Let there be light

There is a very good article in today's Herald about taking the Grove's streets back from criminals after the last two very publicized events -- the tourist killing and the attack of the old lady in her own home.

I know the niece of the old lady. I almost bought a very nice, big large house on Lincoln, but decided against it after seeing the creeps who run around the neighborhood.

Ironically, I thought I was safe in my condo -- in our fancy neighborhood on the water -- but during Tropical Storm Ernesto, my next door neighbors' condo was ransacked and another neighbor says a beebee or bullet went through her window.

Click here for the Herald story about taking the streets back.

One big step is simply lighting up the place. I recommend that everyone who reads this add a light or two to their condo, house, boat, whatever. . . . Flood lights -- facing the dwelling or street or wherever. Let there be light! As the article says, cockroaches don't like light. Neither do criminals.

I also ask that you not purchase the lights at Home Depot, but get them at Shell Lumber, Target, K-mart, etc. Anywhere other than Home Depot. No need to give the enemy business.

I have lived on Lincoln for 9 years, and have noticed that (a) there are maybe just one or two "very nice, big larges houses" on our street; and (b) even fewer creeps, unless you mean me, in which case I'd have to agree. Hate the creeps. Love the neighborhood.

There is no substitute for being well-armed.

I meant the creep who attacked the old lady, not the actual neighbors who live on the street. I love all the Grove neighbors.

I like that big modern Robin Parker house with the underground parking.

That's an interesting house, although it looks like the pool has been neglected. He has a propane generator but it makes an awful screeching noise when it kicks in.

Excellent suggestion, that you make your purchases at Shell Lumber. The proprietor, Paul, is a really nice guy and he runs a great business.

I have one small problem with the article. I don't understand the "reverse sting" theory. How will that cut down on crime? The crime that I worry about in the Grove is getting robbed and/or getting my house broken into. The people in the expensive cars buying drugs do not rob my house. The drug dealers do not rob my house. In fact, they are stimulating the economy. It is the poor drug addict that robs my house, and that person already knows who the drug dealers are and who the cops are.
The drug problem will never disappear until the addition problem is solved.

Another really important tip would be to have neighbors knowing neighbors. People don't know their neigbors anymore and that is a huge part of the problem. You aren't going to look out for the guy you don't even know and he sure isn't going to look out for you and yours. There is a disconnection. The only time I see this truly change is after a Hurricane when the power goes out. Then all the little hermit crabs (us) come out of their shells (homes) and take an interest in each other. If you know all your neigbors you'll know who is out of place when they come slinking down the street.

Everytime I go running and the sun goes down before I get home, I always wonder why my "elite" neighborhood doesn't invest in streetlights.
