class.
