CocoWalk's Grand Re-Opening

The Grand Re-Opening Celebration of CocoWalk (3015 Grand Ave.) is Friday and Saturday. I didn't know they had closed, I thought they just retiled the floor.

Friday consists of a parade and entertainment by some Cajun-Zydeco and New Orleans bands. Saturday will have "all day parades" with a Mardi Gras theme. Marlins Mermaids will be signing autographs and there will be lots of bands and entertainment on the main stage.

Saturday night's shows consist of: Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, Mark Farner formerly of Grand Funk Railroad, Joy Lynn Turner formerly of Deep Purple & Rainbow and Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult.

Funny thing is that the businesses in the area are dropping like flies... Bye bye Banana Republic, Guess, and now Sunglass Hut. I cant imagine it will be too long before Coyote Ugly, "Apples" (or whatever it is) and Martini Bar are gone too. Matter of fact, who even goes to those places? I heard that Cocowalk has been raising the rents in order to attract higher-end dealers like those at Merrick Park. Sounds like higher-end failure to me...

I also heard that Chili's is coming and will be right above Cheesecake Factory. I like Chili's, but I really dont see why we need ANOTHER place that offers the same stuff that you can get at Hooters, Sandbar, Moes, Green Street, etc. Oh, and I laughed when I saw that Firkin & Friar has been 86'd and renamed as something else. They shouldve renamed it "Total Failure". I checked out Cristobelle's Quarter yesterday and it looks gorgeous. Only thing I worry about is how it will fill up... The owner does not want to make it a nightclub, thank god, but I think that they are going to have to really come up with a creative marketing plan to attract enough customers because the place is HUGE.

Buy the Book The Secret Blind Mind, it may cheer up your negative outlook on life. You sound like a totally miserable human being.

I don't think Blind Mind sounds miserable at all. They're just stating the facts. I don't know anyone who goes to Coyote Ugly or Apples. They seem like lousy bars. I'd rather go to Moe's or Sandbar. I am however looking forward to Chili's.
I see American Apparel eventually going the same route as BR and Guess pretty soon. If people weren't shopping there, I see them even less interested in neon colored t-shirts and leggings. Which makes me wonder how in the world stores like Out of Africa have survived. How many wood carved elephants and miscelanious trinkets can they possibly be selling?
I'd like to see Cristobelle's Quarter make it, but I agree with Blind Mind in them needing an awfully creative marketing plan to maintain consistent business for such a large space.

BOOK STORE!
BOOK STORE!
BOOK STORE!

Why can we get a B&N instead of the damn Home Depot. It's a real shame that B&N (or was it a borders) in mayfair closed. I must admit it was in a terrible location but they always seemed to have people. Their book selection was a little thin, what with half the store dedicated towards music.

The CocoWalk/Mayfair area desperately needs a bookstore I agree - that place was great!

What Coconut Grove needs is an identity - and I'm not sure it has one.

Good headups on that CocoWalk reopening - I'll definitely be dropping by.

Miserable? I think not. Im actually quite happy. Like the other "anonymous" who backed me up said - Im just stating the facts. So relax, chief.

Id really like to see my neighborhood grow and I think that it is growing slowly but surely. The restaurant quality is really picking up. I had dinner at Ristorante Da I'Frasca last night and it was absolutely delicious. You know youre in for a legit Italian Meal when youve got legit Italians serving you and the owner coming out to describe each dish for you. The Grove was buzzing last night and it was a Wednesday. Reggae at 3484 Main Hwy, other Bob Marley playing on Commodore, even "Waldos" (the old Firkin, which I believe changed its name for tax purposes LOL) had a crowd. I went out Tuesday night too and Green Street was packed (except the bar, which I thought was weird), Moes was also a good time once it got to be around 11pm cuz most everyone, including me, was hammered and people were singing karaoke.

I like seeing the nicer places like Cielo and Cristobelle's Quarter starting to emerge. I know I stated that having higher end shops in Cocowalk would be higher end failure, but Im saying that only in regards to shops, not dining. It would be nice to push some of the college crowd and get rid of some of the dumps and promote to a "young adult" or "business" crowd that will actually spend money in the Grove on things other than alcohol and pizza.

bookstores and music stores are slowly succumbing to the internet. you wont see one in coconut grove. thre isnt enough parking there to support major retail anyway,so xpect more bars and pizza joints.

I dont know whats going on with the Mayfair and dont care too much for it. I can ensure you cocowalk is heading for changes some are very positive. Rent might be high but if people are coming then thats all that matters. Chili's is going to be huge 2 4 1 drinks coming in with a brand new desighn really looking forward to that coyote ugly set themselves up for failure allowing anyone who walked by to see everything going on inside. Vision and Apple well I dont think they have been very succesful with all the new night clubs they have build I dont predict that they will be around much longer. Whoever said that they wish they would be something diffrent to the grove and chili's was not it then maybe you should take a look at there menue again fajitas??? where in the grove and have you seen there new burger selection or there honey chipotle chicken I firmly beleive the grove is finally taken the right step to the right direction the ghetto is getting further pushed its much cleaner and well I know things that are coming to the grove that will appeal to a family enviroment atmosphere like it once did many years ago.
