We need new and larger grocery stores

I like the idea that the Planning Advisory Board voted to support an amendment to the building code that would allow larger grocery stores in the Grove this past week. It will allow Milam's to expand and also allow for a decent sized supermarket to be built as part of the Grove Village project on Grand Avenue.

This will bring much needed jobs to the area, but also will bring more options to the area.
Trader Joe's and Sweetbay, are you reading this?

Here is the form to suggest a Trader Joe's for the Grove. And if you see Mia, at CocoWalk, you can mention Sweetbay to her, apparently her partner, Earl Wesson, is involved with Sweetbay.

I am thrilled that Pointe Group is putting in a grocery store on Grand Avenue. Maybe it could be a GreenWise Publix like they have up north?
It is also great for the people in the West Grove because they will have a grocery store that they can walk to.

I DON'T agree at all. First I am against tearing down Grand Avenue buildings, and the Fresh Market is within walking distance to most people in the Grove. If not get on your bike!

Anon 11:54,
Let me get this straight...Say I live just west of McDonald Street, the easternomost border of Village West closest to Fresh Market. Round trip, the walk is about a mile and a half. I'm elderly, living on a fixed income and hardly up to the trek in summer heat or rain, especially the trip back with my groceries. Not to mention that the top-dollar that Fresh Market charges is well beyond my budget. I'm trying to think of the words to describe your position. Oh yeah, here they are...out of touch elitist snob.

What a jerk. The Fresh Market has 1/10th of what a supermarket has and is near 1/4 of the Grove population.

Plus it never hurts to have competiton in the area. The more the better.

Fresh Market is a specialty store which is not even that fabulous really (of course I'm comparing to NY and that's not really fair) Its OK and for Miami it will do. We need supermarkets for the rest of us who prefer to use Fresh Market for special dinners where we can't get certain "luxury" items anywhere else and do our weekly shopping in a "regular" market where we can buy cleaning items, dog food and the rest of our needs without being ripped off.

Fresh Market doesn't sell diapers or baby food.
But I do agree that lots of people could fit in a bike commute or two in once in a while.

I think it's great to have a suppermarket on grand and I don't find any redeeming qualities to the buildings that are on grand ave presently .

No, I certainly don't think that we should tear up anybody's home for any reason. But let's not call Fresh Market a grocery store either shall we? That was my only point and now I'll shut up.

I think its hilarious that all you hippie crybabies that bitched and moaned about Home Depot are now opening your arms to a big box grocery store. Cant wait to hear you bitching when Grand Ave is crawling with delivery trucks. Oh wait, you already do that whenever Sandbar gets a new keg delivered...

40,000 square feet is NOT a big box store. Home Depot wanted 170,000 square feet, that is a big box store.

Grove Village is being built, might as well put something there that people will use like a grocery store.

Grocery stores, even big ones, do not have lumber and cement departments along with out-of-work sous-chefs lurking about in the parking lot looking for pick-up day work.

I think a Trader Joe's would be perfect in the Grove. They have so much variety and their prices can't be beat. I lived in California for a few years and totally fell in love with those stores. I filled in the form requesting one here.

After reading Elena's comment, I'm not sure if Trader Joe's is what people want if they really desire a grocery store in the Grove and not another specialty store.

I'd say Trader Joe's is a specialty stores. I tended to shop at Trader Joe's for funky items, coffee, and Two Buck Chuck when I had one close by. The average person is not going to do their grocery shopping at Trader Joe's.

In relation to the issue of grocery stores, have any Grove citizens ever spoken about organizing a not for profit food Co-Op? An outfit with a strong dedication to enhance local and regional economies by supporting Floridian and Southeastern food producers.

If it could work anywhere in Miami, I think it could work here. Residents with the means and interest in the Grove could become fast fully-capitalized members for
X amount while those with modest means could capitalize over years with a small yearly payment.

Eventually, all the Folks in the Grove would own a part of their grocery store.
