Commissioner's office sponsoring Toiletry Drive

County Commissioner Xavier Suarez's office is sponsoring a Toiletry Drive.

"During the 2018-2019 school year, there were 182 students experiencing homelessness in District 7. Since the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, there have been 77 students identified as experiencing homelessness in District 7. Almost half of the students are from Coconut Grove," says Shanise Watson, Aide to Commissioner Suarez.

"This is quite concerning to the Commissioner and so our office reached out to Debra Steiger, Director of Community Outreach, at Project Upstart to see how we could make a positive impact on the students," Shanise said.

Project Upstart identifies and offers resources and support services to homeless students throughout the Miami Dade Public School system. Ms. Steiger expressed that the items most often requested by the students are toiletry items.

The drive will run through December 18. They have partnered with Project Upstart, the Thelma Gibson Health Initiative and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart to collect donations for the following items:

Dental Products (e.g. toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash)
Hair Products (e.g. shampoo, conditioner, brushes, combs, hair accessories)
Hygiene Products (e.g. feminine, liquid soap, anti-bacterial gel, deodorant, bars of soap, body wash, body lotion) - no razors please

The drop off is Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm at:
District 7 Coconut Grove Office
Frankie Rolle Center
3750 S. Dixie Highway
