Arts festival poster unveiled

This is Coconut Grove Arts Festival poster for this year. It was unveiled last night at the Sonesta Hotel. Romero Britto is the artist. What do you think? I like the image a lot, I just don't see Coconut Grove here.

That's a very provincial comment. Be it as it may, the CGAF, fence or no fence, now trascends Coconut Grove. I think this poster is not that great, personally, but I don't see why the CGAF should be visually limited to ONLY Coconut Grove.

I don't know, I guess because for the past 44 years it always has represented the Grove.

All the local arts festivals seem to have posters that represent their environs. The new Miami Beach Festival of the Arts poster is all Miami Beach lifeguard stands.

I really like all of the previous CGAF posters. What happened to that "laid back" in the grove feel? Too much "bling" for me.

Romero Britto is so far removed from the Grove, and doesnt know what living here is all about, obviously. This image screams south beach. Where is there a beach in the Grove? I think someone was just all to happy that Romero was doing the poster that they looked beyond the image that is supposed to represent the grove. But maybe I am just being to critical. Its a poster.

I agree that the image itself lacks a "Grove feel", but I think the funky design, color scheme, patterns, etc. are very "Grove". Last year we had a black & white of a tiger lily... Is that really "Grove"?

I wouldnt say the CGAF "transends" the Grove either. Grapevine is right. Each section of Miami has their own little arts festival. I like the one in South Miami too. They always have some nice things and the posters are usually pretty cool. I can imagine this CGAF poster will not sell as well as past posters because its taste is kinda limiting.

Well I'm no art critic but I know what I like and this could be anybody's festival poster. There is absolutely nothing that says "Grove" here at all. If you look at past years posters they all relate to the event or to the Grove in some way. Not that it's bad, I just don't get it. The people running this Festival get freaker all the time. If the people who started the CGAF know what it's become I'm sure they are appalled.

The poster is alright, but like others have said, it's too "South Beach" and not enough 33133, if you know what I mean.

On a related note, I know that the St. Stephen's Art & Craft Show poster is going to be unveiled next Friday night (Jan 26th). I'm sure it'll be more "Grove" than this one...at least I hope so.

Feel as you may feel about both shows, I think it's great that Coconut Grove hosts as much art as it does.

Apologies for not including the location of the St. Stephen's poster unveiling.

It will be held at Coconut Grove Gallery & Interiors. RSVP's are requested: info@artshowss.com.

Not enough Grove. Too much Britto. --L

It's not Grove like, and I'm surprised the art festival would ask somebody so commercialized to be the poster artist of the year. This guy's stuff is too formula like and I doubt his art will be worth much to future generations (although not as bad as Thomas Kincaid's junk, wait .... I I didn't just give them an idea for next year did I?).

There was a shoe store on S. Dixie at N. Kendall for years with a Britto mural on the exterior wall facing Dixie. It must have been 10 ft by 10 ft. A bulldozer took the mural down along with the building about 2 years ago. Not a peep was heard from anybody about the destruction of this "art". I expect the fate of any of these posters sold this year will be similar.

Most interesting comments. Has anyone realized that the Miami Beach poster was done by one of our own.
Now thats painting plus representing the area it was meant for. As for Britto seen one seen them all.
Lets have a look at that one and bring on St. Stephens as well.

Don't like it all. Agree it is too commercial and what's with that pointed Madonna-like bathing suit top. Didn't like last year's either. How about something that reflects our trees, our sailing community, wouldn't hang it in my home!

Thanks for mentioning me in passing. I, AnnaMaria
Windisch Hunt, living in Coconut Grove with artist/husband Fred Hunt created the 2007 "Festival of the
Arts" poster via open call to artists. Please visit the web site we share to see the Miami Beach poster.
http://web.mac.com/fredhuntart
and while there, have a look at the other work created and inspired in Coconut Grove. We still have artists who can and would be delighted to do the Grove poster other than us. ps. Fred participated in the first few CGAfestival before it was organized, and systematically excluded Grove artists.

I think it's rather nice. Sort of 1960-70ish. People in the the Grove still wear bathing suits, do they not? Or maybe they do not.

AnnaMaria and Fred are two REAL Grove artists. If you haven't met them, you should. They love art and they love Coconut Grove. Just like the other pioneer artists like Leonard King, Jack Amoroso, Gene Massin, and my dad.

The Britto poster is OK, but he is a factory not an artist. I think that the entries for the official poster should be restricted to students from Coconut Grove Elementary School.

As a former off and on Grovite going way back, I think the Britto poster rather accurately reflects the stepped up gaudy piecemeal development of the Grove since the 1970s, the bikini babe being the symbolic centerpiece of how advertisers entice buyers to the area as a virtual fountain of youth. Under the developers' scalpel your once quiet uncluttered village under a tropicana canopy will soon be given up to a new Rio de Janeiro. As well, they're ruining this part of God's country. This halfback snowbird is heading home in my golden years, hoping they don't follow!

Everything that was said about Britto here was said earlier by others about Andy Warhole. Will he be appreciated in the future nobody knows and neither do I. He style is appealing to some and rejected by others. At least one can recognize it and it till not put one to sleep. All the comments about trees etc. can be said about a lot of festivals not only in the USA but also in the world. Personally I do not think it is the best Britto work but to say that it is not art is a dogmatic in itself. Some folks only want to see one kind of art just like other folks want to see only one kind of religion.

Really appreciate Brito. This does not do it for the CGAS. Lisa Remny's poster's were wonderful.
