A piece of Grove history just keeps going on

Miami Racked did a nice little feature on Maya Hatcha, one of the oldest, if not the oldest businesses in Coconut Grove. In 2008, we did a story on their 40 year anniversary called Fierce at 40. Now it's almost 50 years - same location all these years.

Here's the Miami Racked feature called, A Little Piece of 1969.

A question begs answering! If so many others have come and gone, why has this store survived? I've always enjoys shops like this. However, how does an establishment, with few high ticket items, and even allowing for a large number of dedicated regulars and the tourist trade, how does this one afford their rent? From hundreds of comments on the Grape, all rents are said to be absurd and many comments imply the property owners would prefer to stay empty, rather than allow for reduced rents. Does this establishment own their space? Jobie Steppe
