The Barnacle

The Barnacle is so nice, for those of you who have not visited, it is worth the trip.

On March 3, from 6 - 9:00 pm the Barnacle is having the Alhambra Orchestra perform at an event called "Barnacle Under Moonlight". The concert will be out back on the lawn great lawn. Bring a picnic dinner and blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the moonrise over Biscayne Bay as the orchestra performs. They aren't "going to the dogs" because no pets are allowed (unlike the restaurants) and no alcohol (unlike everywhere elses in the Grove).

Entrance fee is $5.00 for 10 years and older. Contact: (305) 442-6866 for more info.

I would say that the Barnacle brings you back in time, but ever since the City allowed those townhouses to be built next door, most of that old-time ambiance is gone. The City really should have purchased the land and made it a park when they could have. But as usual, the City never steps up and does the right thing.

This is how Vizcaya feels about the Mercy project. The whole quiet, old-time ambiance will be gone if those monstrosities are allowed to be built

I dunno. I'm kind of conflicted about banning all of this development. Don't get me wrong, I'm against the new Home Depot and things like that, but I don't think all that's old needs to be frozen into some kind of static state. Look at the IM PEI pyramid at the Louvre. The parisians hated it at first, now many love it. This shows a smart combo of the old and new. The brightly colored condos in the picture you posted actually don't look so bad and i really don't think a few highrises will ruin vizcaya. Maybe they will increase the traffic, but to completely change vizcaya, nah.

I live within 500 feet of the Mercy site. I have already made plans to check out property in North Carolina. If this thing passed, I am out the day of ground breaking.

I'm relatively new to town (just a few years) and have been to the Barnacle on several occasions on my own and with out of town guests. I have to say that the presence of the adjacent condos is palpable. You feel very walled in as you walk toward the water. Maybe the picture doesn't convey it well, but imo, the condos detract from the experience.

I'm not against development, per se, but we are not talking about an IM Pei styled building being next to the Vizcaya. We are talking about high rise buildings that already pepper the landscape elsewhere.

Enough already.

i agree w sotto. the barnacle is lovely, and i recently saw it for the first time wven though i live here now and have visited for 25 years. the townhouses do wall things in. and a few more millionaires could have lived somewhere else and no one would have cared but them. now, a public spot is compromised. too bad. but the house and grounds are well kept and the facility appears to be smartly programmed.

The funny part about all these new highrises is that the people building them are complete morons. My friend is renting a penthouse unit at Brickell on the River and its an absolutely gorgeous unit. However, the morons who built the building didnt allow for any parking space, so I had to pay $5 just to visit my friend. Even worse is that very shortly that will increase to $10 before 6pm and $15 after 6pm. I swear that this is only capable of happening in Miami...
