I saw the sign going up today, it makes me so sick I'm speechless.
So is that it? Are they coming in? Are there no more legal barriers?
I thought there were still ongoing permitting issues.
Let's boycott them out of business. I can already hear across the Grove the cracking reverberation of warehouse doors, pallets falling, beeping forklifts zooming about and the truck doors slamming after midnight. Boycott Ho Depot. Maybe that will make them understand that we do not hate them, we just do not want them here.
boycott them. Then put an indoor flee market.
IT'S NOT OVER YET!
The Big Box Fight Continues
How disappointing it is to the citizens and residents of Coconut Grove who have fought so hard for the past 2 l/2 years with their hearts and their wallets to save their Village from the mis-use of the former K-mart site. Unfortunately City planning officials, along with the City attorneys, have chosen to ignore the residents, the voters, and the City Commissioners. City officials continue to ignore and misinterpret the NCD-3 Ordinance passed in December 2005 prohibiting any "big box" from coming into Coconut Grove without obtaining a Special Exception for the operation of any space over 20,000 sq. ft retail with a limit of 70,000 sq ft retail. This law helps protect the neighborhoods: by way of example, the law forces delivery trucks to approach from arterial roads such as US-1 versus the smaller Bird Road. Without required review or hearing, the City has made unique exceptions for Home Depot as it continues to build out the K-mart store.
There is presently pending a lawsuit by the site’s neighbors against the City of Miami. The aim of that suit is to require the City to obey its own laws. When our City’s executive branch fails to abide by the laws the Commission passes, citizens must turn to the courts, and the residents must continue their fight.
During these legal proceedings, public disclosure of the neighbors' legal tactics would be inappropriate. We are sure all Grove residents will agree and understand our quiet determination to see this through. The Grove First, a long-standing supporter of our neighborhood, is increasingly confident of the ultimate strength of the legal strategy. We look forward to a successful conclusion of the long campaign to keep big box operations out of Coconut Grove's residential neighborhoods—or remove them if they should open illegally. That conclusion likely lies at the end of this legal phase. You may see the doors open, but don't give up. We will continue to fight to save our quality of life in Coconut Grove!

Believe it or not (I'm sure many on this thread will not).... there are many Coconut Grove residents who see this store as a much-needed convenience. When is the opening date?
Well for you that need to destroy the quality of life in the Grove, destroy the image of our waterfront community, and clog our roads with several more thousand cars a day and can't go across the highway to Shell Lumber or 2,3 miles to the disaster at SW 8th St., then you deserve a Home Depot in your neighborhood with all that it brings. Can you say selfish?
If you need stuff drive 200 more yards to shell lumber, Its on 27th and us1 and has everything. plus their staff is AWESOME AND SOO HELPFUL. Dont forget the free popcorn. THEY HAVE THE BEST POPCORN.
Sorry fellow bloggers, but I too am waiting for HD to open. Everyone is spot on regarding Shel..won't dispute how great they are, but folks, they close at 5pm. Some people actually have jobs that don't allow for driving to a hardware store by 5pm on a weekday!
Home Depot's are for industrial sites near suburbs. Coconut Grove is special.
How would you like your family and your children to be living 500' from a store selling chemicals and concrete? How would you like to be at work thinking of your children dodging 18 wheelers while they walk to and from school?
How would you like to try to sell your home having a Home Depot next door?
im almost as depressed as i was when bush won the last election. this sucks big time.
How many Home Depots do we actually need? Really?
I will say that their parking lots are consistently packed though.
Anyone know why Lowe's hasn't come down more south? I think the nearest location of Lowe's is in Hialeah.
Michael,
I believe that Lowe's has intended to come farther south, however Home Depot's stated objective and actual practice is to keep Lowes' stores out of regions in which HD can establish a local monopoly on big box home improvement warehouse stores.
HD executes on this strategy by buying properties (such as the group of 15 former K-Mart stores of which the Coconut Grove site was one) that might be used by Lowes.
Although the HD strategy over-saturates a region with HD stores and canibalizes sales from its own stores, by keeping Lowes out of a local market (and thus reducing competition) HD nevertheless holds revenues and profits steady. (This strategy was explained to me by two regional managers of HD from elsewhere in the country. Mention of the strategy's details can also be found within HD's public statements to institutional investors and large investment banks.)
I hope that helps answer your question.
Get over it folks. Focus on cleaning up the rest of the Grove, the potential jewel of Miami. Put all your rage into something positive.
Go plant a tree...
We have our work cut out for us if Home Depot is allowed to open and run its operation the way it does on SW 8 St. We'd better have Code Enforcement on speed dial.
Have we already forgotten about the semi truck that struck a power line on Bird during the Arts Festival cutting off power for 2 hours and rerouting traffic down Shipping or the l8 wheeler that got stuck turning around at the exit of Kmart that went up on the sidewalk and blocked traffic in both directions for hours? You only thought you knew how bad traffic was - you ain't seen nothin' yet!
I live in the grove, and I am thrilled that the Home Depot opened. I don't understand the issue w/ the trucks? How did K-mart get their shipments....the toothfairy did not deliver it. I remember TRUCKS delivering products to K-mart way back then. Everyone just needs to get over it, move on to more important things.
