Trouble in Kennedy Park

This past Saturday, March 29, at approximately 5:00 pm, in Kennedy Park, two-year-old Savannah was almost taken by a man on a bicycle. Savannah, was playing tag with her nannies who were about four feet from her when a man on a bicycle passed them and proceeded to scoop Savannah up and put her on his lap while riding.

He was cycling off with her when the nannies chased him down, screaming for him to stop. The nannies cornered the man and grabbed the toddler from his arms. When they began calling for the police the man raced off on his bicycle.

Description: White Caucasian Male aged 50–60, light eyes, believed to be homeless. Wearing old, dirty clothes and riding an old-fashioned bicycle. If you see this man, please call the police.

I think I know who the guy is, I mean I've seen him before riding down the streets. Old style bicycle, Is it a three wheeler bike in silver, with white handle bars. If it is I see the bike and man hanging out by the Logger head all the time.

Just playing devil's advocate, when this kind off stuff happens, we are often too swift about reacting. If we do find the guy, before we go running after him with pitchforks and flares, let the police do their job, and give him the benefit of the doubt know as innocent until proven guilty.

Is it possible-- just possible, that like Frankenstein, maybe this was just a case of some poor idiot with bad judgement wanting to play with the kid and her nannies (plural nannies for a 2 year old?-- really?). Consider the fact that the guy is described as a homeless guy. Not that many homeless are interested in kidnapping-- for one, they have no place to take the kid they "nap" to, not to mention that most homeless guys are poor planners, which is why they are homeless in the first place.

Then, consider that he was on a bike, and the nannies, on foot, still caught up with him-- obviously he was not speeding off to make a getaway.

Of course he ran off when they yelled for the police who were nearby, as any homeless, shabbily dressed man would do if a couple of women were yelling at him.

I am sure it was nevertheless very scary, and a good thing that the nannies probably took the course at the organization that the mother of the almost-kidnapped child runs, which teaches child caretakers (nannies) how to cope with potentially dangerous situations. The course costs $160.00. Check out the website that was included in the signature line of the many emails that got circulated: www.oscarproject.org

The course is a good idea, by the way. Too bad it's not free and available at the Y, or through a City Park program, as these types of things used to be when we were kids.
