Has the County updated their Playhouse plan?

Rendering of the new playhouse
The Real Deal talks about a new plan by the County regarding the Coconut Grove Playhouse, but it sounds a lot like the old plan. All six members of the Miami’s Urban Development Review Board approved the plan on Wednesday this week.

They say that the plan now includes a fully restored auditorium building.

To be honest, I don't know what is going on with the playhouse, my end objective is to keep major development from that area.

One person tells me that if the county plan goes through, this will keep major development away, another tells me the opposite and that the Mike Eidson plan will keep development away.

Developers own a lot of the land up and down Charles Avenue, which is behind the playhouse.

If you don't keep your history near your heart you will not have a worthy future. Stop it with greed.

Does the Historic Preservation Designation have any say in what happens? I understand that the Eidson group was not present at the Urban Development meeting the other night- and that everyone congratulated the County and Arquitectonica- who by the way owns the 5 story, no garage office building going up next door. I have heard that the Playhouse garage is back to 5 stories. Who has final say? This is classic Miami runaround.

I really don't see the problem with developing Charles Avenue. That street is an absolute dump and when I lived just to the south of it on main I would sometimes use Charles to get home. Drug deals and other shady behaviors are common there. Smoke em out. You can't shut the door behind you.

The Miami-Dade County plan WILL NOT save the Playhouse. The plan calls for only saving the front facade where the offices and apartments were located. The entire building was designated historical in 2005, and the County is trying to misconstrue the designation report to exclude 85% of the building so they can demolish it. Michael Spring and Miami-Dade County CANNOT be trusted to preserve the Coconut Grove Playhouse.
