Old Grove
1914 -- and nothing has been upgraded. I told the realtor that I would prefer to live in The Barnacle if that was the case. She joked that the 1914 house was older, even though we both knew it wasn't. But honestly, if you want to go back in time and see what it was like back then, check it out at 3717 Matheson Avenue. I don't think she'll mind me writing about it since she wants to sell it.
She says David Fairchild lived there or was involved in some way. The grounds are magnificent, there is all sorts of trees and plants. Very nice. It reminded me of the Waltons house but I think their house was more modern than this. I wish I had taken my camera to show you the kitchen. It would be perfect for a set for a period movie.
The house across the street, also for sale, is from 1931. That's an interesting place to see, too. I really enjoyed going back in time. I felt like such an old-timer in the Grove of old.

...and some developer will come in, level it and build townhomes or a Hummer house with no setbacks.
La Brisa is for sale. Today they had an open house and I went to see it. It was built by some Pittsburgh steel tycoon in 1921 on almost 7 acres overlooking the bay-- except you can't really see the bay because of the mangroves. But the grounds are magnificent and the shell of the mansion is great - it is gutted fro renovation. It's on Main Hwy next to camp Biscayne. If you have the opportunity, take a look at what old money used to buy back in the day when James Deering was a nearby neighbor in Vizcaya.
Wouldn't it be great if the City had the money to buy it and turn it into a park.
Why do people see things ONLY in B&W? There can be a ton of different, tasteful, exciting, architecturally beautiful homes going in that space.
But a house with NO upgrades since before the depression can't be a place fit to live today!
Think: ratty electrical system, ratty plumbing, no central AC, really small spaces (a bedroom back then was, what? 9 x 6?), awful bathrooms...
Much better to raze it and build something completely new.
Excellent blog entry. There are some really great homes in the Grove.
You are right about publishing the information. Realtors always like extra exposure for their listings.
Hopefully, the next buyer will preserve the integrity of the house and do a nice renovation.
That house really is a gem.
You get so used to seeing ultra modern high-rise condos that it's really refreshing to see that simple sophistication of yesteryear.
