City Commission approves return of scooters

Love them or hate them, the rental scooters will be on the Grove streets again, soon.

A pilot program will allow the scooters to be used in District 2 neighborhoods like the Grove and Brickell. The City Commission approved a pilot program last week by a vote of 3-2.

Electric scooters started popping up around the village in June. Those who rode them loved them, those who didn't understand them, hated them. They eventually were carted off because there was no city ordinance allowing them to operate, they were not licensed.

I am a supporter. I think they are efficient, alleviate the parking problems and add a lot of energy to the neighborhood. People used them to make quick runs to pick up lunch and just to relieve stress during the day. I've even seen the ubiquitous construction workers using them to get around town.

Now under legislation drafted by district Commissioner Ken Russell, any scooter company can pay a fee and apply for a license. They will also be regulated now and the quantity could be controlled. In the past, they were just popping up on every corner
Also regular reports will be filed on their status.

One major complaint is that people just drop off the scooters anywhere when they are done with them. The Grove is an obstacle course these days anyway, so I'm guessing that is not the biggest issue currently.

These were a disaster in Santa Monica. Surely if everyone was responsible but that does not happen. What until someone gets hit hard by these or a seriously accident..... Little donor mobiles

people don't understand? Yes they do - all over the country. A good idea gone wrong. Dockless scooters (and bikes)and disliked in every city. The concept of just dropping in off ANYWHERE you feel like is absurd. Perhase you don't realize that besides the safety problems for rider and pedestrians, just think of it as a large piece of litter that people drop wherever they want.Dockless is not working in any city in the US. PS. check out how well it is "working" in China. I am waiting for the "I old you so" moment when you complain about too many in front of your building, or there being too many just blocking businesses, sidewalks, etc. People understand, what don't you understand?
