"Hiawatha Project" ready for ground breaking

The "Hiawatha Project," actually called the Residences at Vizcaya is cordoned off and ready for ground breaking. A reader wrote me, concerned about Steele Park on the corner.

Steele Park is part of the development plan. They are not building on that actual ground, but there are plans to do work in the park like adding a walk-thru entrance gate onto West Glencoe Street behind it and making other modifications. But the park is still going to be a city owned park. The developers are just making it a nicer park.

They don't want people near the demolition of Chateau Elizabeth for safety reasons. This is at Hiawatha Avenue and South Bayshore Drive and includes Steele Park.

I am unclear as to the need to fence off Steele Park when they could have just as easily fenced off the parking areas and cul-de-sac at the end of Hiawatha to accomplish what you have described. We have few enough parks in the Grove. Even though Steele Park is a pretty pathetic park it is still public green space and shouldn't be used as a staging area for a new development. Frankly, the developer should upgrade the park as a good will gesture to the neighborhood for the noise, increased construction traffic and general inconvenience this project will cause. My guess is that they have cut a deal with the city to park their cars and equipment on the site. So much for our city officials looking out for the neighborhood. Why we don't see the city requiring developers to provide shuttles from public transit stations rather than allowing workers to park all over the neighborhoods is another topic but a very good one to discuss.
