The Herald had a story about book stores. Saying that the Book Festival was coming up and ironically, the City of Miami, including Coconut Grove, has no general interest book stores. But we do have one coming. It will be on the corner of Virginia Street and Grand Avenue at the old Banana Republic location.
What would you like to see in the new book store coming to the Grove? Other than books, of course. :)
Book stores are nice for browsing, but when I actually want to buy a book, I go to Amazon.com. After all, why would I want to pay for parking, stand in line waiting for the bovine attention of employees who barely acknowledge my presence to ask them where to find something, then pay full price plus sales tax, when I can one-click order the same item from my house?
If we have a bookstore in the Grove, let's support it. It will have a cafe, a great gift selection, computers, etc. We have griped for so long about not having a bookstore that we need to make this one work. Supporting Amazon.com is like supporting Wal-mart. They will also have children's activities and readings and book signings and all the things we desperately need. Let's stop complaining and get excited.
When I lived in St. Petersburg, FL, we had a great independent books store, Haslams. There isn't anything like that here in the Grove. There aren't even coffee shops here besides starbucks - there were so many in St. Pete. I'm happy there is a bookstore coming. That's progress.
I would love to see something in the Books & Books format, and I will visit and buy books at the new book store. I live here and I love to walk to shop. Bring it on it, and I hope others will come too.
I will spend at least 250 every month as long as they have great magazine selection and fantastic cookbook department. Thaths what I give to Books&Books and Barnes... So why not support something that belongs to Grove, the easiest thing is to complaint and bitch isnt it? Lots of unhappy people huh?
My wish list (since you asked): Comfy couches, cool, airy decor, our Grove artists' work gracing the walls, live music sometimes, free WiFi, outdoor seating for peeps and their pooches, a bike stand, and green tea.

i never buy books online. i like to spend time finding a good one with my own eyes. Id love to see a decent magazine selection.
I just want them to be nice -
a storytime for kids would be nice, too.

Another St. Pete native, here. Haslam's was (still is, but the owner recently died) an institution. There's nothing like that in Miami.
I'm willing to bet that a random survey of people visiting the Center Grove would reveal that most of them don't read books.
And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Just a theory.
Good to have swlip complaining about the service even before the store opens.
swlip is the one, he knows himself, ask him how much he reads.
