Work goes on

Apparently the Building Department now tells us that there is a permit to put in 8 inch pipes in the parking lot for the fire system on the inside of the building at the Home Depot/K-mart site. This is totally contrary to what the Code Enforcement Dept. said on Saturday. There was not a permit posted inside the trailer then.

These photos were taken today of the work being done and the crew.

I don't know if they have guity consciences or what, but I was in my car when I took these pictures, I didn't even know I could be seen, but the workers started yelling at me and chasing me away and I was in the right-of-way lane in the parking lot, where people are legally allowed to drive from Bird Ave. across to Taco Bell and Milam's.

If you enlarge the photo above, you can see them yelling at me. They have the perfect temperament to work for Home Depot -- at Publix, shopping is a pleasure, with Home Depot it is to antagonize the buying public and neighbors. Even the work crews have that down to a science.

As a semi professional photographer, I have been yelled at and threatened many times. Some "legalese" to keep in mind:

1. If something is happening in public you have a right to take a picture of it. There is no "reasonable" expectation of privacy.

2. If someone has a reasonable expectation of privacy (say, sunning in their yard) you can't photograph it.

Otherwise, it's all fair game

3. No one --including the police-- can grab or confiscate your camera. This includes goons, bodyguards, police and irate workers. Grabbing your camera, depending on the cost, could be considered anything from theft to grand theft.

4. No one may assault you (not that police in Miami give a shit about the law, but no one can assault you)

5. You can use any pictures for news kinds of pictures (like these) but not for commercial purposes unless you have a consent. But you don't need a consent for news pictures. Blogs qualify as news.

(this has nothing to do with free speech, but rather with avoiding using a person's likeness for commercial gain)

So... shoot away!

Amen for Anon and the right to take photos. And who the hell is a City sewer pipe layer to say you "can't" take his picture. You sure can.

And, Code; what can you say unless we abolish it?

I hope when the Home Depot gets defeated that some nice sushi place goes in and takes over the renovations. And a nice gym would be attractive too.

Anyone think any of the five (5) Commissioners will vote for a big box ugly hazardous waste spewing neighborhood killing warehouse store to open in gentle little Coconut Grove?
