Should a satellite school be built at The Kampong?
FIU has been trying to win support of the neighbors but neighbors are not having it. The Village Council? Who knows, they seem to be in favor of development, they are in favor of the County's playhouse plans, they could be in favor of the FIU's plans for the Kampong.
FIU is trying to win approval from several boards including the Village Council. Neighbors are being asked to come to the meeting in July to "set the Village Council straight," as one neighbor said it.
Day and night classes eventually planned by FIU, in this quiet south Grove neighborhood, will disrupt the area. The structure will be a total of almost 19,000 square feet added to this precious green space. The structure will be taller than most trees on the property and clearly be seen from Douglas Road. And that area is congested already.
That green area will be a school building if approved, with a large lit parking lot, where the green fields are now.
A "College/University" is strictly prohibited as part of the Miami21 planning code, so the whole issue could be moot. The land where the campus will go is zoned as “T3-R/NCD 3 Residential/ Suburban” single-family home district.
The Village Council meeting is Monday, June 10 at 6:30 pm, at City Hall, 3500 Pan American Drive. The meeting is open to everyone.

The Kampong should be preserve as is now. More traffic and construction on such a sensitive area doesn't make sense. Fabian Garcia Diaz
Is this a joke! Seriously!! Yes that area of town is already congested with traffic and build a school at the Kampong!! The former home of David Fairchild. What the hell, why doesn’t FIU see if they can start building at Fairchild Tropical Gardens!! They have 83 acres of land!!
So Grove residents allow Ransom to increase its enrollment by 10% via the purchase of La Brisa, changing a single family zone to allow for this and support a 700 seat theatre in the heart of the Grove......complaining now of congestion!
If the zoning is for residential only and College/University is forbidden, it should not be changed and the press should be know.
This area is already slam with traffic in the morning/afternoon, so why here? The Kampong should remain a park and not be ruined by a big school building. Enough!
