Traffic circle or not?
One thing bothering many is the traffic circle planned for area where Day and Tigertail Avenues meet, shown on the map above. If you click on the map, it will open larger. I have to admit, that area is a mess and accidents are waiting to happen. It is pretty wide in that area already and a traffic circle may help.
Many people complain that traffic circles are foreign to Miami drivers, but they do seem to be popping up in many neighborhoods and the big one at the Cartagena Plaza, better known as "Cocoplum Circle" seems to work just fine. It's so popular, it has it's own listing in Wikipedia here. That's a Google Earth image of the circle below.

i think it will help. The one on ponce and us 1 seems to keep the traffic flowing without big backups and that is a high volume area. same with the cocoplum circle. A simple flyer in the mail to all residents reminding them of the rules of the traffic circle might help (Especially that yield means YIELD NOT STOP. If everyone just stops for the hell of it, it defeats the purpose of the thing.)
I got used to them when I lived in Europe, and think that the ones that have popped up in the Gables, and now the Brickell area, work just fine. I actually think that they are more "democratic" than traffic lights, which often seem to be timed arbitrarily.
A well designed traffic circle would reduce the danger of people entering the intersection of 27th and Tigertail from Day Ave.
I grew up with traffic circles in New Jersey. It's not a big deal, and I've never understood the fuss. It's far easier than most ramps on and off the interstate.
Critical Miami has a more detailed image of the intersection with the circle, and having seen it, I think that it is absolutely essential to fixing the traffic flow at that complex intersection.
As a Gables resident, I'm definitely in favor of traffice circles.
I would suggest, as a user, that the local government do spend some money on advising residents, through flyers and maybe some neighbors ads, that Yield is not stop... it is yield.
Traffic circles do keep traffic moving well and fluidly
And, naturally, on off hours, when there is no traffic, they are a neat way to try out the adhesiveness of your tires and the cornering ability of your new Bimmer or Audi
Yes, of course. What's the big deal? Some people have way too much time on their hands. Traffic circles look better than your average intersection, in my humble opinion, and I live on 27th Avenue.
I like the idea. I hope they can make the circle large enough to accommodate the amount of traffic in the area though. Should work out fine.
I come from MA - home of the Rotary (fancy name for traffic cicle). Rotaries are great, but you do need competent drivers to really make them work properly. Perhaps Miamians arent familiar with the Yield Sign? That or maybe it needs to be made larger so it really stands out?
Oh, and Swlip Day Ave is a one-way that can only be taken away from 27th, not towards. I take it every day and its not cool when someone tries coming down the wrong way. I guess if they opened a traffic circle though, it may be feasible to make that a 2-way street. Then again, that would make 5 entrances to said circle and that may not work...
I heard they are going to reverse day's direction which will mean no more traffic off of 27th which would be nice. And now the homeowners who all drive down the wrong way now will be going the right way.
Remember that not a lot of people walk across or around the traffic circle at Cocoplum. That will not be the case on 27th Ave. Cocoplum does get bicycle traffic but bit a lot of pedestrians.
I need to correct a mistake in my earlier comment; it is TRANSIT MIAMI, not CRITICAL MIAMI, that has a blog up on this topic.
If it's done right, pedestrian crossing should turn out to be safer than it is now.
Anything that puts in wider, shadier sidewalks and bike lanes gets my approval.
Traffic circles improve gas mileage because vehicles do not stop completely. They improve the flow of traffic.

You cant be serious... And actually, vehicles do occasionally come to a stop in a traffic circle as they must yield to traffic that is already in said circle.
A more appropriate place for a traffic circle would be 22 Ave and Tigertail. That is where we really need one.
You know, you might be right about that Anon. Those stop signs back up traffic like crazy during the week, especially when school has later activities and parents pick up their kids at Ransom.
