Hundreds come out for Grove tree lighting

It felt like old times at Saturday night's tree lighting party. Hundreds of people were out, Fuller Street was closed to traffic, where booths and games were set up for kids and families and a couple of galleries were crowded all night. The Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery had the premier of Ron Magill's African photography and pop art filled the Grove Fine Art Gallery on Main Highway, which was right next to the tree lighting on Florentine Plaza. We'll post photos from the galleries tomorrow.

Lots of friends were out, I saw people I hadn't seen for months. It was a lot of fun. I saw bar and restaurant owners milling around, enjoying the fun, rather than be at their restaurants, which were quite full. Everyone seemed to be doing great business on Saturday.

District Commission Ken Russell did the count down for the tree lighting and at 8 pm, the tree was lit for the season. The BID and CocoWalk sponsored the tree lighting ceremony.

How nice that so many people showed up. I think the BID should find a way to make that area of Main Highway a pedestrian street. They've done that all over small towns in Europe and it works great. They could close off Main Street at Green Street, all the way to Virginia Street and Grand Avenue from Fuller to Virginia Street. Mc Farlane to the Sonesta Hotel. We could have cafes, etc. all around.
