Rebuilding Day is Saturday

Coconut Grove Rebuilding Day is Saturday, June 2 from 7 am to 1 pm. Join Commissioner Ken Russell and the District 2 office to help neighbors in Village West.

Thanks to $300,000 in CDBG funding designated by Commissioner Ken Russell and over $200,000 donated by The Home Depot Foundation, Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade will make critical repairs to homes in the historic West Coconut Grove neighborhood. This effort demonstrates the positive effects of home and neighborhood revitalization on the health of homeowners, families, and the local community and preserves affordable homeownership in a community experiencing rapid gentrification.

Over 150 volunteers will make repairs to the homes of low-income homeowners in West Coconut Grove to bring immediate, large-scale impact to this historic community in a single day. Common repairs include accessible bathroom modifications, kitchen renovations, roof replacements, plumbing and electrical, energy efficiency upgrades, exterior painting and landscaping, and so much more.

Protecting and rehabilitating the West Grove community has been a priority for Commissioner Ken Russell from the beginning of his tenure as District 2 Commissioner. This neighborhood is among the oldest communities in the City of Miami, one threatened by gentrification and development. Coconut Grove Rebuilding Day is a step toward the visioning of building a West Grove that is strong, vital and includes the residents who have lived here historically, and to this day.

In 2017, Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade completed 57 owner occupied rebuilds, 4 small businesses, and 3 community spaces. RTMD’s average client is 72 years old, has a combined household income of $21,131, and has lived in their home for 25+ years.

Meet at St. Matthew CMB Church, 3616 Day Avenue to join in.

Rebuilding Togther started in 1973 in Midland, Texas, where neighbors realized homes in their community had fallen into disrepair and neighbors could not afford to fix them. The group volunteered their time and skills and realized the potential of the group helping their neighbors.

News spread and the national office opened in 1988. And today, nearly 100,000 volunteers have completed about 10,000 rebuild projects nationwide each year.
