Sign of the times

Dave Collins and I were chatting on a corner this morning, enjoying the beautiful sunny Grove morning and again, as usual, we saw a bunch of lost tourists.

They tried to get info from the couple of maps on the streets, but those don't say much and of course the black info booths are a lost cause and we thought that maybe some of these M*A*S*H signs would work in various areas around the Grove.

I call them M*A*S*H signs because I think that is where I saw them first, on the tv show.

We could have one near CocoWalk and and various other areas so that tourists know that a block or two away there are other restaurants and stores. As I have stated in the past, many people just stop walking when they see that Jaguar is closed. So maybe some brightly colored signs could point to Commodore Plaza and say "More food/drink 1 block" or "More shopping 2 blocks" or "art galleries 2 blocks," perhaps one could say "Hotel" and point toward hotels in the area, you know, things like that. Maybe even "Internet Café" or "Bookstore." Useful things that people look for.

Maybe they could even point to the waterfront, I honestly don't think tourist who get off the tour buses even have a clue about our beautiful waterfront. One sign could point to the post office, as awful as it is, I am sure tourists might appreciate that, and maybe the Chamber or NET office would be good as a destination, too.

I took this photo at the St. Stephen's Arts and Crafts fair one year, but our signs could be similar to this and the M*A*S*H sign combined and maybe be more colorful and whimsical and it the signs would add a lot of color to the Grove as well serve a very useful function.

I honestly think four or five or more, pointing to various areas of interest would encourage people to explore the area more.

Some similar signs have been put-up in South Beach, and I think it's a pretty good idea for the tourists.

If you're a very touristy area, you want to make sure they're always pointed in the right direction.

one at the corner of tigertail/oak and mary would be great. I am often waived by drivers trying to find cocowalk etc.
